This shows the state of public confidence; and a similar state of Haings exists in Groat Britain. The London Chronicle, in speaking of railway stocks, says:—“ The panio which appears to possess the holders of railway shares does not seem to be in the least abated, but rather to have increased. It is a strange anomaly that government securities, paying much lower rate of interet, and, in our opinion, less safe, should remain so steadily at a comparatively high price, when, at the same time, railway shares, yielding six, seven, and eight per cent, should be so de- pressed.” Noone can for a moment doubt the ultimate productiveness of even the most depreciated railroad property in this country, or the safety, as permanent investments, of those now paying good dividends. Railroads are much more profita- ple investments in the United States than in Great Britain or any part of Europe; and those which pay dividends, even in the present state of population, must, long before the country becomes as thickly || he Richelieu Diamond Pointed Gold | peopled as most of Europe, be immeneely productive, ons, are acknowledged to be tie most superior article of the its are fine and sm: and have the Id only by B. It will be perceived, on reference to the above table, that, in seve. ral instances, the shipments exceeded the receipts whioh were drawn from the stock on hand the previou® year—the excess receipts averaging, for the twenty-five annually. Nearly an average of one-balfof the total crop in the country is received at New Orleans, and about two-thirds of the annual rhipments are made from that port. The in- crease in the trade of that port, in this single staple within the past twenty-five years, has been immense. We can hardly anticipate a corresponding increase in the next twenty-five years, as there is not the same room for improvement in the growth of the article, or likely to be such a per cent increase in the consump- tion. A smaller per cent of the produotions will be exported to foreign ports during the next ten years, as our domestic consumption is increasing more rapidly than the production. The reduced prices now ruling for the raw materia}, will have a very important infiu- ence upon the production another year, as the plan- ters will be forced into the cultivation of other crops, particularly that of sugar. One word with respect to the late ection. Schuylkill is a mining county. In 184, it gave a majority of 827 for Shunk, democrat ; in, 1848, it ves a majority of 725 for Johnston, whig, a dit- ference of 1,562 votes in four years, in a single | county. There is nothing to compare with this change in the history of elections by ballot, that | we know of. Inthis late election it stands most ad | suspiciously conspicuous by itself.
