Philadelphians, generally speaking, are very unmind- ful of the tributes due to the memory of those departed worthies whose deeds have rendered their names cele brated upon the page of their country’s history. At least fifteen or twenty years ago the corner stone for an intended monument to Washington was buried in a most appropriate location in Washington Square. Gen. Lafayette assisted at the ceremonies, and a fund was commenced to build the structure ; some thousands of dollars were collected, and here the enterprise stopped. ‘The fund was put out at interest, and perhaps in a centu- ry or two will be augmented sufficiently to begin the good work. An instance similar in its character has ocourred during the last year. A monument over the remains of Commodore Stephen Decatur was determined upon. A pian for a niassive one of granite was adopted, which would cost RP. By great exertion about $1100 was contributed b; patriot lc citizens here and at Washing- ton, among’ the employes. at the various navy gets &o., and now the enterprise has apparantly com stand still, For several months the collections ite Te- mained in statx quo, and there is every reason to fear that it will fall through. So much forthe Philadelphia patriotic spirit that is wont to delight in honoring the memory of the gallant dead, whose deeds live after them none the less for having the spot where their remains re , marked by the enduring stone. he despatches from the South for the newspapers have been again stopped at Baltimore, this morning, by the wires between that city and Philadelphia being out of order. The fact is, that for a week past the wire has been upon the ground at some point along the line, and during damp or rainy weather it has been almost impos- sible to transmit a word. The second wire between the two cities is now ready to be put in operation, and bet- ter fied may then be hoped for. authorities of Spring Garden have offered a re- wate of $600 for the arrest and conviction of the Hsien diary that originated the fire of Sundsy morning last in Nectarine street.
