a ‘The Watering Pines. “ Saratoga Srainas, July 30, 1843. Amid the crowd who are now assembled at this gay resort to quaff the waters gushing from the fountains of health, or win a heart hitherto beyond the reach of Cupid’s shafts, or, perhaps, distribute seandal to all who are inclined to listen, I find only afew who can really be denominated dtstingué. Atihe United States, with the exception of the celebrated Mrs. Doctor L——, of Mobile; and B—, the banker, agent of the great Paris house, with his servants and horses; and two or three belles of me- dium magnitude, there are but few who can rank with the élite as stars of great power and attraction. Notwithstanding, we have a little beauty and much geyety at Saratoga, “hops” occur nightly at the “States,” enlivened by Schneider's excellent quadrille dand, and thé fascinating Mrs. L., is the contra! orb om there occasions, around whom all the lesser planets revolve. There has been no material improvements intro- d here since last reason. Several new dances, how- ever, are under practice, and promixe to become bopu- ‘The weather has been covl and pleasant during past week, at this Live while you, in the city, have been sweltering with the oppressive heat. Pray, e@ome up here and take a snuff of the cool breezes which circulate through this valley of health, The Steyermarkieche performers will g ‘te here this week ; and next week, ated with the notes of that “queen of son; dame Anna Bisho; will give only one concert, Suratoga is susceptible of great improvements, and it falls far Tebind the watering towns of England, such as Cheltenham, and Bath, in architectural ornaments. This we ought to expect ; but it has occurred to me, theta fund might be’ raised, amongst those who visit this place, by requiring each visiter to contribute a jeveral be small sum, ray twenty-five or fifty cents annually, to be appropriated in beautifying the waiks and grounds inthe town and muburbe. lvobserve that very little wine is drunk hereat the table—hence there is no need of the precaution which travellers meet with in the pump room of Bath, in Engiand, to this effect, that Bath water is better than Bath wine.” ‘A pacing match came off yesterday afternoon on the race course on the suburbs of the village. The “Village Boy” took the purse, making one mile in 2:26. Jbave been told that the “James K. Polk” broke, and ‘was conrequently beaten. ‘The new Li rail is now laid from Troy to this place, and I would advire visiters to take either the steam ‘Troy, or Empire, breakfast ut the Troy House, and take the new trsck, by which they cau rexch Saratog in ove hour and a half. after entering the care, wit! but the annoyance of changing boats at Albany. The track between Schenectady and Ballston is laid with the old flat rail, and is very unrefe, RICARDO. Conaness Haty, reaa Srrines, August 1, 1818. Yesterday was 2 gloomy and rainy day,.but to- day we have seen on the avenues, some of the most elegant tura-outs in the world. Some of the beau moude who yeside at Saratoga, in the sum- mer, send up their best wardrobes and their best horses and carriages from town. They prepare fora fashionable campaign with the same spirit and extravagance that they prepare fora dinner, on an occasion when kome ove is to be lionized, "To show you how outrageously the riguts of veteran whips and tigers are trampled upon by young wonea of fushion, I eg leave to state, that several days sinee. a very elegant and superb open carriage, with two black horees attach , Was seen passing along one of the obscure roads in the viemity of Saratoga, In this eurriage were seated a venerable lookin: gentleuan, with his wife, and son and daughter; the Gsughter ix a harem scarem creature, beautiful, bo- witehing and accustomed to have her own way as much as possible, In fact, she is a perfect love of a wo- wan, full of fun and fright. Suddenly I saw this young woman rite in the carriage. while the horses Were at a brisk trot, Before her intentions were kuown, the clambered with the agility of a fox, over the for- ward part of the carriage. which separates the driver's pox from the interior, or body of the coxch Iman instant, and without heedi g the inquiry of “ Mary what are you doing?” which came from the lips of her astonirhed father, she was seated in the box beside the driver. 