The war commenced at this point, and vpon this point the treaty failed. They will sell any other Part of their territory; but the principle upon which they first took uparms, they steadily adhere to. Asanr, Oct. 3—P. M. The Syracuse Convention adjourned at two o'clock this morning. Anti-alavery resolutions were offered, and after a vio- lent debate, they were tabled. Wasninaton, Oot 2, 1847, There is no longer any reason to doubt that negotiation. has failed, and that hostilities have been renewed, and this 4s the extent of the reliable intelligence by the late arrrival & Pensxcola. The details of the fight at Chapoltepeo weur anairof improbability. Chspottepee is the arsen- lof the city of Mexico. and is but one mile dietant from Tacubaya It is probable that the xmall force of Our army represented to have been attacked by # large body of Mexicans at this place, would have been at once biged before there could be such slaughter ae is eaid to have taken place, as the fight must have been direc ly ia view of ourencampwent Then nguiu, Gen Worth in wald to h. ported as either killed or wounded in every battle im been badly wounded, but he has been re- which he bas been engaged since the commencement of the war Whether this part of the account be trae or not, it in almost needless to vay, that the report of the terms offered by Mr. Trist, is « most clumsy fubrigation. No such terms were ever offered by Mr. Trist, for euch were not the terms of treaty be cerried with him; and ho would not have dared to compromise his govurument on hin own responsibility, by such monstrous propositions. No despatches have as yet been received from Mr. Trist or General Scott, and until the reovipt of official intelli- gence, nothing can be done. When the government aball be spprised officially of the failure of negotiations, Mr. Trist will, doubtless, be immediately rocalled, and the terms he was sent to offer will be given to the public. It will put our government more than ever in the right. Since the above was written, the telegraph has an- nouuced the arrival from Vera Crus, of the stesmer James L. Day at Now Orleaus, on the evouing of the 26th ult. The news by this arrival is of the greatest im- portance. The negotiations have beyond all doubt failed, the armistice had been broken, and our troops ‘bad on tho 16th ult., occupied tue cliy of Mexico, not without terrible loss, which is set down at from ove thousand to seventeen hundred killed and wounded; but whether in this is included the former loss at Churubus co and Contreras does not appear. General Bravo is re- ported as killed, and Santa Anna wounded. ‘The latter it is said, has retired to Guadaloupe with the remnant of his shattered army. The most prominent feature in this news, is the ter- rible loss wo have sustained. It is tobe hoped, how- ever, that rumor has greatly exaggerated it; but if the city wastaken by storm, there was beyond question some desperate fighting. The escupe of Santa Anna is much to be deplored, as whether or not he has succeed- edin bringing with him the archives of the govern- ment, he will undoubtedly endeavor to organize the go- vernment in some other place. The official secounts will probably come to hand this evening, in which case, if the telegraph be in order, (it is not now,) I will send @ summary of the particulars, GALVIENSIS. Wasninaron, October 2, 1847, Affaire in Mexico —The worst confirmed—The best done that could be done—The Eastern Mail, We are indebted to the courtesy of Hen. W. J. Brown of the Post-offlce Department, for the outline of a de- spatch received from the Government express through from New Orloans to Richmond, thence by telograph to this city. The James 1. Day, from Vera Cruz, had arrived at New Orleans, six days later. The news was received here by the Post-office Depart- ment this forenoon, and we should have sent it on at once ; but on repairing to the telegraph offloe,we learned from Mr. Bailey, one of the obliging operators, that the line between this city and Baltimore was out of fix. You will, therefore, have to rely upon the ies, but o few hours behind the lightning line, from Hiehmond. You will, of course, have received the news in ad- vance of the mail—of the hard fighting for five days at and in the city—of the loss of 1700 men of our army, of he death of Bravo, the Mexican General, and of Santa Anna being wounded in his retreat, twelve miles,to Guadaloupe. A messenger will leave bere immediately with do- spatehes for General Scott, and for the whole line from Vera Cruz up to the capital. w P. 8. The Post-ofice Department has closed the con- tract with the New Haven, Hartford, and Springfield $14.000—they asked $20,000, but the Post Master General brought them at last to the old terms. piel oan , Oet. 2a b Boston und Prov tdeuce iatread, estas tenes 100465 5 Cheshire Railroad, 9344: 6 Boston road, 11644; 7 do, uew, 114; 20 Kut nog Balt 90 d, 86; 100 do, s 3 d, b7: 25 M vchanta’ Bank, 8 do, 10636; 100 Kast te alrond, ver ceptady, |5 8’ ¢o Boston Bank rec egy: 7 do Tremout do, $99 rer shi 00d, 15 per for TY TKAVELLE KS GQUING fi r years w r-) mest ereeable fp -- 4 line to 004.
