The bill to abolish the office of county superintendent of common schools, was reported, with amendments, and ordered to # third reading. ‘Thw Senate, in committee, took up the bill for par de- demy@§on in Now York and Albany. The motion to strike out the word “Albany,” was agreed to by a vote of6ta,5 The preposition to compel par redemption was ,d to, 8 to 7—not aquorum. The seotion im- posing a fine of one thousand dollars for the issue of n tes at apy other than the place where bank is actu- ally located, was negatived. An amendment, requiring statement by banking companies, in regard to the place where their notes are issued and whether at their nominal place of business, and notes issued at any other place to be redeemed at par in New York, was agreed to. The committee then reported the bill to the Senate The question on agreeing with the report of the com- mitte was deferred. Mr. Beers laid on the table a concurrent resolution, for a recess from Ootober 28 to November 4, - Assematy. In the House, the greater part of the session was con- sumed in the discussion, in committee, of a bill to ex- empt the homestead from salo on execution, except on the joint application of husband and wife. The bill was not disposed of. The bill to reduce the rate of interest was also under discussion. —EEEE BY THE MAILS Wasninaron, Oct. 18,91847, Yea and Coffee. We have reason to beliove tiat Mr. Walker will re new at the cotning session, his tariff, propositions of the last session, a 20 per cent tax on tea and coffee, and a small advance on Pennsylvania iron. Wé6 shall havo an aggregate debt, from all sources, in- herited and contracted, of $50,000,000 at the meeting of Congress. The Treasury must be sustained, and in addition to the tea and coffee and cold fron, sugars, &e , Mr. Walker muy fail back upon his old_plan of a direct tax on gold and silver ware. JOANN Es. PHILADELPUIA, ( Oct. 20, 1847. The only item of interest with us to-day has been the proceedings in the Saturday Courier affair. The order of the court having fixed 12 o’clock for the sale, as soon as the court opened this morning Mr. MoMackin’s law- yer commeneed a series of attempts to stave off the sale. They presented a notice, which was intended to be read before the sale was commenced, denying the right of Mrs, Holden to any interest in the good will of the es- tablishment, protesting against the validity of apy sale made under the circumstances, and declaring that the sale would be contested by appealing to the Supreme Court, This notice was exhibited to all the Judges in turn, for the purpose of ascertaining whether its being read would be considered a contempt of court; but the applicants were not satisfied, the Judges deeming it rather an extraordinary application.— They were told it was not oustomary for a oourt ent upon an offence before it The counsel for.MoMackin had obtained a writ rtiorari in an lar manner, having been procured from the clerk of the Supreme Court’ upon bail which had been offered in the lows court the previous day, while the application for an ap- uite a complication of motions, and other legal quibbles ensued, which it would puzzle a Philadelphia lawyer to connected history of, but the conclusion of the a! was that MoMackin carried his point and the ssle was postponed. He is to give $30,000 seourity to conduct the paper as usual, and to do nothing to cause @ deterioration in ite value while questions involved in the deci- sions in the Court of Common Pleas aro carried up to the Supreme Court on sppeal, and that if a sale is tually decreed, the condition uf the Cry te that her share shall not be sold for less than $30, ‘The re- quired bail is to be given before noon to-morrow, other- wise the sale will then take place. The public are dee} ly interested in this case, snd the rotunda of the change was crow: with persons curious to witness the sale, including all the publishers and magnates of the press. The unexpected decision of the court completely astounded those assembled. I foar thet it will be disas- trous to the cause of Sirs.
