THE LATEST INTELLIGENCE MALLS RECEIVED LAST MIGHT. ea Wasniveron, Deo. 26, 1547, Christmas—Commodere De Kay—Dr. Baldw Christmas having devn'celebrated here in a snow storm, ‘St passed off with an unusual degree of order and quietness. ‘The disorderlies who had doubtless premeditated “ flour- ishing round,” disturbing the peace of the eity, and de- fying the auxiliary guard, were thus put under a rigid Dicekade; for it appears to bes providential arrange- ment, that these hombres vulgus never have the money to pay for horseflesh, so that if the weather will not ad- mit ofan excursion on foot, they are, per necessitate subjected to the restrictions of an embargo. The peace- ‘ably disposed citizens thus escape @ nuisance, which at other times defies all reason, except th big stick a 9 tain Goddard, who, to his credit be it spok to apply it tothe refractory leperoes, wherever i may estoh them, ‘The defence of Commodore De Kay, in reference to the cold iron brought over in the Macedonian, is ample aod conelusive. The charge of a collusion to defraud the treasury, was aimed blow at Mr. Walker, and Mf perty malevolence can reach him, it matters little what ot jeot or what man is defrauded of justice. We have but little to add to the account which we gave on Friday evening, of the death (and the oircum- stances attending it) of the lete Senator, John Fairfield, ot Ma His family are at their home in the North. A com- mittee of the Senate fare making preparations for the faceral. His death will be announced to-morrow in both houses, aud on Tuesday the funeral sermon will be preached ia the Senate, previous to the removal of the remains of deceased to the Congressional cemetery. A certifica’e of a post mortem examination of the body of deceased bas been sigued by witnesses present. Wesup- pose that Dr. Magruder will also publish a statement of the symptoms, aud of the operation which he made, and of the stringrnt solution which he applied to the wound, and whether its effects were efficacious or otherwi ‘The necessity of the case would seem torequire it, vindication of his high professional reputation. ‘Woe shall, perhaps, have a full statement of the case in the Intelligencer to-morrow morning. Meeting of the Legislature— Christmas Weather and Ice— Th: Arts Union—The Opera, $c. ‘Tho legislature of Maryland convenes at Auapolis to- Any, being the first of our bienpial sessions, and a goodly number of our citizens have repaired to the ancient me- tropolis, to witness the assemblage of the congregated wisdom of the old commonwealth, We have had genuine Christmas weather, and ice house stock is rapidly improving. ‘There {s ice in abun- dance, from three to four inches thick, and the cutters have already gone to work. For several years past, we | bave been compelled to depend on the east for a large portion of our supplies of this necessary article. Should the present weather continuo a week longer, a good stock will be secured. Christmas was « most rolicking and frolicking day in Baltimore We bad acontinnal fall of snow, which kept the ladies in doors, but the male portion of creation filled the streets, and towards evening the merry sleigh bell resounded throughout the city. it was, however, 4 mat- ter of general regret and surprise to observe so many young lads in a beastly state of intoxication. Kelly, the unfortunate keeper of the elephant Colum- bus, who was so dreadfully injured by that animal, in » moment of irritation, caused by his giving bim a blow, died on Saturday morning, and was buried yesterday ‘The slave case was up before Judge Kelly again this morning, who stated that there was not that conflict of jarisdiction between the State tribunal and the U.S Couct that at first appeared, and the fugitive being now in the custody of the authorities of the United States, he would dismiss the writ that brought the case before ad the saoerior tribunal will, therefore, have the entire contro] of the case. The course pursued by the abolitionists has consequently placed the alleged fugitive where full justice will be done to the master, if the proof ot his being @ slave is fall and ample.
