There was s small panic in the street to-day,and the decline became general. At the first board Long Island fell off 4 per cent; Harlem, }<; Nor- wich and Worcester, }¢; Canton, 3(; Reading Railroad, 1; Pennsylvania 5's ‘4; Illinois 6’s, 4; Indians 5’s. 1 Farmers’ Loanand Treasury Notes closed at prices our- rent yesterday. The transactions at the decline were not very large, and there appei to be no disposi- tlon to force stocks upon the market at present prices. Many holders are under the impression hat prices may go down, but as the decline would only be bastened and carried to # greater extent by filling the market with stoch, they prefer holding on, and patient- ly wait for an improvement. At the second board prices rallied a little. Harlem advanced 3 per cent; Norwich and Worcester 34; Read- ing, 94; Farmers’ Loan, 3¢; Long Ieland, 49. The demand for exchange for remittance by the French steamer has been limited. The Missourl takes out a considerable amount of silver in five franco pieces. Domestic exchanges remain without any material al- teration, aod rates cannot be considered otherwise than nomiosl It will be perceived that the balances on our domestic trade are generally in our favor. Uncurrent money is very abundant, and the brokers ju the street have as much offered for redemption as they can conveniently take care of, and the rates continue steady at our quotations, With the exception of a moderate movement in | five frane pieces for shipment by the French steamer Missouri, there is nothing of consequence doing in the Precious metals, The small amounta passing to andfrom Europe by the steamers are nothing unusual; these movements are continually going on, and have nothing to do withjthe regulation of exchanges. ‘The damages to the public works of Pennsylvania from the recent freshets, have been very great, and happening at this season of the year, exceedingly unfortunate, The Juniata Canal ts ewept from Hollidaysburg to Dancen's Island, and its embankments washed away in numerous places, Every bridge over the Juniata is carried away, and the new acqueduct above Newton Hamilton, rebuilt about two yearseince. In some places, it is said that the caval is almost obliterated, and the damage such that ft cannot bo repaired this season. The Susquehanna division is not so seriously damaged, although there are several heavy breaches at Duncan’s Island and above it, that wiil r-quire sometime to repair. The lat- ter funotionary becoming incensed st the high-handed outrage, authorised the rancheros to make war upon the rebbers. Accordingly, a company of ranoheros was or- ganised, under the command of Macedonia Capestran, who went in pursuit of the brigand chief Casnero, who had been for «long time the terror of the country. The two parties met in a road, where Casnero gave battle from behind a breastwork formed from the packs of his mules. After most desperate fight, nine of the robbers were killed, and the remainder fled to a chaparal near at hand. Capestran and his party were still in pursuit of the robbers when our informant left. It was supposed, however, that none would escape. The Picayune learns that «letter entitled to credit, has been received at New Orleans from an officer at Matamoras, stating that Col.
