A Friendh morning, bet Conboy of the 6th ward, brought before the court a gen- teelly drersed man by the name of Richard W. SI wood, @ jeweller by trade, on a charge of violently as- seniting another jaweller by the name of Wm Adams, who keeps etere at 198 Chatbam street, called the Fancy Bousar. who received from the hends of Sherwood a se- vereiy bruised face, consisting of # desperate black eye, and his vpper lip, from the effect of the blows, was swollen ont roms’ two inches beyond the under, thereby disfiguring his mouth-piece in the estima- tion cf the fair sex, at least for = short time.— Jt wppears from the evidence illicited before the magis- trate, that the two parties, Adams ond Sherwood, were bosom friends, and would fe remained se until now, had it not been for Adams meking himself too familiar with Mrs, Sherwood. It seems from Mr. Sherwood’s statement that he has been married between three and four years; his wife’s maiden name was Margaret Ann Hunt, and about two years since, rome diffloulty occur- rei between himself and wife,by which the wife obtained a divorce, Sherwood was absent from the city at the time, and on hia return, a year ago last April, a reconciliation took place between self and wife, and they have since lived together. ‘Chis last winter, however, Sher- ‘wood was taken sick, and confined to bis bed, and while thus tick, was visited slmost daily by his bosom friend, Mr. Adama, who paid him all the attention necessary, or could be expected from intimate friends. Mra. Sher- wood, in consequence of her husband’s sickness, was much confined to the house, and im order to her some fresh air, Jw little relief. Sherwood invited Adams to escort Mrs. 8. out for @ short walk ; promenading a little in Broadway, taking oysters, or a plate of tmelia, asthe case may be, returcing much refreshed end pleated with the trip Thos matters went on from week to week, Mr Adwms still making his daliy calis, and paying the accustomed politeness to Mrs 8, unti Mr. Sherwocd hed recovered from hi end, terling dispored to tske charge own cha‘ecu, avd manage his household affairs his own way, requested bis friend, Adame, not to escort his wife about any more, asit might osuse seme trouble between them. This pessed on,an usual. but still Mre S. was frequently abeent a long time during the afternoon and evebing, and suspicion at once flashed upon the mind of Sherwood, that a correspondence wes going on between his wife and Mr, Adams, and in order to satisfy bis anxious coubts, he watched some of the movements going on, and on Monday last he met Mr. Adems and hin wife together in Broadway, near the conrer ot How- ard street. He then cautioned Adams, and ear forbid his intimscy with his wife, stating that if be per: risted in such conduct, they would certainly come to blows, This passed on as -usual, when, on Wednesday Mrs. S left the house about four o'clock in the afternoon, saying to her husbend that she was going to purchate some aprons for their little boy. This wae all vecy well—-6 o'clock came, no wife~7 o’olsck came, no wife—8 o’olock, no wife. Sherwood then went to the store of Adams snd found he wan abwent aleo. 90’clock came, no wife— 10 o’cleck, no wife beth together, and feeling determin: effair at once focus, seated himself on the cart at ths corner of Duane and Chatham stree! poring they would come along in that di sided in ‘illiam street; and sure right, for batween 11 and 12 o’clook, along S. eecorted by Mr. Adams, when Sherwood met them full face to face, and said “Well, Billy, { have warned you frequently agsinst going with my wife, and now we come to blows; and bo sooner was the words utlered, than ot it they went, like two dogs, Sherwood getting the first blow, obtained the advant nd punished Adams as above described. The police was called, and both mveyed to the Station house, and Sherwood was d to answer for theas a the other hand, Mr. Adams explained tothe magia at Mr, Sherwood hed frequently invited him to take out his wile for & litte resh alr, and last evening, as he was passing down Broxdwey, he saw Mrs. 8. come out of jand a3 the hour was late, he offered his serviors to escort her bome. The magistrate said thet the case was unfortu- nate for both parties, andthe best way would be for Mr Adams to refrain from escorting Mrs. 8., as the like acts would sutject him to the like assaults from the hus- bend. Mr &. said all he wanted was for Adame to quit visitiog his wife. The magistrate took the complaint of Adams sgainst Sherwood for the assault, and Justice Drinker held him to bail in the sum of $200 to answer the charge; and thus ths matter terminated for the pre- font. Indecent Assauit.—A Frenchman by the name of Eu- gene Deriou, residing at No. 191 Broadway, was arrested yesterdey by officer Crosett, on a charge of committing €n indecent ateault upon # arrvant gitl in bis Coalbed by the name of Margaret Bishop, only thirteen years 0! age. The last annual report of the Morris Cans] and Bank. ing Compeny, of 1844, gives the stockholders some hopes of ultimately realizing something upon their invest- ments. The income for 1847 was not so large as antict- pated, but it exbibits a handsome increase on that ofthe previous year. The capacity of the canal previous to 1840, was too limited to enable it to compete successful. ly with the Delaware division of the Pennsylvania Ca- nal, whioh was aad now is a competitor forthe tradeof the Lehigh valley. In 1840 and 1941, the lift locks wore en- larged to their present dimensions, and immediately af- ter, the company failed. By # deoree of the Chancellor, its effecta were put into the hands of receivers, by whom the canal was leased for a small annual rent, until the close of the season