e belo: to another system. We are hkea reel of cage-born canaries, receiving through he bars of our prison only so much of the light, ‘warmth, and ant breath of heaven as our gra- | clous masters choose to permit us; and at the pre- | sent erisis of the world’s history, we may be par- ticularly compared to the same class of unfortu- | nates, as you might suppose them to feel when they wake up some fine morning, and find it to be ‘‘mo- ving day” in their master’s house. From their lofty perch they see old and familiar objects started from their positions, and tumbled about in strange confusion, which they had before supposed to be as stable as the very walls; yet, satished with the first sense of wonderment, they go on quietly picking up seed, and sipping water, as usual, out of their litle glass bottles, until their master thinks pro- per to come and remove them. | We have no idea of opening the doors, and taking advantage of the confusion to secure our liberty, even were it ever so feasible, Like the old woman’s eels, we have gotten quite used to being skinned, and only resent the rongh operation ih by an occasional squirm. Seriously, however, i the devil his due, though our most unaccountable, we are not asleep, Among our influential citi ens, almost all of whom are foreigners, the news of the recent events in Europe has caused considerable excitement and speculation. But there, in my Opinion, the matter will end. When the nine days wonder is over, they will find something else to talk about, and nothing will be heard but an occasional “carumba!” iad some open mouthed “native,” ashe listens to the accounts from the republics of France, Germany and the rest of those who are joining in the glorious march of freedom. . Nevertheless, could we quietly slags pence from the court at Madrid, to the Co: our alle- y ingress at ‘ashington, without bloodshed, oreven the. trou- ble of voting, our consent would be as unanimous as have our wishes been for years past, though we have not been so bold in their expression as our Cuban brethren. Our fatal drawback is our. la- ziness, and want of enterprise. We do not lack intelligence to know where our interest lies, but we do lack the energy necessary to make our knowledge ayailable. ‘So, the likelihood is, we shall remain for many years to come in statu quo, unless, meanwhile, we'are sunk in the ocean, by some stray earthquake, or blown from our moor- ings by an extra high pressure hurricane—a loss which would be more severely felt by the lazy aristocracy of Spain than by ourselves; for they take pretty good pains to leave us little more than our sweat for our labor, while they pocket the mn. A word about our new governor, and Iam done. You must know that a few months since we were both surprised and delighted by the arrrival of General Prim, Conde de Renz, wkom our little queen sent over to govern us in place of the old barbarian, rejoicing in the title of Conde de Mira- sol, who for some years has had the honor of hold- ing our noses to the grindstone. Every one looks forward to the happiest results from this change. as Gen. P. is a young man, of talented mind, an enlarged views, and 18 generally believed to pos- sess as much of the spirit of liberality and pro- gress as can consistently exist under a constitution and religion like that of his native country. He has already proposed some reforms, and I Hone ere long to have the pleasure of informing you that he fas swept away a few of the mig ty cobwebs which his sleepy predecessors have, from time im- memorial, suffered to accumulate about our ears. The Conde de Mirasol, whom he succeeds in of- fice, is his very reverse in character, being one of those stiff-starched old nobles of the ancien regime, whose chief aan consists in admiring their end- legs lists of hereditary and windy titles, and whose sole occupation isto try how much they can squeeze out of their poor subjects, to which end they leave no stone unturned—no legitimate means of oppres- sion untried. I will tell you more about these two characters in a future letter, and give you, also, if ‘ou Wish, a shetch of society and manners out ere, Which I assure you will be something rich and racy. Great Hai, Storm in THE Seminong Country. —Marcellus Duval, Seminole agent, arrived in this coe from the Seminole country, on Wednes- day last. From him we learn ‘that on the 26th of March last, the valley of the Canadian, about 150 miles west of this, was visited with one of the severest storm of hail that everifell—the hsil stones beingabout the size of hen’s eggs, and some even larger. Where Mr. Duval was the hail stones were not so large, he beingon a ridge, but on either side, on the river and in the prairie, the storm was terrific. | ‘ The wild geese and brants, a species of the wild goose, appeared to be on the wing that day, migrating in great numbers from south to north, and were killed by hundreds with the hail while flying. Thirty were counted in one place lying dead, by some persons who passed the spot shortly after the storm. Some fell dead in the yard of a Seminole chief named Micanopy, who picked them up, had them cooked and ate them. He told the agent afterwards he thought the Great Spirit had sent them to the Indians, knowing that they were getting short of provisions. _ 8 Some of the Indians were afraid to eat them supposing the destruction of so great a quantity of those birds portended some evil to their country. Others carried them home by horse loads. The agent says that he never heard of anything of the like before in his life, and when he left the Indians were still bringing in from the prairies wild geese and brants by horse loads. Several of the Indian cabins were blown down, and others unroofed by the storm, but fortunately no person was killed.