The stock market was a little more active to-day, Dut prices remain about the same as quoted yesterday. ‘The transactions in government securities for several days past, have been unusually limited, owing, proba- bly, to the decline in prices, and the disposition to hold for investment. At the first board, to-day, United States 6’s, 1868, tell off per cent; Ohio 6s, 3; New Haven and Hartford, 4. Farmers’ Loan ad- vanced 34; Long Island, 34; and Norwich and Worees- ter, 144. The movements in this last named stock, clearly illustrates the limited influence of the money market upon the cornering operations of stock specu- Jators. While all other fancies have ateadily declined, this has steadily advanced from 30 to 3534, and from the small sales at the improvement we should judge that the combination intended carrying it up still higher. The state of the money market has, in fact, very little to do with operations ot fancy stocks. We have known an enormous inflation in prices, and the most succeesfal corners fora rise, when money was exce¢dingly scarce, and worth one and two per cent. a month on the best securities, Sterling exchange has been in moderate demand, to-day, for remittance by the Cambria. We quote prime bile on London at 9a 944 per cent. premium. ‘There is so little doing in bills on the Continent, that quotations are nearly nominal. The amount of specie exported from Boston to fo- reign ports during the last week, was $8,864 75; $1,000 of which was in five franc pieces, and went to the West Indies; and the remainder in doubloons, and went to Cape de Verde Islands. The amount imported and entered at the Custom House was $7,008. Unfounded reports concerning this bank having been circulated rome weeks ago, the comptroller felt called upon to test their accuracy by a prompt exami- nation of the affuirs of the bank. The result shows the bank to be in a sound condition and abundantly able to meet allits engagements, as it always has, with readiness and punctuality. The comptroller has given notice that all circulating notes issued by the Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Bank of Ogdensburg must be presented at the comptroller’s office for payment, withim five years from the 28th of August, 1848, or that the funds deposited with the comptroller for the redemption of its notes will be given up toraid bank: The Boston money market is easier. The supply bas increased and the demand diminished. ‘The rates have also declined fully three per cent, both for de- mand and time loans. One of the railroad corpora- tions, which has been in the market for sixty days past, taking all the money it could got en shamefully unlawful terms, has ceased to be a borrower. This fact alone, has aided materially in relieving the mar- ket. The wants of the business community are daily becoming less, and the banks are extending their dis- counts, The amount received for tolls on all the New York State canale, during the third week in August, in each of the past two years, was as annexed :— New Yorx State Canats.—Amounr or Tots, Recelpte, third week in Au; «$101,619 29 Do, | do. do. 82,264 47 Decrease in 1848 - «$19 354 73 ‘The aggregate amount received for tolls , from the commencement of navigation tothe 2lst of August, inclusive, in 1847, was. . $2,080,505 55 During same period in 1! 1,534,378 19 Decrease im 1848... 4. 6 se eees ++ $546,127 36 The falling off, thus far, exceeds thirty-three and a third per cent, but there are indications ofa more ac- tive business on the canals for the remainder of the season, Prices for breadstuffs are likely to improve, and in that event, produce will be pressing for- ward from the interior. Our recent advices from Great Britain and Ireland report the extension of the potato discase, and an injury tothe grain crops by the wet weather. If these accounts are true, and we are disposed to believe that the real state of the crops is much more unfavorable than reported, there must be an active demand for our breadstuffs, and of course, an improvement of some importance in prices The reports which have from time to time reached us, relative to the state of the corn markets, are no orite- rion whatever of the condition of the crops. It must be borne in mind, that those markets are regulated by small cligues of individuals, who give whatever com- plexion to the reports their interests may require, without any regard to the supply or the harvests. Just previous to the departure of a steamer for this coun- try, prices are regulated so as to have a certain influ- ence here. Speculators and producers, on this side of the Atlantic, should be particularly cautious of these reports, and look more to the accounts of the crops and harvest in different parts of the country. They can judge more correctly from these things than from the daily state of prices. This is already pretty well understood on this side, as will be seen by the improve- ment in our markets, in the face of a reported decline in London, previous to the departure of the Britannia. ‘There is a short supply of breadstuffs in the Atlantic markets at this moment, and there are but three months of lake and canal navigation left at the utmost. ‘The receipts in that time must be large enough to sup- ply the consumption of an immense population on the seaboard, and the demand for exportation, for a period of et least mine months; the state of prices, for the next year, depends uponf the probability of that demand being satisfied. It is true, that the comple- tion of the New York and New Haven railroad to Bridgeport, connecting with the Housatonic at tha place, and the Harlem road at Williams’ Bridge, will give usa railroad connection with Albany, and a con- veyance for freight throughout the winter. This will, in @ measure, remove the difficulties we have hereto- fore labored under; but if there is a short supply of breadstufts at the close of navigation, it will take more than one railroad to keep up with the demand If our’ next accounts from Great Britain confirm those recently received, relative to the potato crop, and report amy important danger to the grain cropr, from the wet weather, an impetus will, at once, be given to movements of breadstuffs in this country, and holders will demand a further improve- ment im prices. Even without any very extensive foreign demand, our domestic markets are likely to be sufficiently large to keep prices, pretty well up from this time forward, It will be perceived, on referonce to cur trade report, thut large sales of wheat and corn have been made since the arrival of the steamer, for export, at full prices, showing ® disposition on the part of speculators to be early in the market, to take advan- tage of any improvement in prices, growing out ofany deficiency in the crops of Europe. The question will be settle in a few weeks, but every week, at this sea- son of the year, to holders of breadstuffs {n the inte. rior of this country, is worth » month, earlier in the year, Inthe event of agroat deficiency in the har- vests of England, we may as well abandon all hope for an improvement in prices for cotton, first as last, as it will be entirely out of the question, particularly in the face of the large crop now maturing. The crop now coming to market will be very near twenty-three hun- dred thourand bales, and the new crop will not be much short of twenty-five hundred thousand bales. ‘This immense supply, with the reduced consumption, uit tend to keep prices heavy, with cheap food, but with a short supply of food and of course high prices, eottor it rule low.
