General Shields (marked 2) and etafl. The wounded officer, (marked 3); is the brave Lieut. Colonel Baxter; and the one marked 4 is the gallant Capt. Van Olinda. ‘The storming of the fortification of Chapultepec, was one of the greatest achievementss of the tremendous struggles of eur gallant army in the-Valley of Mexico. Those on the right are the South Carolinians, Pennsylvanians, and Marines. View of the West e Mountain Perote._ of Jalapa with th } battalion, on these wide and extended plains, ia not altogether devoid of little incidents, which serve to amuse and enliven our dreary and mo- notonous life. The most prominent, and, at present, all-exciting circumstance which oceu- pies our more immediate attention, is a dis- covery of rather a delicate and unsoldier oceur- rence. For some time past, surmises have been afloat, and pointed allusions directed towards one of our youthful heroes—whose physiognomy conveyed strong indications that the field of warfare was not exacily the proper sphere for features so delicate and a form go fragile. On the 28th of November, a return train left this place for Fort Leavenworth, and during the evening, the observed of all observers was amon: the missing. An immediate investiga- tion, of se, followed, and the result did a tale unfold, savoring of the romantic, love, and glory. A detail was sent after the absent youth, whom they brought back to the Fort, when a complete expose took place; and it was placed beyond a doubt, that this individual was actually afemale, who had leit the amorous field ef fe- male conquests, donned the soldier’s garb, and eought for honor in the field of glory. TI cannot exactly understand that this metamorphosis had originated froma tender passion for an Adonia ; but rather a predisposition to intrigue, which was concocted, «nd carried into effect, under the auspices of a dandy lieutenant, belonging to Company D. This officer had, I understand made several attempts to obtain a distinguished position in the service of Uncle Sam, and when this battalion was put under requisition, he snobbed himself among the commissioned of- ficers ; but | suppose bis amorous dispositions were almost likely to supplant the chivalrous, until—being a man fertile in expedients-—he so managed that ke was enabled to prevent even his amours from interfering with his movements in the path of glory. Prior to his departure from St. Louis, he had fixed his attention on a blue- eyed nymph ; so, by whispering sott and sweet accents into a willing and attentive ear, and, by a. well-turned, flactering tale, he induced the frail Caroline to, doff the female garb and don the soldier’s uniform {tis worthy of remark, that this devotee, both of, Mars and of Venus, had actually introduced this female heroine under his paternal roof at St. Louis, in her own proper garb, and there the transformation took place, and the initiatory pro- bation of assuming manhood, or man-like form, was first adopted. This feminine companion was ultimately brought on to Fort Leavenworth in the eapacity of a personal servant to this hero of adouble passion, when the embryo company to which he belonged, being destitute of one man to make up the requisite complement for muster in service, the pliable and serviceable Caroline was appealed to, and, with a becoming compliance, again extricated the lieutenant. The examination before a surgeon was certainly abarrier, but this, by a cunning manqwuvre, the amorous swain managed to avoid. Truth and justice compel me to state, the movements were done without the cognizance ot any other of- ficer of the battalion, excepting the brother ot our hero, who was also a lieutenant in the sume company. This hero had made himself rather conspicuous during the march; for, so determined was he to obtain distinction and renown, both in love and glory, that he actually shot himself in the leg; which circumstance he made available, and penned a feeling letter to his affectionate and loving daddy, in filling up which, as I understand, he drew largely on his imaginatien for the accidental ball from his own piece, which he, by a trick of legerdemain, prr- verted into the effects of adreadtul rencontre with the savege red skins. The wound, however, ren- dered hit unfit tor duty, afid gave him ample opportunity for indulging in his amorous avoca- tions—this female volunteer being his bed-fe\- low, with few to interrupt them, and none to i ju. The Lieutenant and his brother were put un- der immediate arrest, and the frail one has be- come their bitterest foe.