— Fort Smith (Ark.) Herald, April 12. Re GeNERaL TAYLOR BEEORE THE REConDER.—Quite a flurry and excitement took place yesterday morn- ing in Recarder Beldwin’s court. “The room was densely crowded with all sorts of people, pushing and crowding their devious way abont, some to give bonds, others to obtain warrants, make com- plaints, &¢e. The dock was as usual decked out with individuals of every color, sex and size, wait- ing for sentence or discharge. Suddenly there was a great shuffling and stirring of feet, anxious looks and inquiring glances, when the crowd opened and gave back. In walked the noble form of the gal- lant old hero General Taylor, his benevolent face beaming with satiles as he bowed his way towards the Recorder’s desk. A general buzz of congratu- | lation and pleasure issued from the assembly as | the Recorder rose and hastened to shake him heartily by the hand. He had called upon the Re- | corder upon some private business, little expecting to meet so motley a congregation, The Recorder courteously resigned his seat to the neral, who gazed about him with surprise at the upturned eyes of the loafers in the dock before him. The countenance which had looked unblancked and with perfect calmness at the sight at Monterey, seemed flushed and dieconoetted” with the scene before him. . O. Picayune, May 13. Inreresting PHenomenon.—About 11 o’clock yesterday, the heavens presented an appearance at once novel and pleasing. ‘Two solar rainbows were vi- sible, encircling the sunst different distances. The colors of the one nearest to the sun were quite distinct and well defined and continued so for more than a half hour. ‘The secondary circle was less distinct. The primary one was perhaps 12 degrees in diameter, the outer or secondary one much greater. This celestial appearance suggests the presence in the atmosphere of an unusual quantity of aqueous vapor, and it was viewed as portentous of a coming storm, but up to the moment of our writing, there has been no important change in the wheather, excepting a dry squall about 3 o’clock P.M. COMMERCIAL AFFAIRS. MONEY MARKET. Sunday, May 21—6 P. M. Some of the fancies closed at a slight improvement in prices, but the market generally was heavy. The advance alluded to has been the result of other causes than anything connected with the money market. The reaction in Norwich and Worcester was produced by the rapidity of the previous decline; and although prices advanced during the week, they were much below the closing prices were several per cent above the lowest those current at the commencement. Harlem ranges several per cont above prices current at the same time last week, and this advance has been produced by the demand for, and the scarcity of, the stock. Within the past sixty days a very large number of shares have been taken out of the market by some of our most wealthy capitalists, and they intend holding it, as a permanent investment. The short time that the pre- ferred stock was in the market before it was all taken, and the prospects relative to the earnings and comple- tion of the road, have given the old stock a position which its most sanguine friends little anticipated. The estimates made by the new company, of carnings, showing that a dividend of at least seven per cent can Ve paid on the old stock next year, have brought eapi- talists into the market, who have absorbed a large por- tion of the floating shares. The list of subscribers to the preferred stock embraces the names of fifty- two of the wealthiest individuals and firms in this city, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey. Quite a large amount was subscribed by farmers in Westchester and Putnam counties. The largest amount taken by any individual or firm, was $150,000; some other subscriptions amounted to $100,000, $50,000, 25,000, $10,000, and so on down to $250. This shows the confidence capitalists have in this road. At the time of subscribing to the new stock, many became large purchasers of the old; and the fact that the pre- ferred stock had all been taken, raised the actual value of the old more than twenty-five per cent, and there is very little doubt but that the market value will soon xperience as great an improvement. The receipts to- day amounted to about fourteen hundred dollars. Other stocks are quiet. In the event of Harlem ad- vancing largely or rapidly, the fancies generally may improve slightly, Government and State stocks are firm at our quotations—thero is little inquiry for them; but there is no disposition to force them on the mar- ket for sale. Treasury notes have not varied a half per cent from two per cent premium for several weeks; but it is the impression in the street that there must be a slight depreciation, before the opening of bids for the now loan, on the 17th of June. The new loan will be probably taken at about one per cent premium, and it is supposed that Treasury notes will in the meantime fall to about that point. Just previous to the opening of bids for the last loan, Treasury notes fell to the point at which the loan was taken, and there is no doubt but that the same movement will take place now. The annexed table exhibits the quotations of certain stocks in this market for each day of the past week, and at the close of the week previous. According to this, the drain of bullion up to that time was principally from the banks of this city. The city banks, since that time, have drawn largely on the provincial banks; but it is doubtful if they have increased the amount on hand, as the exports from this port since March, have been more than four millions of dollars, and that is a large sum to draw from the interior.
