Trist, Esq., is en route for Washington, to which place, though a private American citizen, he was ordered by Major Gen. Butler. We had tho pleasure of an interview with Mr. Trist, and were no less astonished than sur- prised to learn from him that ho was actually a mili- tary prisoner—as such he returned to the United States, and as such should report himself to the Presi- dent on reaching the city of Washington. There can be but one opinion as to the flagrant abuse of power in his arrest and ejection from Mexico by order of the President of the United States. Mr. Trist takes the Northern route, via the Illinois and Michigan canal.— St. Louis New John Gossin, the Clown. Hupson, June 2, 1848, James Gorvon Bexnert, Esq.:— Eprrorn New Yon Heratp :- Sin :—I beg leave most respectfully to ask that you will contradict a rumor which has been circulated, pre- Judicial to my good name and professional prosperity, in reference to the murder of Meighan, in Leonard street, some time since. I was not arrested at all, but attended mere- ly as awitness, under a subpoena, and gave testimony, which is now, I believe, in possession of Justice Os- borne. MONEY MARKET. Monday, June 5—6 P. M. ‘The stock market opened heavy this morning as re- gards prices, At the first board, Norwich and Wor- r fell of ¢ per cent; Erie Railroad, new, % ; Erie, old, 44 ; Long Island advanced ¥y ; Reading Rail- road 34, and Treasury Notes 34; all others closed at prices current on Saturday. At the second board, Harlem declined 14 per cent, Long Island 4, and the market closed with a tendency downward. The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company have de- clared a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent. ‘The Mechanics’ Banking Association has declared a semi-annual dividend of three anda half per cent. A new counterfeit $3 note on the Fairfield Co. Bank, Conn., has made its appearance in Philadelphia. ‘The bill is well executed. Tho plate appears to be new, and has a steamboat for a vignette, with medalion heads on either side of it, and a figure 3 on cach corner. They are made payable to bearer, dated at various pe- riods, and signed C. Bissell, President, and T. Warner, Jr.. Cashier, The word “Connecticut” appears at the top of the bill, directly over the vignette. The first two figures of the year, namely, 18, have been first printed, but not being very plain, are marked over with ink. The receipts of the Long Island Railroad Company for the month of May, 1848, were $13,552, against $11,800 for the corresponding month in 1847, showing an increase this year of $1,752. The Vicksburgh and Jackson Railroad has been sur rendered to Mr. Washington Jackson, the purchaser at the sheriff sale, some month or more since. He had given the bank a sufficient time to redeem the road, by refunding him his purchage money, It was expected at that time that the United States Bank and the Gi- rard Bank would advance the necessary sum required to remove the encumbrance, as both of these banks held large claims against the Vicksburg Bank, which they could only secure by retaining possession, or by obtaining possession of the railroad, there being no other property of any amount, and few or no assets that would be worth the cost of collection. Ths effort to raise the money was made in Philadelphia, but appears to have failed entirely ; or, at any rate, no arrange- mont appears to have been made, except to authorize an agent at Vicksburgh to draw for some $75,000, which was done in favor of Mr. Jackson. ‘This amount, howeve: would not induce him to longer postpone his rights He insisted that the possession of the road should be given; his demands were yielded to, and the Vicks- burg and Jackson Railroad, with a clear income over all expenses, of at least $75,000 per year,is now the Property of a private citizen of England, and has been obtained for a debt of some $150,000, originally, but which was since sold at a bankrupt sale for $6,000. Tho quantity of coal shipped from the Schuylkill coal region on the Schuylkill canal, for the week end- ing June Ist, was 15,084 tons; previous shipments, 84,566 tons, making an aggregate for the season of 99,651 tons, The amount of coal transported on this work, will, if the increase continue, be equal to the transportations on the Reading Railroad. ‘The capa- city of the canal is probably equal to that of the rail- road for coal business—and the only drawback at present, is a short supply of boats. This difficulty is rapidly disappearing, when the receipts of coal from that region will probably exceed anything ever before realized. The Lehigh coal trade has been pretty active this season. The shipments from the Lehigh region for the week ending the Ist inst., was 22.289 tons, and for the season thus far,135,070tons. There is likely to be a good supply of anthracite coal this year, and the pro- bability is, that by the middle of September, prices will be as low as at any time during the year. Consumers would find it to their advantage te stock themselves before the cold weather sets in. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the aggregate value of merchandise and the total amount of specie shipped from this port during the month of May, distinguish- ing the value of domestic produce from foreign, and showing the extent of shipments to each place:— Commence of tHe Pont or New Yorx, May, 1848, Value of Am. The value of merchandise exported for the corresponding month in 1847, was $4,001,864, showing a decrease for the month this year of $1,537,126. The aggregate ex- portation for the month in 1848, including specie, ex- ceeds that for the month last year. ‘The immense fall- ing off in the shipments of breadstuffs this year, crea- ted the impression in our mind that the value of our exports was actually much less than the amount offi- cially reported; but it appears that the shipmonts of provisions and other articles have made up a part of the deficiency produced by the limited demand for flour and grain in Europe, and that our foreign trade, so far 4s this port is concerned, is not in such a dosperate po- sition as anticipated. The valuo of merchandise ex- ported from this port in cach of the first five months of the past three years, was as annexed: Commence on THe Port or New Yorx—Vaw 1846, i ¥ ov Exports.
