Wednesday, Sept. 15th—6 P, M, ‘The stock market continues very much depressed.— Most all the fancies fell eff to-day. Atthe first board Long Island declined 34 per cent; Harlem 2; Canton 1's; Barmers’ Loen %; Treasury Notes 3; Reading Ra'lrosd. 1, and Pennsylvania Fives %. Norwich and Worcester and Morris Canal closed at prices current yesterday. — Quotations for most of the fancies rule lower than they have Leen for many months, and it appears to be the ge- neral !mpreasion in the street that we have about reach- ed the turning point, Money is abundant. and the rate of interest rules very low. Any quantity ‘of capital can be obtained on first rate security at five per cent, and the principal cause of the great decline in prices for stock« generally, is the tremendous reaction produced by the sudden inflation. At the second board Norwich and Worcester advanc- od 1% per cont; Farmers’ Loan 4; Treasury Notes 34. ‘There was a very fair amount of business done to-day in sterling exchange, but the high rates had a tendency to check remittances, Prime bills om London closed at $a 834 per cent premium. The rates for bills for some time tocome depend very much upon the nature of our next advicesfrom Europe. The Britannia is nearly due; her accounts will be sixteen days later (unless the Union from Cherbourg anticipates her newe,)and we shall have advices that will settle the fate ofa great many houses’ now shaking in the wind. ‘Tho Erie Railroad Company have issued proposals for 8 loan of $750,000, to bear interest at the rateof sever per cent. Tho immense quantity of breadstufts whioh has reached that market tho past year, is so much evater than Usual, that we eannot expect such another influx, aotil eauses exist again similar to those which brought out these receipts, ‘The value of the sugar crop of Louistuns stands next te cotton, and it is the secomd most important item in the table of receipts at New Orleans. The Moxiean Capital at the Merey of the American Army, de, Ke. Se ‘Tho New Orleans Picayune of the 9th instant, con- tains a series of letters from Mr. Kendall, together with the lists of the killed and wounded in the two battles. ‘The New York regiment of volunteers had one hun- dred and three men killed and wounded. The greatest loss «f the Americans was sustained in the attack upon what Santa Anna called his second lins No reconnoizance of this strong position of the enemy having been made, and the brilliant success of the morn- ing having inspired our troops to the utmost degree of enthusiasm, they rushed peli mell into the position most exposed, and were mowed down by hundreds. Out of the six thousand Americans engaged in the Sight, the loss falls but little short of eleven hundred. When the works of the enemy came to be examined, Person naturally wonders that General Scott’s entire force was not swept away. However, place them in the same position in which the enemy was, and there were never enough Mexicans born to drive them out, A second letter from Mr. Kendall, dated Tacubaya August 26th, states that the armistice had produced universal dissatisfaction in the army ; it being regarded as one of the old tricks of Santa Anna to gain time, for the purpose of planning some new scheme of trickery and dissimulation. Mr. K. is not of the opinion that an honorable peace will grow out of it, and in this belief he is jotmed by ma. ny officers of the urmy. He alleges that the whole mat- ter was planned by the British Minister, who backs San- ta Anna in bis course. It is reported that Gens, Paredes and Bastamente, are | both approaching the capital from different directions, each with a strong force, and breathing death and de struction to the Americans. ‘The number of deserters and other foreigners found fighting against us, and now taken prisoners, is seventy- two. A court-martial, with Col. Garland as President, was in session for the trial of these precious rasculs, and it was thought that full justice would be meted out to them. Riley, the Irish deserter, who commanded them, openly makes his boasts of what he has done, and says that he expecets no mercy, Gen, Scott was himself wounded by a grape shot which struek him on the outside of the leg elow thu Kaeo. Iv experienced #0 little pain from i, however, at the time, that he said nothing about it, but it has since become inflamed, and caused him much uneusiness Three members of the Mexitan Congress were taken | Prisoners, but were to be liberated, in order that thy | might take part in the Osliberations of that body, rein- | tive to the question of peace, Another letter from Mr, Kendall, dated the 26th ult. states that positive information had been received that Gen. Valencia, had, with his aid de camp, arrived at To luca, and was in a state of inebriation. It is also aver- red, that he was even drunk at the time of his engage- ment with the Americans, ‘The prospects of peace look more bright than pre- viously. The Mexican soldiers have returned, crest- | fallen, to their homes, many of them having fled from | , | pent, Underneath this in painted “San Patri | | the fleld like poltroons, before they received shot. ‘The panio of the enemy was #0 great on the 20!n uit , that tho weakest American regiment could have entered the Grand Plaga of their capital, without any fear of opporition. There are many rumors from tho oity, one of which Teprorents Santa Anna to be busily engaged in throwing agine that these defenges areto be mannned by the | | American soldiery, who will defend him against the at- taoks of those of his own countrymen, who may be dis- pored 1 oppose him in his endeavors to effect a peace General Sains acknowledges that he was totally routed, but blames Torrejon with having fled the field’ and by such conduct causing his defeat. He also says that Valencia ran off at the commencement of the fiuht ‘The banners of the Foreign Legion were captured by the 13th Infantry, Referring to one of the banners, Mr, Kendall thas describes its appearance :—It is of green silk, and hason one side « harp, surmounted by the Mexican cont of arms, with « scroll,in which je Painted “ Libertad por la Republica Mericana,” under | neath a herp, with the motto," Erin go Brugh.” On the other side is s painting of a badly exeouted figure, made to represent St. Patrick, who holds in his left hand © key, and in his right n crook, or ataff, resting on a ser To the oredit of the Irish, in the American rank: be it said, they are the londest in denunciation of the miserable wretches who fought and killed 6 mary Americans under the abeve fleg. A train of wagons ontered the capital on the 26th uit, to obtain forage, where they were attacked by « rabble with stones, and were driven out of the city. Th» \ox- joan guard did not Interfere to protect them, not withstanding that they had a full knowledge of the terms of the armistice, Senta Anna subsequently
