The necessity cf bridging the Con- necticut, in building this road, has been raised as a great objection to the line in every shape, and there is certainly a strong argument in this againstits construction. It is very natural for the people inhabitinga sectionof coun- try not provided with a railroad, to desire one, and if pos- sible construct ene; but it does not follow that such a road will be productive. An air line road between this city and Boston would answer very well, if there was any great saving in distance, compared with the routes already constructed and in active operation; but ac cording to the surveys made, the direct‘line would be only about twenty miles nearer, and the time saved only about half an hour. The cost of the road from New Haven to the eastern line of Cennecticut, will be about two and a half million of dollars, and from the eastern line of the State: to Boston, as much more, making an aggregate expenditure of about five millions cf dollars, for the construction of & road through a section of country by no mennsable to support the line, and de- pending upon a large amcunt of through travel for suffl- cient revenue to make expenses.
