MONEY MARKET. ‘5 Tuesday, Sept. 146 P.M. Quotations for all kinds of stocks are running down as rapidly as any bear in the street can desire. Norwich and Worcester fell off te-day 6 per cent; Reading Bonds 44; Reading Railroad 34; Farmers’ Loan %: Morris Ca- nal X; Canton 144; Long Island }4, and Harlem 1, Trea- sury Notes, Ohio 7s, Pennsylvania 6s, and Reading Mort- gage bonds closed at prices current yesterday. There ‘were very large sales of the principal fancies at the de- cline, and the market closed heavy. Norwich and Wor- eestor ia now lower than ithas been for several years, and we seo no immediate prospect ofits being any high- er, but on the contrary, there is every probability of its going lower. Within the past ten days, there hasbeen a decline in this stock of vighteen per cent, and the bulls must have any quantity of backbone if they can bear ‘up under it. ‘The demand for foreign exchange by this packet has not asyet been very extensive. We quote prime bills on London at $a S34 per eent premium; on Paris 6f. 2634 a6f 25; Amsterdam 39% a 40; Hamburg 353; a 36; Bre- men 78% a79. Wecannotexpect remittances will be made by this packet of sterling bills for a very large amount, at the rates now ruling, as the probability is that the premium will be much less some weeks hence, when confidence becomes restored, and the character of some of the bills on the market improved. ‘The Mohawk and Hudson Railroud Company have declared a dividend of two and a half per cent, payable on the loth of October. This isthe commencement of its dividends, and they will hereafter, without doubt, be regularly paid. ‘We annex our usual table of quotations for the prin- cipal State and other stocks ubed for investment :— Ni Maaxer. We have received from time to time advices from the seat of war calculated to allay all those fears grow- ing out of the prospect of a protracted war, M&t the eontidence they created, has generally been short-lived, the accounts never having been sufilciently definite to give permanent hopes of peace. The progress of our army aa not been arrested at any point, and Gen, Scott has vet himself down before the city of Mexico, ready any moment, to take porestion, We doubt, howover the policy of his doing so, even in the event of the Mexi- ean government refusing to negotiate a treaty of peace. His position outside the city is much more tenable ; he oan control supplies mach more ef ccually in the passes to the city than within its walls; he has the first chance at everything intended for the consumption of the in- hubituvts of che city, and can help himself, theseare some of the considerations which have uo doubt infla- enced the Commander in Chief of the army of occupa: tion to notenter the city. Our accounts relative to the armistice, and the disposition evinced by the Mexfcans to negotiate with our peace Commissioner, are not 0 clear as ‘hose regarding the movementsof tho ermy We are disposed to seize upon every movement giv- ing the simalleat hops of peace; bus we cannot shut our eyes te the fact, that the Mexicans hove seen city after city full into our hands, without evine- ing any disposition to arrest the progress of our army by negotiation; taey have, even atter all their strongholds had fallen into our possession, and’ their eapital menaced, refured to negotiatiate upon avy terms—and we can hard!y conceive {t possible, that eueh @ urea’ change could have come over them; that the government could so suddenly have come to its senses: Tno:eis apower in Mexleo behind the government, euperior to it in every respect, and not £0 easily reached We mean the people; the masses, So long as we cannot get thoir consent to any treaty we may choose to make, there is no guaranty that any one mode with tue government would last twenty-four hours; and such is the pregarious position of any government in that country, that no set of men would daro do anything diametrically contrary to the knowa wishes of the people. In consequence of this, we do not look for auy immediate cessation of hostilities, or for any immediate arrangement of the difficulties between the two governments upon amicable terms, Further ad viows from the seat of war are anxiously looked for, a¢ the gceutest doadt and uncertainty exist relative to all our #ffairs in that section of the world. ‘The public works of all our States continue to be ex: cordingly productive, It is estimated tht the increase in the gross incomes of the public works throughout the coustry, this year, compared with last, will average about twenty-five per ceut. BY THE MAILS Wasninarvon, Sept, 18, 1847. Still Waiting. We have nothing later from General Seétt. When the news does come, we shall perhaps have a whole broadside of glory, and victory, and peace. Hope 40. No man doubts Gencral Soott being in Mexico. The only doubt is, where is the Mexican army? Did it ea- pitulate? Did it retire from the city, and lwave the keys with the city governor? Did the government evacuate with the army, or arg they all on the apot, closing up the agreement of indemmities und boundaries? These are the facts yet tobe known. ‘The anxiety inereases with the delay of an official report. Where in — Lally? Why {a it that we have to wait for the Bri courter If Sante Anna is vanquished, why has he not ven Scott @ passport, and an escort for his messenger to Vera Cruz? In the absence of the official facts in the matter, we can only sift the news we have recelyed, AN ANGEL, Wasninaton, Sept. 18, 1847. General Taylor. Old Zack has to stand still. Two of his best regi- ments are deducted from his force. His water tanks for crossing the desert of Encarnacion will have to remain on this side, And we believe the polley judicious — Nothing could be gained by the march now to St Louis, and much might be lost by the guerillas in the extension of his line, Besides, there is, perhaps, peace just at hand. Nor do we think Old Zac will resign, We expect that he will seo the wisdom of the draft made upon him, and that like « good officer as he is, he will submit as he when the polley was not 80 cont cout. He bas ‘Drege battery enem: ive ith the troops of General Wool he can hold his own, and if 5,000 men are enough for this dut; 000 are a super- fluity. ‘The transfer of the two regiments to Vera Cruz is judicious. oO. The dancing closed at sunsot, and the company from Alexandria repaired to the large open boat in the canal, which had brought them up. Here on the embankment, Mr. Custis was called upon, and made a speech, in which he glanced at the glorious history and unparalleled p y of our country, and couciuded by expressing his pleas enjoyment of the company, should always be weleome to t ton. (Three times three.) eat the d declared that they ospitalities of Arling- Col, Alexander (on board the boat) briefly but very handsomely returned the thanks of the whole deloga- tion, The kind and venerable patriot of Arlington would be venerated while he lived ; and in memory be | would be revered while the old oak put forth ite leaves in the spring, or a longas the clear fountain con. Unued to flow to the river. Maras! A painting by Mr. Curtis of the Battle of Prinseton was hung up in the dancing saloon, and attracted gen- eral admiration. The white charger of Washiogton looks as though he were of the same tribe as “old whitey” of Palo Alto, Resaca and Buena Vista. Many long years to the old patriot ef Arlington, ‘Ts | cities of Washington and Alexandria were unfortumate during the last war, not in men to defend them, but in officers to stand by them, and lead them end hoid th to the work. That's the reason why we have to dri upon Baltimore for » vietory ; still, for all thet, the Mexican war tells a redveming story for this metropolis, in the names of Walker, and May cud Weightman, and Wells, and Boyle, and a host of others, besides the hun- dreds che hag sent down of the rank and tile, w Barrimoxs, Sept. 14, 1847, Celebration of the Anniversary of the Battle of North Point—Democratic Festival—Potitieal Calm. The celebration of the anniversary of the Battle of North Point was more general yesterday than has been the case for many years. As the remnant of these gal- lant men becomes smaller, the anxiety on the part of our citizens to do honor to them and their anniversary increases. The trip of the Old Defenders to Frederick, was a most pleagant one. They returned at 10 o'clock lust might, highly gratified with the trip and their hospi- tuble reception. ‘There was a grand Democratic Festival held yeater- terday at the Washington Garden, on which peeasion a roasted ox was served up a la barbacue 46 the assem. blage.
