“The ‘Wizard of the Wave’’ were the pieces performed last evening—both of them splendid spectacle pieces, re- plete with. elegant scenery, beautiful decorations, fine tableaux, dances, songs, &e., all performed in first-rate style by the talented Bowery company. Miss Taylor in the first piece was the prominent character as the ‘warlike and beautifal queen of the nymphs and guar- dian +prites of the Rhine. +The Naiad Qui > has proved immensely attractive ; and it is really amusing Pe witness the delight and onthusiasm displayed by the audience as cach successive scene dot. J. H. Hall as Rupert the Fearnought, “with his shining casque and mished blade,’ makes an excellent knight, sans peur et sans reproche. The dances, tableaux, &c., enlivened by the comicalities of Burke as the squire of Rupert, were really beautiful. particu- larly the tableau at the end of the second act, where Rupert pledges his heart and sword to the fair queen. i the Wizard of the Wave,” with all its remarkable stage effects, of such a novel and pleasing character, also went off in fine style, Mr. Marshall, as usual, being most correct and excellent in his part of the commander of the Wizard, the prominent part of the piece. To-night ‘ The Naiad Queen” will be repeated; nd, in addition to it, the famous piece ot “ Cherry and Fair Star’? will be acted, Mies Taylor taking the prominent parts in both pieces. No plsssanter way of passing there long summer evenings can be found jan in visiting the Bowery and witnessing the fine pieces played there. Nisio’s Tueatre.—This magnificent theatre was attended, last evening, by @ brilliant assemblage of the beauty and fashion of the city. The en- tertainments commenced with the interesting co- medietta of “Grist to the Mill,’ which was formed throughout in anexcelient manner, Miss Telbin, the best actress in her line in the Union, played the part of Francine to the very life, and re- ceived repeated cheers, and was called before the cur- tain to receive the marked favors of the audience. The Marquis de Richeville was ably sustained by the ster- ling comedian, Chippendale, who is always agrosable in every character he undertakes. Mr. Dawson, as the Covnt. was admirable. La Varsovienne, by Julia and Fiora Lehman, was gracefully executed; andthe Pas de Trois, by Adelaide, Mathilde, and Mons. Schmidt, was given with such ease, elegance, and graceful figures that reiterated cheers followed its execution. The concluding piece was the pantomime of Vol au Vent, in which the agile Mercetti, kept the audience in roars of laughter by his exceeding comic action. Niblo 4s sure to go ahead, as he is indefatigable in his exer- tions te cater well for his patrons. He has engaged other celebrated artists who will appear on Monday evening. Cnatnam Tueatre.—The season at this house is rag pidly coming toaclose, and the manager can, with truth, boast that his theatre is fully patronized to the last, as every night the house is crowded to its utmost capacity, and the applause is as vociferous as ever. The eccentricities of Chanfrau, as Mose; the vivacity of Miss Mestayer, ad]t.ize, the jocularity of Wiaans, and the general excelience of allthe members of the company, are such as to keep the ball rolling pretty lively at the Chatham. Last night, after the amusing piece cf © Land Sharks ‘and Sea Gulls,” and the Very pretty comedy of “Nature and Philosonhy.”” the great “Glance at New York’? was performed with much applause, and the pretty musical piece of “Paul and Virginia’? concluded the entertain- ments, To-night a capital bill will be presented, for which we refer to the advertisement. By the bye, at the close of the season, the members of the company, 2d, in fact, all attached to the house, intend giving their worthy young manager, Mr. Cuantrau, a compli: mentary benefit. This speaks well for the harmony and good feeling ameng the members of this capital company, ind we doubt not that they will have a fine house on the occasion, when a first rate bill will be presented, Burton's Tueatne, Cuampens Street. —Toais dar- ling little theatre, under the skilfal guigance of Bur- ton and Brougham, aided by its happy location and convenient proximitics, being within pistol-shot of the Astor House and the Park, nightly attracts overflowing houses. Last evening Mr. Crisp, as Tristram Fickle, and Miss Chapman as Fariella, added, if possible, to the enthusiasm of the audience in theirfavor They are decidedly great favorites of the public, and well deserve to be so. The “ Irish Dragoon”? was again performed, in which Mr. and Mrs. Brougham sustained the principal parts with unexampled talent and rare success. Of the rich, dazzling, and fascinating repre- sentations of the Viennoise troupe of danseuses, it is mot necessary here that we should eat our eulo- giums. ‘The Eastern monarch who was dying of ennui, and offered a reward to any one who would discover a new pleasure, might have tound it, we think, if he had come here, as far as the ocular faculty can find it. A yvsit to Burton’s would, we are tempted to believe, Dave satisfied the craving desires of the pleasure-seek: ‘er, avd our skilful New York managers, or some among tiem all, would surely have been able to claim the re- ‘ward. Caste Ganpven.