The Picayune publishes the official reports of Generals Salas and Rencon, from which it appears that Valencia did not know of Gen Smith’s detour to attack his rear. Rencon attributes the deteat of Cherubusco to an ex- baustion of ammunition, which rendered the unfit for service. bord Gen. Rencon reports 2 Second Lieutenants, 4 Ser- geants, 6 Corporals, and 23 Privates prisoners, and the Logion of St. Patrick killed in the battle of Cherubuseo The Yellow Fever. Wasnixaton, Oct, 3, 1847, Galviensis and the Union, It is #0 much the daily task and avocation of the Union to ‘Seat its words” at the bidding of ite masters, that it has at length learned to swallow the nauseous morsels without even awry face, The latest case of this sort of facile deglutition occurs in that paper of last evening, which retracts its endorsement of « certain article In « New York evening journal, commendatory of Mr. Dixon H. Lewis, and speaking with entire confidence of his re- election to the Senate of the United States. This en- dorsement the Union now swallows whole, unreservedly, and even with decided gusto ; and such is its amusing earnestness in the performance of this task, that it ab- solutely denies having endorsed the article at all. In udicrous connection with this denial it actually quotes the endorsement, word for word, innocently unconscious of the intrinsic refutation it has thus afforded its read- om, of the atolid untruth it utters. But if intrinsic proof of its witless blundering were wanting, there is abundant secondary evidence in the fact that the editor of the Union, when indignantly rebuked by those whom the insertion of the article had compromised, humbly and penitently acknowledged the error, and shifted the blame on his subordinate, declaring that he himself had never seen the article before its appearance in the oe- \umns of his paper. It is sufficient to add that he was sharply reproved for its appearance by the President, and that the prominent members of the cabinet ex- \reased excessive mortification at being placed im such a {olse position by the article in question. The Onion, in making this ungracious retraction svails \taelf of the opportunity to heap vile and unseemly abuse on Galviensis, I cannot suffer myself to be pro- voked into similar indecorum—nay | can afford to amile at the scurrilous ebuliltion, when | reflect that the tongue that assails #0 humble an individual as myself, has before now wagged in, defamation of the greatest ana best beloved in the land; and afterwards sang hallelujahs to their names, when power had jrendered them objects of its sordid worship. The Union bas applied to me the epithets “ contemp tible,”” and “worthless soribbier.”’ If, sacrificing all self-respect, I had, for a consideration , delivered myself bound and shackled in opinions, feelings, prejudices, principles, and oreed—divesting myself of all claim to free agency—binding myself for the term of four years to play the puppet, to laud my mester’s friends and sbuse his enemies, without stint or diserimination—and if, af- ter this unreserved sale, I were conssious | beld office only by sufferance, having no single qualification for the performance of my duty, except a incile willingness to flatter abuse—and if, with this eonviotion, | r'ilt held on, in foar and trembling, to the frail tenure of my sonnection with my employers, regardives of thel afte repeated su Wone th hey would give any price to got rid of mois, in fine, | should held myseit ready ®