of 1844. In October, 1844, the canal, its appendages, and ell the chartered rights of the company, were sold by virtue of ® certain mertgage, under a deoree of the Court of Chancery of the State of New Jersey. Soon after the sale, the purchasers and their asroci- ates, by and with the sdvice of counsel, re-orgenised the company under the name of “The Morris Canal an! Banking Company of 1844,” distributed the stock into shares, and issued sorip to the full amount authorized by the charter. The company, as then organized, com menced the improvement cf its oaval, early in the ses- ton of 1845, with the intention of making it in every re- pect as good an avenus for the trade ef the Leh'gh val- ley as its competitor, the Delaware division of the Penn- sylvania canals. ‘The season of 1645, being an unusually dry one, and the waters from the reservoir having been used for manufacturing purposes without restriction, during all season, including the previous winter and spring, it had become nearly exhsusted when the canal was ready tobe filled; the consequence was, that very little business could be done until near the close of the season, for the want of water. From what has been stated, it will be observed that the improvements contemplated, were still incomplete at the olose of 1845. The work connected with tho en- largement between Jersey City and Newark, was unf- nished; on considerable portions of the line west of Newark, the banks had not been raised high enough to hold more than four feet of water. Of thetwenty-three old planes, only two had been rebuilt. The Pompton aqueduct was unfinished; an additional reservoir was to be made at Stanhope, and others to be enlarged and im- Proved; considerable repairs were to be made in tho locks; new bridges to be built, also a new bulk head at, and deepening the channel across, the Delaware river. One hundred new section boats had been purchased and placed on the canal, of sufficient capacity to carry from 60 to 65 tons each; but they could not be passed over the old planes when loaded with over 50 tons. They were therefore comparatively useless beyond that capaci'y At the commencement of the season of 1846, the com- dany owned 108 boats, with which the business of thet season was carried on, At the organisation of the com- pany, in April last, it was stated as desirable that an effort should be made to improve the inclined planes, so that they would be competent to pass both sections of a boat loaded with 60 er 65 tons, as rapidly as they could be passed through a lift lock. This, however, did not re- ceive that attention necessary to the success of the work, and the company turned its attention to proour- ing an additional number of bouts to run on the canal | The difficulties experienced in getting boatmen owning boats to place them on this work, induced the com- pany to provide itself with facilities, and during the months of May and June more than soventy were purchased and contracted for. Of the number, 64 were delivered; and the revenue derived from them in tolls and boat rent amounted to about halfthe sum paid for them. In January, 1943, the new inclined plane was completed; and it appears by experiments made upon it, that boats containing 70 tona of cargo were easily passed up and down at the rate of more than three miles an hour, which is faster than boats are towed on the level. The cost of this improvement was $27,168 33. Twice the amount of the company’s 6 per cent bonds have been deposited with these notes, as Collateral security for their payment when due. The funds have been provided to pay the interest due in April, and for repairs in ths canal preparatory to it® being opened. Thero is fair prospect of a great increase in the business ofthe present season, and it is hoped thay the loeses in the transportation account of the past three years will be at least made up, eo that the company can start fair another year. The excess of transporte: tion expenses and interest on debt over receipts, is $41,843 80 To make up the deffelency in this amount, the incom: for 1848 must exceed one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. The annexed statemen, exhibits the deficiency each year: Ia 1845 the deficit was. In 1446 = 31,922 74 Ia 1847 * ba 8,581 19 Total... tee eee 5 6 $41,848 80 Excluding the season of 1845, during which the oana wes navigable but fora short time, the business of the two subsequant seasons may be usefully compered, to show that the results of neither should be taken as en indication of what the canal is capable of doing, even in its present unfinished condition, if adequately fur- nished with boets. The trade of 1846 was carried on in the 108 boats be- longing to the company, and the “flickers” before refer redto. From the business of that year there appears to have been a deficit to pay expenses and interest, of $31,922 74. The trade of 1847 wos commenced with the seme num- ber of boats, but during the season, 64 others were pur- chased and run equal to about haif'the season; and the deficit to pay the expe: ind interest was reduced to $9,881 19, thus showing @ difference im favor of 1847 of $23,041 65, about balf of which sum was produced by the 64 boats purchased, and the balance by an imoreas- ed activity of the others, The canal being in better order, the boats were subject to less detention than the year before. Sinco the close of lest season, arrangements have been made by which ebout 6@other scow boats sre to run on the canal daring the next season, so that besides the boats engaged im the local trade slong the line, there will be more than twiee a¢ many running from the commencement of the next season, as there wers from the commencement of the preceding one.