—Quite a large and highly respectee ple audience attended this capacious and favorite sum- mer resort Jast evening. when, if any went there trou- bled with a touch of the “blue devils,” we feel satis- fied that the rufferers got completely cured before they Jeft In fact. such palatable and effective doses of the real “ Holland,” as are administered here, never fail to Yelieve the very worst cases of ennut ‘The entertain- ments commenced with that lively comedietta of the * Post of Honor.” in which Mr. Holland kept the audi- ence in roars of laughter by his representation of Co- ‘tus Yerks. The “Pas Villageois,”’ was then danted ‘vey gracefully by Miss Barber. Mrs. Frary, also Mrs. H. and Mies Phillips, were warmly applauded in their yoeal olio, which was succeeded by the celebrated “ Grand Duo,” executed on the double bass and vio- lin, by thore wonderful instrumental performers Signor Bottesini ani Arditi, who drew forth the most un- pounded applaure, The fantasia on “I Due Fos- wari.’ executed by Sig. Arditi, on his violin, won additional laurels. The cosmoramic v.ews, which have recently been rearranged and rendered doubly attrac- tive, appeared greatly to edify the visitors last evening. The amusements were concluded by the performan: of the new fycetious burletta and aid laughable e: travigat x» entitled’Crusoe II., in which the inimitable Holland appeared as Marmaduke Snodgrass, alias Fri- da, and the favorite and accomplished actreis Mrs. Frary as Clementina, or Mrs. Mates in search of her ‘husband, with flattering success. To-night we are to have three choice pieces, the first of which is that po- ular comedy of “ Done on Both Sides,’ Mr. Holland Miaring ‘as Mr. Pygmalion Phibbs. The second piece, the interesting dramatic anecdote of “ Box & Cox,” and arepetition of that laugh-compelling extravaganza of « Crusoe the 2d,” besides the performances of Chubbee® the eminently gifted Indian chieftain, who, on the flute and the saucepaneana, will astonish the visitors by his execution of « Auld Lang Syne,” “ The Fisher's Hornpipe,” and “ Life on the Ocean Wave.” Curisty’s Minstrets have only three more evenings to spare to New York—and one afternoon concert on Saturday. Their excellence and superiority as Ethio- ean minstrels, are so wellknown and universally ac- nowledged, that these parting concerts will doubtless be fully attended. Tapernactr—SteveERMARKIsHE.—These harmo riot 8 performers gave, last evening, their eleventh grand concert, which was well attended, avd the assembly seemed highly delighted in hearing their bewitching music. The entertainment began with the“Graud Coliveum March,” which wasexecuted to perfection. as ‘wellas the overture to “Lestoch *? The finale tothe «Jewess” foom Halevy, was received with unbounded ap- jause ; and the tableux of harmony, entitled “The Night's Review,’ was performed in a masterly than- ner, The “Jubilee Quadrille.’’ as also the “United States Polka,’ were a splendid combination of the most beautiful strains, and made a great sensation among ali present. Their soiree masicale ended with the waltz of “Welcome in the{Greenwood,” and the gallop, “First Evergreen,” which are among the dances of Labitkzy, the prettiest we have ever heard. The Steyermarkishe are nightly improving in the engoue- ment of our people, and they deserve the success they have met with. These eminent performers will give ® concert this evening at the Female Academy, Brook- lyn. Their great popularity in our sister city will in- fure them a full house. Signora Ciocea, the celebrated danseuse, is perform- ing at the Albany museum. Wednesday, Jaly 12.6 P.M. It was announced early in the morning that the | steamship Niagaraj was telegraphed below Boston, and business of all kinds was suspended. The sales at the bord were made while all was doubt, and the prices ruling are therefore independent of the com- plexion of the news. Soon after the adjournment | of the board the tenor of the news was announced, | and the greatest excitement prevailed. All business _ was at a stand still, and knots of people were in all | parts of the street, discussing the nature and effect of | the accounts, As yet the news has had no effect upon the markets, but the general impression is that it will be good. There were only two sales at the #2cond board, which shows the little disposition to operate until something more definite is known of a ‘fairs on the other side. It will be pereeived by the annexed statement, | that the State bas been compeiled to issue a stock for tie redemption of issues of suspended Safety Fund banks, in anticipation of payments into the fund by the 1enaining solvent banks of the State, established upon that system. Every incorporated bank, now in existence in this State, has to depend entirely upon itself, and the bills have no other security than the solvency of each insti- tition issuing thom, This fact, in connection with the statements recently published of the condition of the Safety Fund banks generaily, is sufficient to with- draw at once the confidence of bill holders, and throw their issues at once upon them for redemption. The Pablic have long been deceived by this “Safely Fund,” a) it bas been called, and it is full time the system sould be clearly understood. The returns published in to-day’s—Wednesday—Herald, show that some of the banks, doing business under this system, have