Philadelphians, generally speaking, are very unmind- ful of the tributes due to the memory of those departed worthies whose deeds have rendered their names cele brated upon the page of their country’s history. At least fifteen or twenty years ago the corner stone for an intended monument to Washington was buried in a most appropriate location in Washington Square. Gen. Lafayette assisted at the ceremonies, and a fund was commenced to build the structure ; some thousands of dollars were collected, and here the enterprise stopped. ‘The fund was put out at interest, and perhaps in a centu- ry or two will be augmented sufficiently to begin the good work. An instance similar in its character has ocourred during the last year. A monument over the remains of Commodore Stephen Decatur was determined upon. A pian for a niassive one of granite was adopted, which would cost RP.
