Wasmrworow, Oot. 11, 1847. The News of the Day. ‘We received another overland mail from Baltimore this morning, and another is to be sent back to-night. Our letters for several days past, we suppose, will reach you in a few days, as they all went down by the bay route Capt. Slack, of the railroad conductors, says that Capt. Dewey, of Coleman’s hotel, did him great service in crossing the Patuxent “on a raft,” on Friday morn- ing, in his journey to Baltimore. Capt. D. accompanied Capt. 8. through, The Potomac is still receding. The great storm of Thursday night last. as far as we can learn, was at least 150 miles wide, coming up south-east from the Atlantic, and crossing, in a north-westerly direction from this ity. the Alleghany mountains. Washington city was very heart of the storm Its duration, falling fowe & cataract, was from between six aud seven be: evening till past three the next morning. ‘“ “ern has suffered alittle, but the passage across is un! en. be drift. ‘The long pole on the top of the great dome of the ca- pitol with the big lantern on the top of the pole, stands Out im as bold relief as ever. ‘The President ving in hia healih, though he looks thie and pale Almost literally has he worked himeelf to skin and bo: titude to-day. jothing fc a We aid under and that the war was commenced to coerce Mexico into the payment of her debts. Mr. Trist’s jons. however, show it to. be 8 war to compel Mexico to sell, and that we are actually fighting for the privilege of buying territory that is not worth having asa gift. Is the purpose of the war changed. or what is the purpose of the war ? OLORES. PP. regret to hear that Mra Polk has for several days been suifering from chills and fevers Wastinaron, Oct 10. 1847. 3 Sabbath Eveniig. Three Deys Later from New York. ‘We have three days lator intelligence from New York by mail to-day. At half past eight o’clook this evening, twosteamers, (the Powhattan and Columbia,) with mails and passengers, from Baltimore by the Bay route, and thence up the Potomac, arrived in this port. From Balti- more across to Washington by railroad or turnpike the distance is forty miles or less; by bay and river route around, the distance exceeds two hundred miles. Capt, Slack, however, to-day couitrived to bring a mail through from Baltimore by the railroad—by locomotive to the chasm at the Patuxent from the washing away of the bridge, thence by stage or horse power to the next f meensles chasm in the road at Bladensburgh—thence by ive five miles to this city. ‘The perseverance displayed by Capt. Slack, on Frida: morning, after the storm, in getting through to Balti- ‘more, is entitled to high prais hen he reached the bridge at Bladensburg, with the train, he was warned and shortly after the bridge went by the board. sn hour sooner, ana the whole train might h: passed on to the bridge, and borne it down, passengers ‘and all, iato a wide and deep torrent, where all would have been lost. The train returned, but Capt. Slack crossed the swollen waters in a boat and partly on foot, and partly on horseback, (rafting himself across the Pa- tuxent, where a fine bridge was swept away ) reached the junction in time for a locomotive going to Baltimore, ‘where he reported progress, the damages to the road, and the a necessary to the re-opening of mail commu- Pe ebay 6¢ Passengers aro in this evening, via the Chesapeake Bay, from Baltimore. The bridge over the Savage river was quite a heavy structure, and it will take some time to suspond even a temporary structure over it. Travellers now take boats from Baltimore di- reot for Aquis creek, and loose no time on tho route except that they must leave here in the evening instead ofthe morning, but by doing so they save about $2 in fare. The mail for the North is interrupted at AXquia creek fn the same way. Some persons, however, take the Mne of stages that has been started for Washington. ‘Whilst othars seoure private conveyances of thelr own, The municipal election, which takes place here to-mor- row, will be ofa moat quiet and poorly contested charac- ter, as {fit had not have been for the announcement of the candidates, but few of the voters would ever have thought of ita approach. The Holliday street theatre is to open to-merrow night, under the management of William B, Blake, the excellent comedian. The company engaged is excellent, and at the head of them is the famous Harr Placide, no ‘well known and esteemed at the North. ‘he house is eo order. and Mr. Blake being a great favorite, privately and prefeesionally with our eltizens, cun- not fail to do a fine business. The Lehman family appeared last night at the Front street theatre to a crowded house. The election is going on with as little animation as / ever witnessed, and the number of votes polled will be ‘unusually smali, and the result appears mighty uncertain at the present moment. The apathy which has marked this campaign, continues unabated in the city and South- wark. In the upper districts, more animation is apparent; but nothing in comparison with that of former years. The residence of Charles Gilpin, Esq, in Walnut street, was bespattered with oll tar or black paint, dur- ing last night, so as to defile the whole front up to the second story. A similar outrage was committed some time sinee, which rendered a coat of paint necessary to hide the blemish. The authors of this outrage are be- Meved to be certain persons attached to the light fingered fraternity, who believing themselves licensed to steal take this mode of revenging themselves upon Mr. Gilpin — his exertions to convict them of certain charges of Mee Nias sesh when obiha het steamship building at weno ty § ‘were put up yer pg and to-day.
