the and adjournment of the Demogras tic National Convention, which will be found om the first page. Little waa done in Congreas yester- day. The Senate was not in session; and the House might as well have followed suit in the game of idleness, for all the business that was done.— Their labors, however, are given below. Accounts of executions, murders, markets, shipping news, &e. &e., were also received through this rapid channel of communication, which we subjoin. THIRTIETH CONGRESS. FIRST SESSION. Wood, Foucher, Harker, and Woodhull, Miss Fanny Hubbard. and thirty discharged and disabled soldiers ‘The remains of Lieut. Col. William S. Hamilton, of St. Francisville, La., and of Lieut. Col. Dougherty, a dis- charged teamster, formerly of this city, died on the passage. FROM TRE INTERIOR. (From the American Star of the 3d inst.) Our papers from the interior, last evening. do not bring us 4 single item of interest. The Queretaro pa- pers make no reference to a quorum or to any revolu- tionary movement in that city. We have the contents of a private letter, howeve: ich states that a quorum had been formed, and nothing prevented the meeting of Congress but some religious pageant or procession, Jarauta was at San Luis, in tie very best of spirits, and about leaving that city for Queretaro, Bustamente was employing himself in opening the mail from Do- lores to the seat of government. ‘The prevailing opin- fon was that the new Congress would despatch bu: ness, and come toa decision in regard to the treaty in a yery fow days after coming together, [From the American Star of the 4th May] FROM QUERETARO. A private express came in yesterday at noon, and we learned that the Government at Queretaro was consi- derably embarrassed. because the question had been raised whether the Federal Government had the right to cede any State or portion of a State without the co: sent of such State. The States of Mexico, generally, go in tooth-and-nail for State rights, and it has Deen some time apprehended that such an objection would be urged hy the opposition We learn from Mexican authority that the Govern- ment of Queretaro has yielded several points of eti- quette which they had previously held to, and one of them the admission into their capital of an American escort of sixty men with the Commissioners. We have been told, however, that the Commissioners do not go up until advised as to the time by the Government; in other words, when they are ready to re; them they will tell them to come. Memrits Races.—The races at Memphis commenc- ed on the Sth inst. We copy from the Herald :—There were only two entries for the purse-—Lin Cock’s bay filly and Col. Tunstall’s bay colt. The filly was deei- ded by the favorite before starting, and the ease with which she won the first heat, increased the odds to three and five to o: Yet. there were those in atten- dance not very backward in taking the offered bets.- At the second start, e mare again led off handsome- ly, but on the backs etch, the colt came up with the greatest ease, passing her, and winning the heat with but little exertion. ‘The odds that wore at first offered ‘on the mare, were now changed to the horse, but the distressed state of the mare prevented them from being taken, On the third start, the horse led off and won the heat easily, running under » heavy pull all the time, The track was in superior order, aud the atten- dance gor The cock main, Tennessee vs. Mississippi, also began on the Sth ; three battles ouly were fought, of which Missivsippi won two ; the betting was liberal, cerning York State was yain attempts of the Hunkers to make a promise of those thirty-six votes. Dickinson, Tremaine, and Sickles, it was ag uphill business to promise the State of New York. Oh! most delusive en- thusiasm, that which your fealty to the Conven- tion elicited! The barnbumers had evacuated the premises—you could speak without reserve ; but their ghosts, like Banquo’s bloody spectre, re- mained behind. New York is lost. The.ticket is a strong one. It has the essential feature of the drum and fife in both the nominees; it would seem to have been expressly con- and it vouleccure all the West. and Southwest, to make up the deficit of the Empire State. But we do think that Gen. Cass wil have an uncom- monly laborious task before him to get to the White House, But victory, said Napoleon, at St. Jean d’Acre, is to the most persevering. This de- cided military ticket of the democracy seems to have been selected with another view than to make up tor the deficiency of New York. The convention have considered the nomination of Gen. Taylor as a foregone conclusion—they have acted with an express object of meeting the whig drum and fife, by the strongest military music in the democratic ranks. “ ass There was another democratic mass meeting in front of the Court House to-night, at which the speaking was kept up till eleven o’clock. Messrs. Bright, of Indiana; *Frazer, of Pa. , Tremaine, of New York; Haralson, of Ga.; Wright, of New Jersey, and others, were the speakers. But the ticket isnew. It does not fit like “ Tippecanoe and Tyler too."’ And yet the boys are in a fur better hnmor than with ‘the first announcement of the card of ’H, which was most unpromi: ngs but which, after the prettiest contest on record, was carried by the vote of New York. We consider the split between the Barnburners and the Hunkers as emphatically confirmed, as if they had sworn to eat each other like the Feejee cannibals, and that the State of New York has been passed over to the whigs, a legitimate result of the two-third rule of 1844. Whether the Barnburners, to use the expression of Mr. Turney, ‘ will go off, and highst the Tay- lor flag,” remains to be seen. The Convention did the best they could in the case. Watertoo. Bautimore, May 25, 1848. The Nominations—General _ Availability Tri- umphant—The Barnburners—Gov. Dickinson Backbiting the Barnburners and Silas Wright— Theatricals, §c. Generals Cass and Butler, a full-blooded military ticket, have been presented to the country by the great Democratic Sanhedrim for President and Vice President of the United States.— It is, undoubtedly, the strongest ticket they could have presented to catch those who vote by sound, though both are, undoubtedly, very able men. This ticket is intended as a ba- lance to Taylor or Scott, though the whigs now threaten to put one of these Generals up for Pre- sident, and Captain Bragg for Vice-President, in the confident expectation of rallying a majority of the nation under the ery of ‘a Jittle more grape,” Captain Bragg, * hese political conventions are certainly be- coming more odious and objectionable from year to year, and availability, not merit or qualitica- tions, is the only requisite to secure the nomina- tion. The Barnburners publish this morning, as an ad- vertisement in the papers, their protest against the action of the Convention, in their case, declining to accept their seats on the terms proposed. By the way, Senator Dickinson, after they had retired yesterday, made a most unmanly and bitter attack on them. Indeed, it was in sucha miserable back biting spirit, that it was listened te with patience only by the brawling fanatics of the extreme South. He was hissed and called to order several times by the more moderate members. He also at- tacked the fame and memory of the great giant of the New York democracy, Silas Wright. If his speech is fully and fairly reported in the Herald, as T have no dowbt it will be, it will crush him and his friends in the Empire State for ever. | The Convention will adjourn this morning after the erection of the grand democratic platform on which the contest is to be waged, and the next scene of excitement will be in Philadelphia. The Seguins continue to attract good houses at the Holliday street theatre, and the Mormon tem- ple (Front street theatre, under the management of Elder Addams) is doing an excellent business in the dramatic line. The Parson gives more satisfaction behind than before the scenes. Pumapetruia, May 26, 1848. Political Excitement—Incendiarism, &¢. &¢. The excitement pertaining to the Baltimore Con- vention, and the uncertaity that prevailed in re- gard to their nomination, has at last subsided, in consequence of the completion of their labors, The democracy here are in ecstasies at having out-generaled the whigs, in placing two Generals in nomination; and the Clay whigs have compara- tively elongated their visages at the thought that the martial arrray of their opponents will induce the setting aside the claims of their chan;pion, and the selection of one around whose name linger no prestiges of defeat; or, in other words, choos ing the hero who never surrenders, as the substi- tute for him who seems ever doomed to fail in the object of his ambition. The whigs have, of course, lost no time in saying bitter things of the nomi- nees. A fatile attempt was made last night to burn the lumber yard of Messrs. Dilkes and Bacon, at Eighth and Coates. The private watchman de» tected the incendiary and discharged a pistol at him, and by which it is thought he was wounded, though not so seriously as to prevent an escape. This is the fourth attempt.
