Charge of Stealing a Watch —Officer Crosett, of the lower police, arrested yesterday a young man name of Alonzo G Perkins, on a charge of steall s gold watch and fob chain, valued at $120, the property of Thomas Heyer, of No. 50 Bowery. it appears that aman by the name of Matthew Tolaton, alles the Che- rokee Chief, was gaming with Dutch Charley, on Friday night, and Charley having a “streak” of luck, won from Holston near $250, the greater part of which sum Tom Heyer loaned Holston to play with, and he, in erder to secure Heyer, gave him draft on a firm in Phila- delphia fore 250 dollars, which draft subsequently roved to be worthloss; the same night, however, being roke, and still wishing to keep =p his appearance, Hol- ston borrowed Heyer's gold watch and chain,in order to pass amongst his friends as usual. ‘l'o this Tom consent- ed, and banded over his “thimble,” supposing all to beright. Verkins and Holston met at Florence's, when, after supper they proceeded to No. Leonard street, and finished the balance of the night; and it was at this house that Perkins is alleged to have extracted the watch from the pocket of Holston, from the fact of Perkins heving been seen with tne watch and chain in his possession. This chain Mr. Heyer identified os his property, having been attached to the watch when taken by Holston.— Perkins denied 'all knowledge of the wateh and chain. but Justice Drinker thought otherwise, and held him to bail in the sum of $500 to answer the charge, in default of which he was locked up in the Tombs. Holston was in trouble likewise, as he was taken to Aibany last night by officer Upton, on « warrant issued by Justiee C of that city, wherein he stands charged with having ob- tained some clothing worth about $20, belonging to Silas R. Howe, of that city. Robbed on the Five Points,—Offloer R, Rafferty of the 6th ward, arrested yesterday morning a black man call- ed Benj. ("rom the Leeds (Eng) Mercury, Osta} ‘The United States general has at length fought bis way to the gates of Mexico, and gained « bloody victory over the army which the Mexicans had drawn together to defend their capital. According to the secounts brought by the Caledonia, General Scott arrived within four or tive miles of the city of Mexico on the 18th of August. Santa Anna hed made immense exertions to fortify the city, and had collected an army which the in- vaders estimate at thirty-two thousand men. On the 19th the Americans attacked the strong works in ad- vance of the city, and after a se atruggl of several hours were compelled to retire. But on the morning of the 20th, before Genera) Scott was in motion, General Smith, with « division of the United States army, at- tacked the works at Contreras, defended by the Mexioan rtifications, and inflicted 4 very heavy loss on the Mexicans in killed, wounded, and prisoners. This success was followed up by an as- sault with the rest of the Americrn army on the still stronger defences of San Antonio, at Churubusco; and these, where Santa Anna commanded in persen, — carried at the point of the bayonet, after « conflict of two hours. The Americans estimate their own loss in killed and wounded at less than # thousand, and that of the Mexicans at five thousand, includ: many generals and distinguished civilians. ‘According to the svine authorities, the army of General Scott num- bered only 7,000 men, whilst that of Santa Anna amo ed to 32,000, Making reasonable deductions from these accounts, itis evident that great valor, enterprise, perseverance, and military skill must have been displayed on the side of the United States army, who have penetrated through & hontile territory to the capital, defeated very superior numbers, carried most formidable batteries, and estab- lished themselves in @ position to command the city of Mexico. Whilst we can but deplore the badness of their cause, it must be admitted that the military con- duct of the American officers and the bravery ef their men may be compared with the achievements of the veteran troops of any European Si when it is considered that the Ameri newly raised, and that their Generals paratively little experience in war, we apprehend any military man of candor would award them the higheat credit for skill and daring courage, both in the field and in the attack of fortifications, There cannot be & doubt that the military resources of the United States will have risen exceedingly in the opinion of the world by the events of this war, notwithstanding the unfounded and jvjadicious ridicule which several of our daily papers chrow on them, Un the other side, the Mexicans have defended thelr country and their capital with valor and resolute perse- verance. Several of the engagements have been obsti- nately contested. Greatly inferior in the quality of their materiel as well ag in the physical energy and disol- pline of their troops, and even more unaccustomed than their invaders to war, they have given away before smaller numbers, but not till the fleld of conflict hes been covered with their slain, Samta Anne has done wonders in collecting army after army, amidst so much political disorganization and financial’ embarrassment ; and he seems to have secomplished all that could be accomplished with the materials he . The obstinacy of the Mexicans has prolonged the war much beyond the expectations of the Government of the United States, who will pay dearly in blood and trea- sure for whatever territory they may obtain by this unjust invasion Lhe result of the victory of General Scott in sight of the Mexican capital was to lead to the conclusion of an armistice, for the purpose of negotiating a treaty of peace. [t is remarkable that the American general agreed to remain outside the city during the negotiation an agreement which can hardly be ascribed to for- bearance, and which some of our English writers inter- pret as showing apprebension of the result of another struggle, in the atreets of Mexico. Perhaps Gen, Soot was will ng to spare the capital, as one of the induce- meats to the Mexican Congress to make peace on favor- able terms, ‘The armistice, however, is one that evin ces courage aud dignity on the part of the Mexican leaders; for it stipulates not only that Seott shall ter the city, but that the Mexican Congress shall be convened to determine on the treaty, and that neither army shall, in the meantime, receive reinforcements, It is impossible to foretell the decision of the Congress, in- semuch as Gen. Valencia has quitted Sante Anns with 4 body of troops, and declared against negotiating with the enemy, and the general feeling of the people is one of the strongest resentment against their invaders fore the late battle it was supposed that the Mexican: would give up their cavital, and continue « desultory war against the in Should’ they do 80, General Scott, with his small army, would be in considerable danger, unless very large reinforcements should be sent to him. It would seem, however, as if both Santa Anna and Herrera, the former President, were favorable to Peace ‘The steamship m, Capt. | chartered by the government, and in ® few dayr will proceed to Mobile, to take troops from that port to Vera Crus ‘The steamer Fashion, Capt.
