The canal agrees, in future, to charge 75 cents toll per ton, and the railroad $1 65, instead of $1 25, a9 at present. ‘The statement & de that one-third of the tonnage is guaranteed to the canal, is not correct, Each line will enjoy the benefit of its own receipts. It is stated that the Schuyikill Navigation Company have itin contemplation to make a transfer of its whole property, including the cars and boats, to trus- tees, ‘The proposition Sf the Fitchburgh Railroad direo- tors toguaranty the bonds of the Vermont and Massa- -churetts road, meets with little favor from the stock. holders of the former. Even if the measure be legal; which many doubt, it !s thought to be imprudent, im- politic, and ealculated to weaken public confidence in ement of these lucrative investments. In the opinion of many, railroad charters were not grant- ed by the legislature to enable one corporation to be- ocme endorser for another. The Boston money market is represented as being about one quarter per cent easier than it was a week since. The banks were more liberal in their discounts, and the supply of prime paper was diminishing. Within the past year, its specie has pren reduced from $257,330 to $87,128, while its circulation has fallen from $1,208 859 to $785,622. ‘This isa contraction; but the reduction in specie progrorses eo much more repidly than the reduc. tion in the circulation, that if it should continue at the same rate much longer, there would be a large amount of paper afloat, without any specie in ‘the vaults of the bank, The condition of this institution calls for some prompt action to place it beyond all dan- ger. Politrcians— Speculations as to the Vote of Mary- land--Fulton’s Steam Pump—The Viennoise— Virguma Free Soil Ticket, &c. Although there 1s none of that fiery excitement prevalent among the poli icians of our city that distinguished the campaiga of 1844, still the party feeling seems to be as deep and strong now as it was then. The democracy are confi. dent of carrying the city by a majority of at least 1,200 for Cass, whilst the whigs express the hope and belief that it will not exceed 400. In order for Gen. Cass to carry the State a majority of 1,200 1m Baltimore city will be requisite, and of about 1,000 in the county. To consummate this, the de- mocracy gre making great exertions, and the whigs are making equal exertions to prevent it. Both parties clam: large gains in the eastern and western counties, but the chances of carrying the | State are ten to one in tavor of Gen. Taylor. The Viennoise Danseuses appeared last night at the Front street theatre, to the most immense au- | dience I eversaw within the walls of a theatre; the stay | receipts having, { learn, fallen little short of $1,700. | There is no theatre in the country more suitable tor a fine display ot these danseuses than the immense stage of the Front, and the immense auditory it holds prevems the necessity of raising prices. Mad. Anna Bishop and M eady are announced to appear at this house. . The Ravels still draw fine houses at the Hol- nae street theatre. The Mechanies’ Fair opens in this city to-day, and will tar exceed that of the Franklin Inatitute, By the way, the award of the New York Fair of only a silver medal to the Baltimore Fulton steam pomp, has lowered its management to the lowest possible estimation in the eyes of Baltimore me- chames. Jt was admitted by all who examined his and Worthington’s pump, that worked side and side, that Fulton’s two horse pump threw more water than Worthington’s ten horse pump. Sull, these savans award a gold medal to Wor- thington, and a silver one to Falton. Cloroform and Hydrophobia—Scarcity of Funds m Philaddphia County—Politics. Cloroform has been edministered in a case of hydrophobia, at mden, New Jersey, by Dr. Jackson, of this city, with such eminent success | thathopes are entertained that the valuable life placed in peril by this terrible aliiection, will be preserved. The suflereris Mrs. Burroughs, the wife of Edwaid Burroughs, of Camden, and the, her of Francis Cooper, the tobacconist, of this city. She was bittea on the hand by a dog in | July last, while protecting one of her children j from its attack; but the animal exhibiting no | signs of madness, she permitted the wound to heal up. Lately, she has suffered mach froma natutul secaetiee in her arm ; but within ten days | past, the hand where the bite had been, began to swell, and finally festered. Tae symptoms ot hydrophobia came on gradualiy, until Sunday, when she had innumerable spasms, barked like a dog, tore the pillow case with her hands, and bit at everything within her reach. ‘The spasms