The news from Mexico had rather a depressing in- fluence upon the stock market to-day. Most of the fancies fell off a fraction. At the first board Treasury notes declined % per cent; Reading Bonds, {; Far- mers’ Loan, 3g; Morris Canal, 44; Canton, % ; Harlem. 1; Reading, %; Norwich and Woroester, 34; Long Island 3g; Pennsylvania 6’s advanced 34, while Reading Mortgage Bonds, Indiana and Kentucky closed at prices current yesterday. The sales were quite large, princi- pally for cash and buyers’ option. At the second board there was a further decline in three or four of the fancies, while others were quite firm ‘Treasury Notes fell off 34 per cent; Reading Mortgage Bonds }; Canton \; Farmers’ Loan \; Harlem X; Reading Bonds, Reading Railroad and Morris Canal closed at prices current in the morning; Kentucky 6’ advanced }¢ per cent. The effect of the advices from the seat of war has not been so great as many anticipat- od It was our impression that the news, if unfavorable, would not have a very unfavorable effect, as prices were #0 wuch depressed, and the market so inactive. The result has been as we predicted. ‘The receipts of the Harlem Railroad Company for the month of September, 1847, were $26,036 05, against $18 549 34 for the corresponding month in 1846, showing an increase ef $7,496 71 for the month this year, equal to about 42 per cent. The Franklia Bank, of Cincinnati, has declared a dividend of five per cent, payable at the Bank of America on demand. The interest on the bonds issued by the State of Michigan, on account of the five million loan, which have been accnowledged and adjusted, will be paid on presentation of the coupons at the Phenix Bank in this oity. The State Bank of Newark, N. J., has declared a divi- dend of three and a half per cent forthe last six months ‘The Union Insurance Company of St Louis have dv- clared a dividend of seventeen and a half per cent forthe past six months. Counterfeit 10's on the Burlington County Bank, at Medford, N Y., are ino reulation in Philadelphia. The Dill sven is $25, letter A, payableto H. D., dated May 10th, 1846, and signed by B. Shreve, president, and J. Ol- iphant, cashier. The vignette is an Indian, with arms raised in attitude of wonder at the approach of a loco- motive and train of cars. The numeral figure X is at each corner, and on either side of the vignettes, being sixin all, which is unusual. The engraving is coarse, aud bears the imprint of Rawdon, Wright & Hatch. Ta 1345 there was exported trom Milwaukie 95.550 bushels wheat. In 1846 the amount reached 213,448 bushels wheat. Up to the lst of July, of the present year, there had been 250,450 bushels wheat shipped from that port, and no doubs between the Ist of Julyjand the close of navigation, an equally large amount will have gone from there. We may safely set down th port of wheat, from Milwaukie, for the present year, at hal « million of bushels. The export of flour, all of it made in the territory aud most of it in =e hibitea like rapid increase. In 1845, the wh of flour trom Milwaukie reached 7,420 barrelg,™ In 1846 it amounted to 15,756 bbis; and up to the leveSuly, the export for the present year, had reached 24,070 barrels For the whole year it will probably amount to 45 or 60,000 barrels. Previous to 1845, there was but very little wheat or flour shipped eastward, from Milwaukie. Indeed its ex porttrade can hardly be said to date back farther than three or four years. The above figures will serve to show how rapid has been its increase. Jn the annual report of the Harrisburg and L«noaster (Penn.) rafiroad, it is stated the receipts of the company for the year ending Sept. 1, amounted to $114,080, being an increase of $20,926 over the previous year. The un- finiehed part of the road has been eompleted, and the whole line from Diilerville to Harrisburg, repaired and put in excellent order. The financial affairs of the com- pany are in a greatly improved condition. In another column will be found a review of the posi- tien of different States of the Union, relative to their debts, sources of revenue, the extent of expenditures ko., at the latest dates. It will be perceived that most of these States are in @ prosperous condition, and the prospects are certainly very flattering. ‘The condition of the City Bank of Quebeo at the close of each of the past four months, was as annexed :— erate it 847. i Slst July, 31st Aug. isin hd ra £206,608 217,623 207,317 207,085 aie rt eae 2400 ©3490 lS 8,884 iereet 44,142 63,70 TH 606H,065 $3,238 52,703 49 251 Wihaos.niad “e308 090 357,007" 337,600 322,976 20,479 25-205, 22,467 92,47 22,069, 25,407 2La7 21,609 883 1,075 4,973 71 Lended ry ‘a other ” yperts ofthe b ik, 10.606 10,606 10,606, 10,606 Re ecure ies 97,100 97,100 97,100 97,000 597 950 552.105 ‘537,478 ‘515,293 ‘Petal averngearnets,£689.009 711,501 693473689, 8t0 The aggregate movement at the close ot the month of August was more reduced than in either of the previous three mouths The circulation was about the same