a circ lation in the neighborhood of two hundred thousand dollars, and specie on band of only about three thou- sind dollars. his exhibits a weakness calculated to alarm any bill holder, as the result of even a limited a@-mand for specie must inevitably be an explosion. Since the Ist of July several railroad companies in New England have reduced their charges per iile for | the transportation of passengers, and most of the com- panies in Massachusetts now charge but two cents por mile. In thickly settled parts of the country, low fares are decidedly the most productive rates, and all those companies which have adopted them havo re- alized an increase in their receipts, Railroads diverg- ing from and connected directly with this city, have the lowest tariff of charges; andthe fact that all of them do not pay dividends, is no argument against the soundness of the policy In all thickly settled sections of the country, low fare must ultimately prove the most productive, and railroads in all parts of the coun. try must, sooner or later, adopt a much lower tariff’ 0; evarges than is at present enforced, The anne>ed | statement exhibits the length of the principal rail- rovds in the United States, the through fare, and rate per mile :— Rai.RoADS OF THE Usiren Srares, -B: ston to Portland, Boston and Maine—do. do... It will be perceived that some of the charges on the Southern lines are double and treble those of the North and East. There is a necessity for this in the comparatively limited passage traffic. In the North and East the most productive rate is ten cents per mile. Every section of New England is thickly enough settled to make that rate profitable, and we have no doubt it will be generally adopted. The New York, Harlem and Albany Railroad must ultimately be the most productive passenger line in the country, and its revenue from that source, at ten cents per mile, will probably exceed that of any other road in the coun- try. Terminating in the very heart ofthe largest city in the Union, with branches extending into the most densely populated portion of the Eastern and North- ern States, it must soon be exceedingly productive.— ‘The passenger business, of all railroad companies, is the best paying part of the traffic, and any line favora- bly located for that, must be good dividend paying in- vestments. Cotton Trade Since the departure of the America, on the 27th ult., butasimall quantity of Cotton has been brought out for tale, Up to Saturday, Ist inst., the weather was excessively hot and enervating, and the baying dtd | not exceed 600 bales daily, some portion of which was dy Continental shippers ; on that day we received the mail per Cambria, which arrived at Boston the preced- ing day—her accounts of a weak market —quotations reduced one-eighth and holders pressing for sales— did not help us, and in fact rendered the business on that day and the Monday following, of so meagre a de- ription that it is believed that the sales of the two days, did not in the aggregate, exceed 300 bales. ‘Tue day being the National Birth:day, of course uo busi nest was transacted. On Wednesday, 6th inst., a small enquiry was felt, and 400. bales were disposed of, at a reduction of about a quarter of a cent over * Mid dling,” the price of that specific grade being well main- tained. On Thursday, 600 bales wore disposed of at the same line of prices. On Friday, 1500, and it was | noticed that buyers bid more freely at the close of th day. OnSaturday, a harder market was perceptibl and 700 bales were taken before ‘Change, at rates one” eighth better than the average sales of the preceding | dey; after that hour we had a telegraphic despatch | from Boston, with a ineagre account of the market at Liverpool. per Caledonia, received by the News steamer from Halifux—suficient. however, t> show that a more fayorable turn had taken place at Liverpool, holders having recovered from the panic they had displayed during the previous week, and the large requirements | of the home trade had been met by -ufficient steadi- | noss to create an advance of 34d on their previous sale [About 600 bales were taken’ for export that afternoon, | ‘at prices one-eighth of a cent better than were paid in the morning. By the receipt of letters yesterday, the steamer having arrived on Sunday, we more clearly | eive that holders had spoiled their own market for the two preceding weeks, there existing no well found- ed reason for the anxiety they displayed to realize at | the low prices then ruling ; many healthy and improv- ing indications being apparent; such as the band- loom weavers being employed to a great extent, which would not be the case if the trade at Manchester was as ruinous as the leading organs of the manufacturers there would have us be In fact, it seems that sales there for the home trade were so free that it was almost impossible to make contracte ahead, except at constantly improving prices, in the face of a steady | pressure at Liverpool, to sell at the low standard of 4a | for fair Uplands and Mobiles. | ‘The market yesterday was poorly attended, and the sales were confined to small parcels to fill out orders, some little increase of firmness being exhibitel by holders, who remain indifferent about sales at the pre- ent quotationr, which are mainly the same as before.
