In the midst of this uproar — Mr. Ra: monn, of the Courier, advansed to the vioi nly of the Chair, and addressed the assembly. He spoke of the rights, duties, and sins of omission and commission of the newspaper press—pointed out the true way to reform its abuses—and after dwelling com- placently on theshsre which it had taken in the ele- vation of 21 Taylor, concluded amid general ap- plause by giving as atoast— “ Phe dead principles of the whig patty—they may have sunk, but so the day-starin the bed of the cean, only to replenish its fires; and, with renewed glory, to flame in the forehead of the morning sky.” "Good for Raymond!” exclaimed a dry goods clerk from the regions of Cedarand Pearl. “That’s from Moore’s Melodies?” insinuated a tallow-faced youngster who sat near the reporter “It's of mo consequence!!’ chimed in another. Mr. Gainnect responded. His voice had failed him, but mot the spirit that animated the great Taylor party. (Cheers) He came there not to claim any peouliar ition there or elsewhere, but simply to oongratulate Webster men, Scott men, and Clay men, and Taylor men on their victory. (Cheers) He came in this mighty victory. They might talk of whi y bad done, but it was the Union that had done it. The East had nobly done her duty New York had done her duty. It had reverberated from Erie to the oc The South had also acted nobly. He wished he could go on. but, as Old Virginia never tired, he would introduce his friend, Mr. Prestoa, who ‘would shew them what the South had done. Mr. Paryston accordingly presented himself, and ived with moderate applause. He spoke in atthe end of the table. He dwelt with pa- nderness on the demise of Henry Clay; but he consoled himself with the reflection, that, “being dead, he yet speaketh.” His spirit still animated the American people. “Old Grimes is dead, that good old soul, ‘We ne’er shall see him more. ‘J ured to wear an old brown coat, All buttoned down before!” — sung outa feilow atthe end of the room, ina very doleful voice, “ Pat him out!’ “outwith the d—d Jocofoeo !’? was shouted by several. and a general rush was made towards the door of the ante-room. Geo. Eyans, of Maine, which was received with loud cheer: Mr. Draren then took the chair, and the calls for Mi that gentleman rove and addiessed the company. He said that the meeting had been addressed eloquently by gentlemen of New Yok. There was a reaction in the stock market to-day; and nearly every fancyin the list fell off a fraction. It wes our impression that the improvement of last week could not be sustained, as there was no basis for it, and the right kind of operators were not in the market. At the first board, Harlem declined 4 per cent; Canton Company, ¥; Farmers’ Loan. %; Nor- wich and Worcester, 1; Erie Railroad, {; Reading Ohio 6's advanced %. The demand for exchange for remittance by the packet leaving this port to-morrow for Liverpool, has, as yet, not beem very active. The best bills on Lon- don we quote at 88% per cent premium. On Paris, Sf. 25 a Sf, 224; Amsterdam, 40 a 40%; Hamburg, 35h 85534; Bremen, 7834 a 79. ‘The Boston money market is reprosonted as having materially improved during the past week, and the outdoor rates are daily lessening. The banks were discounting more freely, and there was more activity in business, The amount of tolls collected at Oswego from the resumptien of navigation to the 15th of November, this year, was $208,C00 against $222,233 for the cor- responding period, last year, showing a decrease of $14,233, ‘The improvement reported by recent advices, in the railway speculations in Great Britain, is nothing more | or less than a reaction after long period of depression, | and is the result more of the movements of the man: gers of certain leading lines, than of any real or per- manent improvement in the value of the property re- presented. So far as we can see,the only foundation for the changes is the fact, that one of the largest com: | panfes madea more favorable report of its condition | than was anticipated, and the impression becoming | general that the other lines would make exhibits equally favorable, an advance in prices was realized It is our opinion, that another reaction is not far dis- tant, but that reaction will depress prices full as much | as the one just experienced has inflated them. The facts is, the railway business in England is overdone; more than one-half of the lines never can be made to pay, and the most productive will be much less profit- able than they have been. Returns recently received show a steady falling off in the weekly receipts, in tho face ot movements in merchandise, but little less limit. ed than those of last year. Ifthis is the case now, what may be expected whon all the contemplated lines aro completed, and the amount of capital invested in these works is double what it is at present? ‘This is not a diffloult question to answer. According to tables publicbed in England, upon the best authority, it ap- pears that railway bills have been granted by Patlia- ment, authorizing an expenditure of £326,643,217. Of this amount, £105.317,100 had been called in up tothe end of September, leaving liabilities still resting upon the public to the amount of £131,326,111. A moderate depreciation in such an immense amount of property, involves the ruin of thousands ; but when a deprecia- tion of fifty per cent takes place, the most fearful dis- asters must be experienced. It is estimated that these Lines, vpon which nearly two hundred milltons ot dred and thirty-one millions still due, the property re; Presented is not valued at wore than one half the amount;jend the lines upon which large payments are Tequired, monthly, aie weekly falling off in their re- ceipts, as will be seen by the annexed table Dublinand Drogheda . . 806 Dublin end Kingstown..... . The amount of traflic for one week on 4,110 miles of railway this year, was £225,801, of which £119,402 wate | for the conveyance ot passengers only, £48 450 for ust*portation of goods, and the remainder, £5 pastengers and goous together. Last year, the amount of traffic on 3,296 miles, was £214 273, being but £11,528 less than for the same week this year on $14 miles of road less than were in operation last year, This shows an average earning per mile, in 1847, of £65, and in 1848, of £65. Thisisa | f° cear illus’ ration of the steady decline in the earnings | ke of railrcads in England, and nothing can arrest it.— The increase of roads is likely to be much more rapid than the increase ot travel or freight; and the compe- tition which must arice, w.!!, sooner or later, bankrupt many companies which are no; moderately produc- tive.
