MONEY MARKET, ‘Wednesday, May 36 P.M. The stock marketfopened heavy this morning, and prices fell off @ little. At the second board there were moderate sales at a slight decline on prices current in the morning. The Chancellor of New Jersey has granted a rule al- lowing thirty days for exceptions to be taken by those interested, if any they have, to allowance of the acoounts of the receivers ofthe Plainfield Bank, made by the mas- ters, of their compensation, and the demands against said bank presented to and allowed by them. There ere parties interested inthe and of course a ruinous contraction. The movement of large masces*of specie from one country to enother is always attended with vast deal of derangement te commercial effairs, and invariably checks the prosperity of both the giver and the receiver. In 1847, we imported from foreign countries, principal Jy from Great Britain, about twenty-four millions of dol- lars in gold and silver. The extraction of such a vast amount of specie from the currency of Englandhad a ten dency to depreciate prices for ry species of property. except that which the precious metals were required to pay for; and as seon as the deficiency in ths supply of breadstuffs became satisfied, and the drain of bullion ceased, the exportation of British manufactures beoume 60 great thatthe markets which had drawn the bulk of specie were soon flooced with goods. The currency of this country had become so much inflated by the acces. sion of specie, that prices for overy thing advanced ra pidly, and the consumption became very great. Thi: hed @ favorable influence upon the commerc'a' classes, until the imports of merchandise had reached such an extent that our exports could not pay for them, and a portion of the specie we had received a few months previous was required to liquidate balances. Then s contraction of the currency commenced, prices for our staple productions rapidiyjdepraciated, while foreign fab rios were! thrown into our markets in immense quanti- ties, continually increasing the balance egainst us, and inoreasing the demand fer bullion for shipment. The effect of a drain of a few millions of specie from our markets was as great and as disastrous as the drain of twenty to thirty millions from England; ‘and it is a question if in the course of another year th, effect will not be more ruinous to this country than to Great Britain, Whatever affects the commercial prospe- rity of England, operates with at least equal force upon this country, and we are made to bear the brunt of most of the losses growing out of mercantile disasters. This fact is pretty conclusively iliustrated by the present prices for our great exporting staple—cotton—in the mar over England and the Continent last fall, and the depres! sion that revulsion produces in the manufacturing inte. point lower than had before been known for years this country as the cause was to the principal interests of England, and we have been serious sufferers by it While the importation of specie into the United States was advanolng prices for foreign manufactures in our mar_ kets, it was depreciating prices for our cotton in foreign markets, so that we wore injured in two ways by what prosperity, vis, an importation of specie. The sale was adjourned to Wednesday, the 17th instant. ‘There was a ridiculous rumor afloat to-day relative to the banks of Charleston, 8.C., for which there is not the slightest foundation. It originated, no doubt, in the brain of some bear speculator, and was not generally credited. The annexed statement exhibits the value of foreign ‘and domestic produce exported from this port for the month of April, distinguishing the extent of shipments to each country :— Commence or THe Pont or New Yorx—Arait, 1843, Goods not Goods en- Destination. The aggregate ex- port of merchandise he been limited, compared with that for the same montn sast year; butthe shipments of specie have been unusually lergo, swelling the total to an amount corresponding very nearly with that for April, 1847, Tho value of exports from this port in the month of April, in each of the past three years, was as an- nexed:— Commence or tHe Port oy New Yonn—Vatcr oF Exronts, 1846 17. 184 890 3,939,674 297 39 73,958 1,180. p91 79 84.007 298 9,758 251 ie 440,815 13,723 586 7,190, 947 ‘wo961 over Nensotievere se: $3,092,336 9 716,204 3,322,696 This table exhibits some extraordinary results, most of whioh are decidedly satisfactory. The falling off in the imports for the month amounted to $6,642,579, about one-half of which in merchandise, and the balance in specie. The excess of imports over exports im April, 1948, compared with the same month in 1847, shows a reduction of $6,393,598. This great reduction in the balance agaiast us on the trade of this port, ig enoouraging, and in the event of its continuing in the fame proportion fora time, we shall soon become the creditors of the world again. It is highly probable that the aggregate value of the exports for the month this year would have been equs to the same month in 1947, had it not been for the inter ruption in our trade with France and the Continent generally. The movement in specie this sesson has Deon very different to what it was lest In April 1847, the amount of specie imported was $3,307,064, and the exports im April, 1848, were $1,190,422, making @ Aifference in this port alone of $4,577,186. Instead of paying for our imports in merchandise, we have this season paid for a good part of them in epecie. We have shipped from this port, since the Ist of January last, more then four millions of dollars in specie, while for the same period last year the imports amounted to $6:052618 This makes ® vast difference to the com- moroial classes of this country, and cannot but bave a very materiel influence upon the currency. An im- portation of specie pro t once an inflation of the paper currency, and all the concomitant evils of # sudden expansion of credits; end an exportation of the specie that osused this unnatural state of things, within ® period of twelve months, creates a sudden reaction, 2 do 31! 3 Houamtgut Buew sk 9% ic Ruew 50 Har Hi a4 693 do 33) 50 Nor& WorRR 615 33! 35 do 33 200 do bse i: By 50 y 330 33 100 Long Island RR 28% 750 do zg oe ar 10 = do be 3 100 = do 360 29: 450 do 29; Bote 8 ‘90 Harlem RR 1500 do. 52) 150 do ED 150 do 030 0 do stoopg 52) rs he Board. 10000 ‘Treas oteg 102) S50shs Harlem RR 510 52 . 4000 It Fundable bonds a 130 do ope 53 3000 Neading 50 Reading RR. 33) do mduly Sai9 160 pitnd RR do 75 Nor k Wor 33) Jog oh Higclem BR Fi 25 Canton Co 32 7” 2 ope BR 50 Long Island RR 2% a CITY TRADE REPORT, New Yorn, Wednesday Afternoon, May 8, 1848.
