There is no accounting for taste. We trust, however, that the spirited firm in quese tion will be able to weather the storm, notwith- standing the portentous appearance of the sky at plesent. In our letter, the other day, whilst speaking of bounty land wariants, we omitted to mention that soldiers ata distance, by forwarding their papers with the necessary vouchers, by mail, to the Pen- sion Office, can have their business attended to, aud their wariants issued and sent to them, as ex. peditiously as if an sgent were employed, and free of expense, We know of instances where agents have obtamed as high as $25 for * prosecu- ting a soldier's ciaim.? This is downright robbery. All the agent has to do, is to leave the papers at the Pens on Office, and when the warrant is prepared, receive it from the Land Office; a matter which requires neither skill nor practice, and which any honest man thould blush to receive pay tor—at all events, a greater remuneration than a messenger would. ask—for the “agent” merely performs the duty of a messenger. Let the disch irged soldiers or their friends, endorse the papers necessary to prove the validity ot the claim to the Pension Office, and gevernment will take eare that no frand 18 com- mitted, and that no unr sary delay exists. As the papers are received, they are numbered and investigated indue order, and no “agent” can ex- pedite the matter. We confess we look with a degzee of horror at the practices of most of these “agents” who endeavor to detraud the poor sol- dier out of the pittanc nted him by bis govern- ment for nsking bis life i the battles of his coun- try. Our soldiers tought nobiy on the biood-stain- ed fields of Mexico, and ve consider it to be the saored duty of every citizen to see that they are not now despoiled by Jaud pirates on therr return home. ‘There 1s to be a democratic meeting here on Wednesday evening, whena “recreant whig” will make !contession in favor ot tie “true faith.” kes quite a hurrah over this, but of course there is more joy over one sinner who re- penteth, than over nwety and nine just persons who need no repentance Ina conversation with a leading Southern de- mocrat this morning, he remarked, that itis a difficult matter to predict who the South would go for—C or Taylor. Southern confidence 1s sha- ken in Northern men. Where was there agreater avowed friend to the South than Mr. Van Buren, and yet look at him now! Mr. Van Buren’s cours will injure Gen. Cass in the South, for it has de- stroyed confidence in Northern men, to a very reat extent. I speak now of the feelings of the people--not of the politicians.” We have no doubt but what there is a good deal of truth in this, and it may aflect measurably the vote in some States. The few whigs that there are in Berks, we believe, are mostly to be found in Reading, the county sent, the whig strength almost uniformly lying in the cities and large towns; but while the county of Lancaster is whig nearly all over, the democrats have the ascendancy in the city. Once, at least, in four years, the contagion of the pole-evil spreads over the country. The op- posing parties in the villages, hamlets, and at the croga-road inns, vie with each other in elevating their candidates and their mottoes; and it seems to be regarded that that party which puts up the largest hickere, has the tallest pros- pect of success ; &)“ if syere were truth in the old The Pr streets. 4th District, Company D, bounded by Hudson and Barrow streets, Sixth avenue, and Amos streets, c mmanded by Corne- lius Clark, Captain, northeast corner of Fourth and Christopher streets. By or {i U'ZpEBBINS, Colouel, idea that the longest pole brings down the persim- mons And it is worthy of remark, too, that, like the chills and fevers, this fever of pole-raising mostly aflects the suburbs of the towns and villages of the interior—the poles being generally the most numerous at the two extremes of the settlements. The whig poles are general'y the best looking: the signs and clap-trap which they haug upon them are, almost without exception, done in better ar- tistical taste than those of the opposite party. This may be readily accounted for. The whigs have more of the elements of the fine arts in their ranks, while the democrats have more of the axe and the plough-handle. We find, too, that the foundries, furnaces, forges, &c., are, to the extent of our travels during this campaign, with not an instance to the contrary, forsworn to Old Rough and Ready, Protection, and the like, on a piece of canvass, swinging near the top of a hundred foot pole. At Reading, over the roof of one of the rolling mille, there is the full equipment of Braga’s Battery, cut out of scheet iron, and fixed upon a horizontal wheel, so that in the lightest wind, the tableau moves in a circle round the flag staff from the sum- mit of which floats out the ticket of Taylor and Fillmore. At the opposite side of the town, there 1s a pole of exceeding height, surmounted by the democratic rooster. The editor of the ‘ Berks County Bible,” so called, pledges the ay that that receter will crow onthe night of the tenth of October, and again on ile 7th pf November, to the tune of 5,000 majority. There are no more coons. We have seen nota solirary coon on the way, save cne, and he was ina livery stable with a fox inthe nextcorner. Whether they were intended as the proxies of “that same old coon” at Ashland, and that same cunning Reynard at Kinderhook, or not, they were immediately suggested on sight ot the ‘animal ‘ 5 The evidences of the spirit of the campaign are all without the enthusiasm of any of the preceding elections for twelve or sixteen years past. _ The canvass of 1840 was a wild uproarious carnival— a jubilee of canoes, cabins, chicken-coops, cider- barrels, swerds, banners, transparencies, songs, and triumphal processions, barbecues, and great rejoicings—the contest of 144 was almost equally ecstatic on i tare of the Kh Bang regs uspicious in the beginning, though not quite overw helming in ite fe ults. The battle of 1848 13 entered into and prosecuted more as a thing of custom than anything else. It is without idolatry, withont eflervescence, and without that clearly de- fined distinction of principles which is necessary to give excitement and zest to the digeussions. The tariffis sull harped upon, but itis an old song—the bank is dead and buried—Jackson is dead—Har- rison is derd—the panic of 1840 is dead—Ifear, Clay is politically dead—the Sub Treasnry is es- tablished-the land distribution is out of the ques- tion, and the excess of our late military glories has rendered the homage to the god of war, rather # matter of fact calculation The only element cf active vitality in the eam- paign is the “free soil” question. Upon that quee- tion the election depends—North and South. | But it grows late for the country. ‘Good night,” says avoice under our window, and we close by ex- tending you the benediction.
