In April. 1846, a German, named Carl Close. arrived bere on his way westward, to a place called Tayloravilla, in Kentucky He met witb ove of the plaintiffs runners, and pur- chased a ticket from him to take him to Cincinnati, which he thought was the nearest route to where he was going. He afterwards discovered that there was another place of the name of Taylorsville in Ohio, and that it was to the latter place the ticket which he got would free him. He after- wards came back, and had some undersanding with the rurner. and was refunded a dollar. Subse- quently, according to the statement of plaintiff's counsel, he went to a boarding house. where he met with some of his countrymen, who told him he had deen cheated, and induced him to lodge @ complaint against the plaintiff at the Mayor's office, who, it was alleged, upon s hearing. dismiared the complaint The matter was then brought before the city grand jary, at the instigation of the defendants, and the plaintit was indicted for fraudulent practices. and gubse- quently tried and acquitted. Words ran high. and blows e saved; the passengers, in some Instances, taking active part. Mr. Eugene Keteltas and Mr, Lucius E. The Court sentenced her to the Penitentiary for three months Pleas of Guitty.—Augustus Nichols plead guilty to acbarge of burglory, in the third degree, in breaking into the store of James H Cronly,at 720 Broadway, on the night of the 9th September last and stealing property valued at $145. The property was returned to the owner, in consequence of which the Court was induced not to give a severe judgment against the prisoner. He was condemned to the State prison for three years, Michael Ryan, indicted for burglary, in the third degree, plead guilty to petit larceny. The Covrt accepted the plea,and sent the prisoner, who was a boy, to the House of Refuge. Triat for an Indecent Assault upon a D Joseph Barricho, a native of Malta. was tried on a charge of having on the Sth instant, committed an indecent assault upon a boy. 14 years of age, named John Farley. The prosecution made out a case of guilty intent, and the jury returned a verdict against the prisoner of “an attempt’? to commit the offeace. He ‘Was remanded to prison. ‘Triut for Grand Larceny.—-Sarah Ann Murray was put upon trial, charged with having stolen $56 in money fiom Victor Vozier, on the 13th of September last, while he wae at the house 26 Oraage street, It appeared from the testimony, that Victor is a French cook. and that on the day of the robbery he had re- turned from @ professional engagement at the Catts- kill Mountain House, aod had about $90 of his sum- mer’s earnings about his person. After looking about the city for awhile, he just took # peep into Orange street ; and being politely invited to walk in at No 26, he conrented, and placed himseif under the pilotage of Sarah Ann ; and that dameel ted him, friendly crea ture, directly to her own apartinents, whither having arrived, she was taken with a wond ful desire to imbibe brandy at his expense Victor was too gallant tc refuse the proposition, and took out his money, but by mistake displayed his largest store instead of the small purse which he kept for present use in his vest pocket, Bathinkiug himself on the jastant, however. he replaced the larger bills, and fumbled in his vest pocket among the oves and silver fractions, whence be finally brought out tive centa; this his fair companion refused, and he finally dded a cent, making up the full price of @ “good nip;?? “for,” remarked Sarah Ann, “I don’t drink none o’that common stuff and besides, you'll want a drink your- relf”? She went out, was absenta few minutes and retorned with some “bad brandy ” which he tasted, and soon after found himself remarkably fatigued, laid down and went to sleep, awakened in afew hours, and wax $86 poorer than when he gave the fivepense and the cent to get “semething good” for Sarah Ann to drink. When fatrly awake, he set himself about en- deavoring to regain his lost money, but his fair hestess knew nothing of the matter, she was, in fast, asin- nocent as the babe unborn,” of the whole matter, and she was. withal, much surprised that the gentlemao should asperse her character, or for one moment ima- gine tbat she was capable of such an act as to take his money while be was esleep.
