The cases unsettled are Towle against Carrigan; Dunn against Livingston; Vache against Casserly, all from Now York; and Litchfield against Van Buren, and Cag- ger against Rector, from Albany. The case of Towle against Carrigan, from the 12th ward, New York, was reported by the committee in favor of Towle, and is now pending before the convention. Sale of the South—.4 Democratic Commissioner abroad In the outeet of this administration Messrs. Harris and Heartt published » Calhoun democratic paper in thin city, while Fisk and Dow published an anti-Ritchie far- ther up town. Failing of the public printing of either branch of Congress, the Fisk and Dow paper went down, and Fisk went off and turned preacher fur the Univer- salists; and Do.: having been more tractable, got at last aclerkship in one of the departments . The Constitution, howe’ was not only a more for- midable paper than the other, but it carried upon its face more visibly and distinctly the germ of a mutiny in the camp. It was particularly necessary to silence the insidious Calhoun organ, as it was hoped that in doing #0, the rupture which was threatened might be averted, and the breach caused by the dismissal of Mr. Cathoun from the State Department would be closed up. With this laudable end in view, negotiations took place. What followed is a matter of history. Mr. Har- tis was sent down to Brazil, where he has so recently distinguished himself as the U. 8. charge des ai Mr. Heartt bene ate were 2 in the post office dey ment, at some fourteen hundred s year, or more or less. But notwithstanding the Cunstitution was thus happily gotten out of the way, the breach in the cam widened, and the inevitable division so long threat between the Administration and Mr. Calhoun was long delayed. Mr. Calhoun was accused by Hop. Tur- ney of heresy, and formally read out of church a few days after by Col. Benton, in his white waistcoat and tortolse-sbeil framed eye-glass, pc Comma With the brietest outiine, the history ofthe case we here laid down to this point. We suppose that Mr. ‘Turney was required to exhibit some new bern zeal for | the faith, because of the suspicions attached to him, (fastened like burrs upon his coat tail) on account of his being returned to the Senate by the W sition to the regular Democratic nominee ; and we doubt not Col. Benton was equally desirous to atone for his /aux pas in the m x Of the Texas annexation. So the one turned accuser against Mr Culhouo, and the other volunteered as the judge to condemn the offender. But the battle is not yet over, and we shall see who will come off the victor in the end. . But upon the main question we have yet a word to nay. Nir. Heartt left bixclerkehip and went to South Caroli- na to take charge of a certain democratic pa] od now, sir, a good Calhoun man informs us, that this same Mr.’ Heartt has gone off into Pennsylvania to sell the State of South Carolina to the highest Presidential bid- der; and that he is doing this missionary job, not by and with the advice and consent of Mr. Calhoun, but by and with the advice and consent of the administration. Can it be possible that Mr. Heartt has no more heart than this? is it really a fact that @ petty clerkship has made him turn his heel upon his old friends’ We pause for information. HAYNE Wasmixa ton, Sept. 29, 1847. The Speakershup—A New Move. We hear of a new move on foot in reference to the Speakership. If the whigs shall have but a bare mejo- rity in the House, it will be somewhat difficult to effect cohesion upon any man, or any measure. Hil- fiard, of Alabeme, for Speaker, ond {f be only, in this janue, should get Laif # dozen whig voter, he will be cho- sen. Though # whig, it is presumed that his election aa Speaker would arrest any project against the new tariil, in the appointment ot a committes of ways and means of afree trade complexion. The Southern democrate, also, look to his support on the Wilmot proviro question It will be remembered that Mr. Hilliard yotea for the tariff of 46, and was indignant at the Wilmot proviso He was one of the ablest speakers of the House, and, be sides that, jee fine scholar, and witha: « Methoal«at preacher.
