We have been fortunate, heretofore, in good news trom Mexico on Sunday; hens, our citizens, (call it supersti- tion, if you please,) were led this morning to expect something during the day from Gen. Soott—something about the treaty, something about the condition of the army—something of peace—for we believe nobody here ever thinks of the quantity of territory to be got as a question of any importance at all, especially since the overy has iy le vt as has been mad we have been squabbling '@ have no news—we ma: t somethi: H but if that fails, we must ps geta pends Get os4 to-morrow morn Wasninaton, Sept. 26, 1847. News, We receive this evening, in the Charleston Mercury the official reports of Gen. Shields and Col. Dickinson, of the battles in front of the city of Mexico. Report says that all the reports of said fights have gone up to the Adjutant General. But of this we shall see. Gen, Shields speaks of the ground being “ filled with chasms;” but the General is as brave a son of the Green Isle as ever lived, and is entitled to a bull, whenever he chooses to take one boldly by the horns. Not one solitary tyllable about peace, saving rumors and conjectures, and guesses. Mr. Brown, of Richmond, the artist, who painted so faithfully Gen. Taylor and’ staff, will be here Monday evening with his pictures. We expect to see them. They are endorsed by Old Zack and his officers, ‘The contest in Maryland is “hip and thigh.’ The democrats are moving in the matter as if the election of the next President depended upon holding their own in Maryland. Kennedy they are determined to defeat, and the whigs themselves consider his chanee a slim one. w. Bautimone, Sept. 27, 1847. Political Affairs in Marylana—The Congressional Elec- tion in the City—The Markets, $c. Much interest is doubtless felt throughout the country us to the result of the election in this State for Governor and the Members of Congress, on Wednesday week. Une of the principal battle grounds ‘will be this city, where parties are so closely divided, that one vote either way may decide the contest. Robert MoLane, son of the Hon Lewis McLane, is the democratic candidate, and the Hon. John P. Kennedy is the whig candidate. ‘The for- mer is the candidate of the ‘Custom House clique,” and the latter of the “Court House click,” and both have some considerable opposition to encounter im their own ranks. The whigs will have some difficulty in overeom> ing the objections of the temperance men to Mr. Kenne- dy, who defeated the license bili at the last session though Mr. Meane can hardly attract the vote of the malcontents,as the clique which he leads is not fa- natical by any means on the subject of temperance.
