In consequence of the celebration to day of laying the corner stone of the Washington Monument, neither of the boards of brokers were in session, and we are there- fore without our usual sales of stocks. The effect of the European news upon the stock market did not appear, and we shall have to wait the meeting of the boards to- morrow—Wednesdsy—for further developments, ‘The news from England, commercially, is exceedingly important, and so far as the failures are concerned, much more unfavorable than was generally anticipated, but not so much so as would have been the case had we been more intimately connected with these houses. The heaviest failures among those reported, were concerned in the East India trade, and many of them are in no way connected with this country. We shall consequently escape in a great degree these disasters, which a different state of things would have created. ‘The Citizens’ Insurance Company of St. Louis have declared a semi-annual dividend of twenty per cent. The value of merchandise exported from Boston to foreign ports, for the week ending Oct. 16th, was $238,792, of which $140,361 was in domestic products, $23,867 in foreign products, and $74,574 in specie. ‘The Georgia Railroad Company have declared a diviz dend of three per cent from the profits of the past six months. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the condition of each |’ of the banksin New Hampshire, on the first Monday of September, 1847, compared with previous returns :— Banxs or New Hamrsuire. There appears to have been a steady ex- pansion in the banking movement of all the New England ‘States, but we do not look upon this increase as being illgitimate in the slightest de- gree. Within the past five years, there has been a wonderful increase in every branch of industry in New England, and there has, consequently, been a greater de- mand for banking facilities, which the banks have in a measure supplied Wemuch rather see this gradual, but steady. increase, than those fluctuations which have heretofore been so sudden and ro frequent. So long as the incresde in banking capital keeps pace with the in, Crease in trade and commerce, there will be very little danger of running into extremes—very little to fear from an over inflation of credits. = The semi-anousl report of the Mchanics’ Bank of Augusta, Ga , of the first Monday in October, 1847, pre- sents the annexed statement of its condition :— Mecuanics’ Bank or Avcusta, Geo. $500.00 665 569 164 985 Resulting balance with agencies. This decrease has been confined almost entirely to the circulation, there having been a reduction in that department of $476,550 within the pastsix months. The fluctuations which have taken Place in the circulation of this bank within the eighteen monthg, have been enormous. We cannot account for the rapid increase and decrease, as we donot understand the necessity for such tremendous changes in such an important department of any banking institution. They are ruinous to those engaged in commercial pur- suite, and a bank properly conducted would not exhibit such expansions and contractions, The discounted Paper of the above bank, not considered good, on the first Monday of October, 1947, compared with Apri! last, is ranked as follows :— April, 1847. 4 otes discounted running to maturity $323,099 beet 5 which is considered doubtfu . airs ib aid notes under protest, Ae ia vine over, uot ‘wider Bro: B 4546 4,046 nd 19'382 16,873 afi 29,419 20,339 befal 12,931 - This shows a moderate im ‘provement in the value of paptomeng Paper of the bank, since the last semi- The amount received for tolls at Buffalo, Rochester, and Oswego, during the second wook in October, in the years 1845, 46, and °47, is as follows :— 1947, 32118 44 8,650 85 Totals... ....4.- 99149554 9841798 «= 99 7 ‘The woekly receipts from tolls during the remainder of the season for navigation will be very large The ad- ‘vance in prices for breadatuffs in the seaboard markets of this country and in Englan will induce many pro- bushel, which was not conceded by purchasers. John Grasey, the young man accused of robbing the office of Mr. Hutton, of securities to the value of about $10,000, and returning them through the hands of Priest Hickey, was yesterday honorably acquitted by the court, The Rey, Mr. Hickey testified chat he had re- ceived the papers through the confessional, and not in his capacity as citizen, and thitefore declined to tes- tify. Inthis he was sustained by the court On the part of the accused, he proved a conclusive alibi, that be was in company with his brothers during the whole night of the ropber and wasfoundin bed by Mr Hutton at three o’clock in the morning, immediately af er he heard of the rebbery. It was @ matter of surprise thatthe ec- cused did not callon Mr. Hickey to testify that he had no connection with the matter. It is said that the mo- ney was returned through the hands of an Irish Catho- lie girl to . give to .Priest Hickey, but that she had no connection with the robbery.
