‘uries of life, that existed before. The result of this was that the growth of agricultural products in the United Kingdom become diminished, while the importa. tion of foreign articles of food rapidly increased, as ex- hibited by the official returns of importations, for the past two years. We allude particularly to the importa- tion of tes, coffee, sugar, Kc. While this increased consumption of foreign luxuries was going on, the actual products of the country were rapidly diminishing. The withdrawal of such a large number of laborers from the agricultural districts, in connection with the unfavorable season, bad @ very alarming influence upon the extent of the harvest, resulting in an unusual deficiency. A bad harvest in Great Britain, generally creates tho most fearful forebodings; but when two follow in quick sue- cession, the most awful results are realised After the first bad harvest was experienced, instead of abandon- ing the railway speculations, and concentrating the ener- gies of the nation upon the development of the agricul- tural resources of the country, the mania continued to increase and strengthen with wonderful rapidity; the demand for laborers increased, new lines by the score were laid out, capital was withdrawn from other employ- ments for investment in railway scrip, and the most vital interests of the people were sacrificed, for the pur- pose of inflating this bubble. The result of all this, in connection with another unfavorable season, was ano- ther deficient harvest. This caused a further derange- ment in the tra? and commerce of the kingdom, by creating an extensive importation of breadstuffs, to fill the vacuum caused by the deficient harvests. The im- mensé exportation of bullion required in payment for the supply of food, deranged the publie finances, and Produced those’ embarrasements and difficulties which resulted in so many insolyencies. ‘The annexed table gives the quotations for stocks in this market for each day of the past week, and at the close of the week previous: — QvoraTions FoR THE Principat Stockain tHe New ‘ed, Th'y. For the whole ex- tent of a mile and « quarter, except in the main chan - nel, where the bridge is highest, the swollen river wax nearly to the flooring. A strong Northwester was blow- ing down the stream. There are two channels—one on the Washington, and one on the Virginia side of the ‘iver. All the stores in Water street in Georgetown, and for several streets on the samo level, are under water to the extent of the basement and apart of the first story. A saw mill from above is said to have come down the river last night, and lodged somewhere in the fields cou ntituting the site of Jackson city, which now presents ‘he appearance of a wide 7 lake, with its farm houses and trees standing in the midst of the deluge. Within 160 yards of Coleman's hotel the waters backed up from the river through the canal and spread over the lots and wood yards, and up to the doors of the houser, driving all the families on | Missouri avenue up stairs to do thelr cooking and eating.
