TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE, ‘ rns John A. Collier vs. Thuriow Weed, &c. Aunasy Nov. 20-P M, John A. Collier's letter, addressed to the Evening Journal, in reference to the whig anti Taylor meting held here a few weeks previous to the election, and ia answer to various charges made by Weed, w* pad lished this afternoon. Mr. Collier denies that he bad any thing to do with the letter published in tae Ex- press—ealls Tkuriow “the Autocrat of the Journa ,” and bandies him very roughly. ‘Weed does not sustain his obarges against oilier ; but tries to prove, by letters from Wm. Parinelee and others, that Mr. Collier did not take prominence in the whig meeting alluded to ; and that it was owing to the efforts of others, rather than to the influence of Col- Mer, that Gen. Taylor was not denounced ‘The quarrels of these whig politicians division of the “ spoils’ Hl about the are increastog in interest. Taylor's majority will be about 3,000, ALABAMA. 4 There can be but litite doubt of the vote of this State having been given te Cass and Butler, by a majority not exceeding one thousand. Monday, Nov. 2U—6 P.M, There was s general improvement in for stooks to-day, the result partially of ofthe news from Eurcpe. Prices were the close of Jast week than they had been for some time previously, and the adviees from the other side hi i given the market an additfonal impetus, At the drst | board, to-day, Treasury notes went up 3s per cent; U. S . 6a, 1868, 34; Obfo 62,4; New York and New Haven Railroad ; Canton Co. X; Norwich and Worcester | %; Farmers’ Loan, X: Harlem, %; and Erie Railroad, | new, 1. The sales of Harlem were iarge, at the im- | ; provement. At the second board, Harlem fell off %; Norwich and Worcester ; Erie Railroad and others closing at prices current in the morning The rhipments of specie by the steamship Washing. ton were as follows:—To Havre, 38,969 five franc pieces; 25000 American belf dollars, and 39,170 Mexican dollars; te Bremen, 7 467 Mexican dollars, The annexed bids wore received for the five hundred thousand dollars of Erie Railroad eeven per cent mort- gage bonds: — New Yorx anp Ersx Rau. Roan Bonva, AP SBH6, U0 ‘The successful bidd of the $500.000 were 89a 88 02 inelosive, about the current prices for those now in the market. | The commercial accounts from Europe, by the Aca- | dia, do not amount to much, but they are rather favora- | ble than otherwise. The advance in cotton looks well; but we are afraid it cannot besustained The demand for manufactured goods from the United States, and from all other parts of the world, is likely to be mere limited for several months than it has been, and the manufacturers will be compelled to contract their ope- ration even below the reduced point reached since the revulsion commenced; and in the face of this, it is hardly poseible for the raw material to improve much im prices, or even for current rates to be sustained. The limited wants of the manufacturers cannot main- tain prices, when the stocks on hand are growing by the large receipts from the United Staces, and the prospect for a large yield from the crop now being picked is so good as reports from all parts of the coun- try exhibit. The absence of speculators from the Liverpool market is another evidence of the weak- ness of the market, and the artificial stimulus given to prices. We do not look for any permanent or | important improvement in quotations for co:ton | in Liverpool until speculation becomes active. The manufacturers are very seldom speculators; | it is only when largely stocked that they have any disposition to put up the market. As general, | we might almost say a universal thing, manufacturers | are opposed to high prices for the raw material, and ia the abscence of speculators, they will use every effort to depress the m: t. We alluded, a few days sins, to the speculations of British manufacturers in our routhern markets, where they were purchasing for their own consumption, at prices a fraction above those current in New York, We can form from this @ pretty good evidence of what a position the market would be in, if these partivs had absolute control over it. It is the specuiator, atter all, that gives activity to operations, an impetus to prices, and the producer, in a measure, depends upon that clase for remuneration The position of the two claeves of operators in Liverpool is by no means favorable for any permanent improvement fa prices: ond although an advance may from time to time be quoted, unless the basis ia sound, it cannot be sustain: ad. The improvement reported by this arrival, has only equalized prices between Liverpool and our prin- cipal +hipping points; but the effest hore, probably, will be to make the difference greater than it war before, and place us further in advance, The Earopean advices relative to che crops and the | cal | fowr hundred head left over, breadstuifé on this side of the Atlantic, The weather in Great Britaty, for some days previous to the depar- ture of the steamez, bad not been propitious, either for thore preparations necessary for the sowing of the fall crops, or for the preservation of grain remaining in stack. This is indicative of a shorter supply of breadstuffs in the morkets Juterin the season, as the time and attention of the farmers will be directed to getting in their new crops and thresbing out their old. A ty poery.improvement In prices is antict- pated froa these causes, but we perceive that none of the British suthorities look for a permanent or im. | portant advance, The near approach of the period, (February 1. 