1 did not overhear the persuasive arga- ment she must haye used to get possession of the reins, but the driver relinquished them to her in a moment ; and there she sat a perfect amazon, cracking her whip over a pair of mettlesome horses with a devil may care twinkle in ber eye, and a smile on her lip, which would have made you Jove her, in spite of*yourself. A went the dear little amateur whip. at a rate whi seemed tome rather dangerous ; fortunately, the horves were more manageable than she was. I watched the earriage until it passed out of ght; and it then imme- diately occurred to me, that [had just witnessed a high handed and outrageous invasion of the rights of one of the most amiable andindustrious classes in the commanity= the drivers of private carriages. If any body wirhes to make any suggestions upon the subject, ihey are at liberty to do it. ‘The drawing rooms of tome of the leading hotels, at Saratoga. prerent some extraordinary scenes of fashion. ‘Vhe characters at Saratoga may be divided into four iferent classes, or subdivisions: 1, The nabobs—the actual miliionsres—the butterflies of the hour ; 2. hy, and respectable people, who are very sensible, and Who have not been epoiled by prosperity ; 3. The young bucks and batchelors, and cosinopoliies —the untamed colts of both sexes—the men of straw, who have no brains or money to lose, and who have to ay carefully to win the hand of some charming little Reifess, or to wine fifty, at a faro bank, when their stock of funds is getting low, and when it is desirable to bave them replenished; 4. The bankrupts, who, after a terrible effort. have inanaged to eerape money enongh together to bring their wives and daughters to Saratoga, for the purpose of forcing them into the so- ciety of fashionable people ; this class of characters, by some trick or other, generally succeed in making them- seives observed ; they are mere pretenders, who ought rather to remain quietly at home, attending to their ruined affairs, than to visit a place like Saratoga, for the Rerpees, of passing themselves off for something which they are not. In the drawing rooms of some of the leadirg hotels, you will see all these classes of characters represented with wonderful precision. You are able to detect each elage with (the utmost vase. The most favorable opportunity for observing them, is probably at the opening fa bail At a signal, the doors of the bal chambre are thrown open ; a strain of lively music finds its way to the distant parlor—this stray note is followed by others louder and livelier ; they reach the ears of the throng of fashion and beauty, and Fig and hollow ware, which is gathered in the public draw- ing room. The buzzing, hissing gossip, of this vast throng. suddenly ceases; and some matron, bolder than therert, with a daughter on each arm, leads the way to the ballroom. Jt shoul. be understood that there are no ball rooms in any of the hotels at Saratoga ; the rame room is use] in the day fora dining room, and, in the evening, for a ballroom Some of these rooms are very large and convenient for dancing.— ‘The matron, who took te lead with her fair daughters, is immediately: followed by the bevy of fashion, and glory and holiow wore, until, at length, all the classes of charactersyI have described, are n merously and faithfully represented in the great ball room. or dinin, room. ‘ihe rear ofthe procession of beauty an wrinkles, and affectation and grease, is generally com- pond of fifty or more ofthe young bucks, or men of rtraw, who usually pause at the door to fuss with their white kid gloves, or to alter the position of their dickeys, or to give their luxuriant locks a final tou:h with the tips of their delicate fingers. These young suns, standing in the door of the ball room, going through these various performances, present au amusing appearance. and often create considerable mirth among some of the observers. The entire party being gathered in the ball room, you must admit that you havea magnificent bijou before you, You have beauties in boots, and beauties with bire arms ; there eppears to be @ disposition in rome quarters to imitate as far as they dare, the dress of the Model Artists, whose exhibitions were recently intervieted in New York. Now, this new whim is one of the most musing thivgs in the world; and the po- sition of this class of young women in the ball room is by no means obsoure, but. is very prominent and Inugbable and brilliant, Fifty of these voluptuous creatures, in charming deshabille, remind me of no- thing more forcibly than the proverbs of Solomon. You have, then, ali there classes of characters befor you Some of them are seated, and some of them ar» stonding in groups, very busily engaged in gossipin : about the last new novel, er about Miss Hockendid- dle’s drers,cr about some other profound humbug. You will ebeervo, that in these groups there are indi- vidusls who are continually tuking observations o certain objecta at the other end of the room, or in rome other remote quarter, These observations are frequently made without any regard for modesty or for the feelings of the object at which the attention of the whole group has been directed by the indivi- dual who is engaged in taking observations, ‘This poor creature at whim all these glasses are poised, may be, perhaps. atimtd girl, from the country, or @ member of the extreme gauche ; the consequence is, that rhe not unfrequentiy finds herself obliged to re- tire from the room. In this case, some new victim is relected by these philosophers. who may be regarded as astronomers upon a very email scale, Among the most yoluble individuals in this group. we may observe Mrs. P——, whose daughter bay jurt ‘come out.’ ‘The claims of Mrs. P——- to high breeding and to no- ble blood are indisputable. She is a descendant of the P's of Seotland, the paternal ances‘ of whom it is well known was a grandson of Robert Bruce, The daughter is weally achawming cweatsha! ‘All these various characters heving mado their trée into the room. you hear the * voluptuous swell” of the munic. and the dunce begins. You will observe the rons of gentlemen mingling and competing with that clase of characters known as men of straw ; and ‘ou will observe well-Bred and accomplished women Joalog in the dance with mysterious persons, who find their way into fashionable vociety here with the me ence that the men of straw do. " We wish to inquire what, in this gay and briliiant binge, e for beggars, and we wish to con’ thet the not the lightest chances for them in any shape. ‘Though a groat number of Degears incognito are tolerated in tho room; yet, if a single beggar, in character, should show hix head in- side the door he would be thrust from the room without ‘the benefit of clergy. or of one imploring glnoce at the bright eyes of the Prautifal women. ‘Thisis the reason why the beggara resort to such remarkable shifts to al their poverty, in order to gain admission into ble Focioty, ax they cboore to term it. Now watched two of those poor devils of baggara, when they have keen iniroduced to each other by an individual whom you may calls third party. ‘Thos: Deggars.on an introdaction commence 4 cxreful exam ination of each other's dress for certain reasons; they begin with the boote, which they seem to eonsider on important article of apparel, and which they ex- amino with marked attention; they next take a bisd' eye view of the cent, the chirt borore, (if they happra 16 Lave ery chitton) the hat, the walslooa&e , xe JM, at the clove of (he camminetion eaoh ke fatisfed fa with the dress of the other they ecem to cousider themselves as mevs, but if the lee gem your ion the produets of this country; is clearly iMustrate by the above statement of exports, and the retutive value of other warkets is also presented, y delay; these individuais prefer arise iu the social seals rather than a fail; the latter is what they most dread. and hence the shifts and rhicks und mgatety to which they resort; because, if any thing in regurd to the actual state of their financlal affairs should be as- certained, they would be * cut’ by all the bloods aud bruisers and lovely young women It iv easily seen how tmportant it is that they should conceal the fact that they are beguars It is understeBd perfectly well in this country that all young women, when they reach @ certain age, wish to be provided with hand ome husbands; this is a tural fact which nobody can disprove ‘A great many of tho-e young women who come to Saratuzaevery year in search of husbands, are known to be rich; and a great many others are known to have no money or property of apy kind, Now | bave shown that beggars have no chances here. and I with now to show Chat poer young women huve no chance of suscess in co peting with rich young women for husbands, [ha reon in the fashionable drawing rooms in Saratoga, the davghters of rome of the mo:t respectable citizens in the State; I have seen them accomplished in polite learning. and in ail the caprices and elegancies of fash- jonable life. I know of no women more lovely or more refined; they are in many instances women of great © to the rmallest rum, and that country now ranks as the tenth in the liet, when it usually ranket secomd or | third, ‘The second now im the list are the East Indies, and the third the West ludies Of more than two millions of dollars exported curing the month, only $275,145 | went to the continent of Europe, The whole of the continental trade does not, therefore, amount to mue! and bas become reduced as much as it ean well b without being wholly extinguished. ‘The political di turlances in that section of the world, with the excep. | tion of France, may soon be sufficiently settled to per. mit « return of activity in the principal departments cf industry; and axy change cannot but be favorable | to an inercase of trade with those counttfes, We have, within the past six months, experienced a greater revolution in our foreign export trade than | ever before in the same length of time, and it is a moat | ez are in many jnstex vn of great astonishing fact that, amidst this rapid decline in our Reulect which they hure experienced im those deawing | Sbipments—coming, as it did, immediately at the close rooms?
