If the demand for breadstuffs continues through the winter, our exports will, doubtless, ex- ceed the imports, and the balance soon be placed in our fav@. The probability of such » demand con- tinuing is very great, and the shipments now making reat extent, in view of a material improve- ment in prices on the other side. The grain harvests of Great Britain were belew an average, both as re- gard quantity and quality This fact is admitted. In many instances, where the test of threshing has been tried, the deficiency has proved greater than an- ticipated. Prices in the principal markets do not fate of things, as the quantity of grain offering was unusually large, which would indicate more than an average supply. When, however, the causes of this are taken into consideration, the actual apparent. The injury to the extensive this year asin any one previous, and the producers were, at the latest are, to show this state of things becom potato crop has been dates, forcing their supplies upon the market, and dis- posing of them, before they were destroyed by disease. At first, this depreciated prices ; but since, they have materially improved. As soon as the supply becomes reduced—and there are two influences at work tending to that result—consumption and disease—the demand for breadstuffs will increase, and prices must expe- rience a correspondingimprovement. In consequence of this, holders of grain were by no means anxious to realize; and in the face of an inactive market, prices for good qualities of wheat had an upward tendency. Previous to the departure of the last steamer, a great deal of wheat unfit for millers’ use, had been offered in the market, and was dispored of to starch makers at rates below those previously quoted, which gave a character to the market which circumstances did not Justify. It is the prevailing impression in Great Bri- tain, that prices will, before the cloce of the wintery range higher than those now current ; but it is the belief that the imports into (he United Kingdom from the Continent, will be sufficient to preventa very high range of prices. That they will go high enough, par- ticularly for Indian corn, to pay a profit on shipments already made from this country, we bave no doubt, but that there will be much margin for an improve- ment here, is not so certain. We confess, we ect cusen. | do not like the idea of the President of the United | States, or his Cabinet, descending from their high | Positions, to engage in stump oratory—it 13, to say the least of it, in exceeding bad taste. It will be seen, that Mr. Buchanan's great aim is to try and heai the division in the democratic ranks, upon the subject of free soil; but the elec. tion is ta near at hand for his views to carry much weight. He takes, however, in our opinion, 2 wise and statesmanlike view of this free soil question; it is, at the beat, ph Miss | TOF IN- | merely one of to-day. it possesses no tangi- bility, and, therefore, will die away a3 soon as the immediate cause of its agitation is re- moved. avery does not exist in California and New Mexico now. It would require legislative action to introduce it, and no one contends that such legislation is either contemplated or desired by the people of those territories, A party, there- fore, founded on mere abstractions, must, ‘sooner or later, fall through. But does not Mr. Buchanan perceive that the very argument he uses to unite the democratic party in Pennsylvania, will also unite the whigs in Ohio and Massachusetts? As we stated before, however, the contest is too near at hand, and prejudices are too firmly seated, for even the most unanswerable propositions to weigh a feather in the seale. If Mr. Buchanan had had resigned his secretaryship three months ago, and stamped 1t throughout Pennsylvania, he might have succeeded 1n i i his party. Now, it is amere waste of breat! fears of the ill-effects which would ensue, im case General Taylor is elected, were rather far-fetched ; and no one knows better than Mr. Buchanan that it is impossible for the President of the United States, no matter what may be his inclination, to enact the part of a Cesar, ‘a Cromwell, or a Bo- naparte. We live, thank God, under a far differ- ent system of government, and ‘t would be just aa easy a matter for the most obacure private indi vidual to trample under foot the constitution, aa it would be for the President to step one 10ta beyond the defined limits of his duty. I: may be very well for party newspapers to talk about the dan gers of a military despotism, in case Generai Taylor is elected, but we were pained to hear Mr Buchanan prostitute his undoubtedly great taleat to the enunciation of such unmitigated stuff. As the New ‘ork Herald is the only paper which publishes these issues, the Times must have examined the returns of this paper, weekly, in order to arrive at the whole amount which it has given. This atten- tion to American affairs, and the respectful man- ner in which the Times treats of them, forme a striking contrast to the tone of that paper some years since ‘ The short telegraph despatch, which I sent oa Saturday, of Mr. Buchanan’s speech, was sadly bungled, whether in the printing office or the telegraph, I cannot say. The account, as it appears in the Herald, reads, ‘He did not believe the de- mocracy of Pennsylvania would find therr principles used for an issue of substance.” 1 wrote, ‘He did not believe the democracy of, Pennsylvania would peril their principles for am issue devoid of substance.” There is a slight difference, it will be perceived, between the two sen‘ences—the first being nonsense, whereas, the latter possesses, I flatter myself, some meaning ‘The democrats here are still unwilling to be- lieve that Ford has been elected Governor of Ohio. It was the wilt ot and left a witl, bequeathing about $30,009 to his boon companions, and cutting off his blood tions, or most of them, with one dollar each. T suit was brought to set aside the will, on the ground that the testator was not, at the time the will was drawn and signed, of sound disposing mind; that he was exposed to undue influences when it was signed; and that the influences and | means to which he was exposed, were fraudulent | These means were proved to be several barrels of whiskey, and a constant watch and guard kept over him until death shuffled him off. The case oceupied ten days, and was finally disposed of by the jury upsetting the will, and directing the execu- tors to-refand all the rents collected. ‘A dreadful accident occurred yesterday 1 ing, in the upper part of the city. Mr. Smith, a pork buteher, was superint rela. at enry ending the , n the walls fell and crushed him terribly. He laid in an in- sensible condition up to a late hour last night Netting on the approaching election, has com-* somewhat to a stand in this city. The democrats are anxious to all their money out on Pennsy!- vaniagoing for Cass; whilst the whigs are ready to bet on the general resuit, but can find very few to take them up.
