With Genera; Cass there would be no hope, whilst with General Tay- lor the whigs have every thing to hope for. He still complains, however, of the desertion and indiscretion of his friends im haviog urged him into the canvass. It is rather a diffeult mai to fully describe the cause of the want of enthusiasm among the whigs of Baltimore for General Taylor. It is generally sup- posed to be caused by disappointment anil chagrin; but such is not the case. Had re have been no part, Mines drawn before the convention—that is to say, all the of the city been united on Henry Clay— they would be found equally as united for General Taylor now. Yesterday, William By- erley, with a number of others, embarked for a sail down tho river, but there being no wind had to put back towards the city. Byerley was attacked with sickness, the result of a coup de soleil, from which he has not yet recovered. He has regained his senses, but not the faculty of speech. The extensive building of Mr. James Swaim, at the corner of Seventh and Chesnut streets, is Row complet ed, and ready for rent, It is believed to be the Jargest and most iniposing edifice ever crected in this city by ue individual, being five stories, or 76 feet high, by 80 feet front, and 100 deep. The dark, rich freestone, from Thom’s quarries, give air of peculiar grandeur and diguity to the edifice. style of architecture is a blending of the Roman with the more modern Paladian or Venitian—its heavy cornices, balustrades and window dressings, producing hazacteristic effect, with the purposes for which the building is intended, to wit : stores and sale rooms in che lower stories; the second and third are divided into ro Tooms each, making four sale rooms, forty by eighty teet—the two upper stories being thrown into one, forming one of the most splendid saloons for an ex- hibition im the city. That I highly appreciate and take pleasure in gratifying the hu- manity whieh dictated those communications will be proved by my general order, of which a copy is en- closed. It will be seen from thore orders that I have extend- ed a free and full pardon to all Mexican prisoners, in- cluding those of the company of San Patricio, and to all Americans whom our own purposes of discipline do not absolutely require to be retained for # time in con- finement. ‘The prisoners sentenced for murder and robbery, in whose behalf is made your appeal of May 24, will be Tiberated #0 soon as the troops shell have evacuated this country. Their offence was of the blackest charac ter; but, even in sograve acase, I have been unwiill ding of blood. : It gives me great satisfaction that, in complying with your requests, I have heen able to afford so strong an evidence of my desire that this happy peace may wipe out forever betweem Mexicans and Americans all bit- terness of feeling and all past offences. ‘With high consideration for yourself, and for the so- ciety over which you preside, | remain, sir, very re- spectfully, your obedient servant, poctfaly) YUE YM. 0. They made the Prefect priso- ner, and proclaimed a ‘plan’ disavowing the present Mexican Congress, and declaring that the States would resume their sovereignty for the continuation of the war, From Lagos the pronunciados proceeded to Ciene- ga de Mata in cearch of arms. It is supposed that the government is inclined to chastire these disturbers of the peace with reverity, as it has already taken the necessury measures for so doing. A letter from Queretaro, dated 4th instant, says that tals movement of Jarauta is directed and controlied by Paredes, who is determined to effect a revolution in favor of his monarchical schemes. fe is aceused of fomenting the Iudian insurrections. The cries or rites with which Jarauta entered Lagos, were“ Hurra tor the monareby,”’ “ Death to the liberals.” and “War upon the Yankees.” His numbers, however, are eon- temptibly insiguigcant. Jarauta threatens to hang a wi bim in waging war against T letters from Quere- taro say that Jarauta’s plans had proved totally abor- tive. from the wholesale desertion of his few followers. The Siglo says that more than thirty (300!) Ame- ricant soldiers have determined to remain fn Mexico, aud with them many officers, who have offered their services to the Mexicam government. The soasions of Congress were to be suspended at Queretaro on the 13th, to be resumed in the city of Mexico on the 16th. In this connection we give the owl ng letter from Mexico : ~ par monly June 13 —Gen. The Kentucky brigade, under command of Col, Thompson, 3d Kentueky inont, forming ,a portion of Generai Marshall's division, are ¢ on # beautiful stream, about four miles back, where they will remain until Tuesday morning, when they move to El Encero. Msjor Polk us the day before yesterday, bear- ing the ratified treaty of He reports all quiet in the eity, with the exception of some slight manifesta tions of feeling against those Mexicans who are sup- posed to have particularly favored the Americans. This is not improba- ble, a3 such things were done at Cuernavaca and Sau Angel very soon after our troops left those places, and before I left the city. An order has been issued by General Marshall, since his arrival here, that all persons who have been in any way connected with gambling establishments in Mexico, should leave the Department of Jalapa within twelve hours after their arrival. As the town was com- pletely’ filled with these gentry, the commotion and excitement caused by the receipt of this order w: intense, and denunciations both loud and deep mig! be heard on all sides, About two hundred of them left to-day, while » few have determined rather to brave the wrath of “ fut Tom’? than the vomit The health of the volunteer troops here and at En- cero is very good.