1849). at which the existing corn laws ave to termivate, and the trade in corn to be compara tively free, will, no doubt, have an inflasnce upon producers and speculators, and induce them to pat their supplies upon the market as early as possible. We bave nothing more definite by this arrival relative to the domestic supply of grain or potatoes, bat the steadiness of prices and the absence of all spe- culation is pretty good evidence that it is the prevailing opinion that, with moderate importations, it will be equal to the demand for consumption, | » Large shipments of both flour and Indian corn have been recently made from this and other ports of this country, to Great Britain and Ireland, We no- tice that the shipments have been more distributed than usual, and bear the appearance of being made upon foreign account, rather than on account ofapeo- vlators on this side of the Atlantic. Heretofore, the bulk of the importation of breadstuffs, from this country into Great Britain, has been into Liverpool, and distributed from that point to all others—similar tothe movements in cottoa—but now it is more dirsct intothe markets where they are required for con- sumption, Itis very probable that sbipments from | this country to Great Britain will gontinue for some time, to some extent. even in the face of depreciating prices, and be placed in bend, #0 asto take advantage of tne changes about being madein the corn laws, | In the event. however, of any important advance io our own markets, shipments could not be made, unless | the prospect of @ corresponding improvement on the | other side was much more favorable than represented | by recent advices, We look for a moderate, but healthy and remunerative trade in breadstuffs, be- tween thetwo countries throughout the season, but | nothing approaching the speculative operations of 1846 and 1847. The London money market is represented as hav- ing undergone a material improvement, the result of which was an advance in consols. A reduction iu the rate of interest on certain descriptions of bills was i without doubt the cause, rather than the effect of the change. A movement of this kind was calculated to engender confidence, an element of so much import. ance in financial affairs that its extension should by | fostered and encouraged in every way. It has for such a length of time been at such a low ebb, that there is very little probability of its recovering a0 ra- pidly as to produce any speculative movement in any great stapler, but on the contrary the experience of the past has been too dearly purchased, and the disasters realized are yet of such recent occurrence that a great deal of caution and prodence will for sone time be exercieed im all commercial operations. As an evidence of this, it is only necessary to point to the great abundance and cheapness of money in Englands and the little dieposition exhibited to engage in any- thing but the most legitimate operations, und in those on)y toa moderateextent We trust nothing will trans- pire for a long time to disturb or derange the existing order of things, and that a gradual and steady recove- ry will take place, instead of jumping at once into movements which must, sooner or later, terminate in disasters equally as extensive as those recently realized, Such @ revulsion as has passed over thy commercial world—such a complete prostration of all credit syetems—such a thorough revolution in every syste which has for ges regulated the finances and commerce of all nations, and in all the political affairs of Europe—cannot be so easily obliterated)and the effects so easily removed. It will take years to bring. | famil things beck to # prosperous condition, and many re. lapses witl no doubt be experienced in the course of recovery All proper and legitimate means should be employed to bring the body financial and commurotei back again to a sound and healthy state; but any at- tempt to force it by artiicial means may, for a time, be ratisfactory, but it will assuredly be followed by relapse, which will be attended with most aiarming re- sults, For this reason we look upon all these move ments, calculated to give an impetus to speculation, with fear and trembling, and warn the public against them.