were overcome by the ap- | plication of chloreform, and yesterday she was comparatively free from them. The sore on her hand was also cut away, and she 1s eensibly re- lieved by the discharges from it. To-day she is so much better that she has been able to swallow nearly a quart, of milk without a recurrence of the spasms. The Teas of the great county of Philadel- phia 1s entitely bare of funds, and the school teachers, who have been waiting since the first of October for their quarter’s ealary, are given to un- derstand that they will probably have to wait till January. a Dr. Elder, the editor of the free-soil “paper re= cently started here, left the city this morning, for Tioga, to ascertain whether the rumor that Mr. Wilmot has deserted the cause be true or not. Canaccas, Sept. 17, 1848, The democratic republican squadron of this re- publie, generally known as the squadron of Paez, about the 20th ult., after laying a few days at Ca- rupano, frightening the people and causing the troops to be sent to that place rom all parte of the province of Cumana, it proceeded to Riocaribes, twelve miles to windward of Carupano, and cap- tured that place, where it lay woul the 30th; taking on board Cammandante Pana, with 250 men, who had several battles with the troops of Monagas, but, for want of arms and munitions otf war, ha retreated to the woods, and thus held out four | months. : With this additional force on board the republi- can squadron, it proceeded to Juan Griego, a port on the north side of the island of Marganta, and remained at anchor there trom the Istto the 5th inst., consisting of one bark and nine schooners, with some launches, when it made sail for the Dutch island of Curacoa, one day’s sail from Ma- racaibo, where General Paez had gone from St. Thomas. _ The squadron of Monagas, consisting of five brigs and tive schooners, arrived at the island of Margarita the day after the republican squadron had lef ; so they did not come in con- tact as was anticipated. “The squadron of Paez hes on board wbout 1,200 men, ineluding soldiers ; | their object is not known; but, as the castle of | San Carlos, which commands the entrance to Ma- racaibo, and the lake of Maracaibo being also in possession of the democratic republican flotella of | 16 gun-bocts, itis probable the intention to take Maracaibo and to hold that province, and there tom an army for other operations against the libe erals, as they style themselves. While the squadron of Paez lay at Carupano, General Carabava, a liberal, commanding the | troops at Comana, set out for Carapano, but was assassinated on the road. the instance of Ren- con, Otero Guerra, and Hernandez. Rendonis a senator in Cop Otero Guerra wag a repre- sentative in the ongress, and Hernandez, the acting governor 0 Cumana. This trio of ultra liberals govern the provinee of Cumana; or, at least, Rendon, who styles himself the O’Connell | of Venezuela, nogninates every officer, from the governor down to the alguazel, and the entire arly of liberals give their votes accordingly. Tis Senor Rendon is an aspirant for the Vice Presidency, and at the Angust election Rendon tormed a ticket for the electors of the province, cousisung of six persons, placing his own name at the head of the list, and Ocero Guerra next General Carabana was opposed to this manner of proceeding, wnd ne formed a new list of electors, placing the judge of first mstance at the head of the hict, &e. ; and, for daring to oppose the great Daniel of Cumana, he lost his life, leaving a wie dow and large family to mourn his untimely end, \ ve a specimen of liberalism in Vene+ You thus , the Baltimore Sun of the Ulta Avgost, a letter, which bears date the 4th July, from Maiquetiar, a village one mile from Laguay ra. ‘This letter-writer says:— To-day, the munret- ina body, are going to perform an act of ds the ungrateful, rebellious General It is publicly to burn thatSportrait of his t was for some time placed in the hall of the municipality, asatokenot respect and gratitude for those services his party so mach extolled, aud which, prineipally, had been bent on curbing the liberat party of his county, and raising the hateful obgarchs, and, through thes himself to | King of his debased couatry | : ‘This is the first time Lever heard thet Matque- | tiay had @ municipality. 1 believe the only gival Clieerin that pluce is @ justice of the peace, The | writer of the above—wn Englishman—kept the Commercial Hotel in Lagaayra, and, in conses nce of continually :sulting bis boarders, with his hbemliem, in June last, twenty-five ieft him in one day, being the principal foreign merchants im | Luguayra.