as at the close of May, while the amount ofspecie on hand was more then fifty per cent. larger. ARK, Proprietor LATEST MOMENT. TELEGRAPHIC, | ame New York Democratic State Convention, Syaacuse, Oct. 1—1 P. M. The seat contested by Vache and Casserly, ot New York city, occupied the atention of the convention dur- ing the whole morning session. It was decided in favor Of Vache, the conservative delegate—ayes 66, nays 49. The preponderance of the conservatives is firmly estab- Mshed. The contented case between Cagger and Restor, of Albany, was decided in favor of Cagger, the radical delegace. The seat contested by Van Buren and Litch - field, of Albany, is now pending; a majority of the com - mittee have reported against Van'Buren. The conserva- tives will probably nominate Dayton, of Niagara, for Lt. Governor; the radicals will probably run Havemeyer, of New York, for that office, 10} o’cxocx, P. M. The convention is still engaged upon the prelimi- nary business of organisation. The last contested case is now under discussion. The committee reported in favor of Litchfield, and Mr Van Buren’s friends aro making @ desperate effort. The debate is characterized by bitter and disgusting personalities, and will probably be continued to a very late hour. Both factions concede that the most exciting topics are yet to be presented, and that this week will be too short for the transaction of the business of the convention. Also on the bill to abolish feudal tenurer, From the South. Puitapecrna, Oct, Ist, 1847, ‘The news from Mexico has been received at Peters- burg this morning by the mail. It was anticipated by the special express to the New York Herazd. ‘There is no further news from the south. A destructive fire begun at four o’clock this morning in Eisenberg & Co’s Steam Saw Mill, Pear street, which with Abbott & Newlins’ Brewery, was totally destroyed. Several adjacent buildings were injured. There wasa small insurance on the mill. The brewery was fully covered by insuran BY THE MAILS. Wasninaron, Sept. 30, 1847. The long agony over—News from the Army—No Peace —No Treaty—War, War—No more Overtures—Ques- tion resolved into the extinction of the Mexican Re- public, if she does not come to terms. The ponies have passed through with the most weighty and astounding intelligence. You will have received the news. The long agony is over—there is no peace— there is ne treaty—no adjustment—no hope of concil- iating the Mexicans to common sense; and the question now resolves itself into a prosecution of the war until Mexico shall sue for peace and surrender at discretion, or until asa nation she is extinguished and absorbed. History will bear ample testimony of the magnanimity with which this war has been prosecuted by the United States; of the desire of this government to save Mexioo, to redeem her fallen character, and to elevate her in the scale of nations. The olive branch has gone hand in hand with the sword — The armies of the United States bave paid liberally for all supplies—thry have reapeoted the reli- gion, the churches, private property and private rights of the people, with a scrupulous regard never exhi before in the history of any war between any two na- tions since the world began. But it all avails us no- thing. The Mexican government, the Mexican factions and demagogues are insane. There isno reasoning with them—they are blind, obstinate, perverse, and vein as they are contemptible. Itwas but yesterday that Mr. Buchanan expressed bimself as certain of a treaty. To-day the of an immediate peace is extinguished. Twenty pari et California! The sum is absurd, and the * manifest dew. tiny’ of California (Alta) was annexation to this Union ; now the ultimatum comes up of the absorption of the whole of Mexico. In the aggregate, some of the friends of the adminis- tration are not displeased at the bloody rupture of thé armistice. They were apprehensive that for the sake of peace, Mr. Trist in going to the furthest extreme of his instructions, would go too far. Now the feer is at an end. Now, "there is no ar regan to a war without reservation cr scruple until the enemy shall ory“ pec- cavi.”? The last overture has been made, and Mexico will be ocoupled until she shall ask for peace; and if she does not ask very soon, her existence as an independent na- tion is terminate: But e jh of this for the present. We await the full returns. Even yet there may be ahope. With the occupation of the city by Gen. The Executive. ‘The President to-day, is again somewhat indisposed. His illness appears to bea type of the bilious fever in ite incipient symptoms. We understand that he is under ® diagnosis accordingly. He suffered much physical pros- tration from his laborious and exhausting travels of the past summer; which superadded to his almost uninter- mitted application to his official duties, before and since his return, and his intense anxiety of mind in reference tojour foreign affairs, have been, doubtless, the causes in- duotng his present debility.
