a exports have given us, we should in times past have gone to any extent, and ran largely in debt; but now we consume our own fabrics, manufacture to an immense extent our own iron, and supply the Place, by our own industry, of an enormous amount of merchandise, which heretofore bas come from Europe, and which we have in many instances had to pay for with the hard dollars. With a falling off of more than four millions of dollars in the balance against us in the trade of this port alone, there is very little probability of there being at present an exportation of specie to any extent. The official returns of the trade and commerce of the United States for 1847, will show a result very dif- ferent from any heretofore given, The aggregate value of either imports or exports may not be so large as have been given, but the balance will be on the right side of the account, aud we shall be able to make 9 mere favor- able statoment. 10000 Treas Nuva 1 be 103 $7 Sea ‘ae are ous it spt be ie 14a Nor & Wor KiB b90 5656 130 Es 100 do a7 ed 0 do 49” 250 L Island RR 4 460 Read ng Bonds 143 50" do bis 34 we 3 a8 aw i ar ‘its Realin RR 6654 100 do bid $4 ” Warmers’ Trust a 300 do 4 iy se 338 ise do aa mm do : 360 Harlem RR rt 150 do ws: O do @ Morris Canal b60 4" 50 do 0 do 260 1g 50 do 3 do, 1 10 do % MerchisEx'reCo 77 65) 40 ig Schenectady 115° 100. do af, Usien Bohenectady 80 Hudson River RR 3 1s do Ws “5 do 6 17 Unies Serip is Second Board. $1000 Tren Nex6's on 104° Aun she Harlem RR 69 2008 do 14 190 68 sea ¥ ~ PY me Cange Co ak pS A0'sheL Jland RR py 3 109 Mons Cava 60 PME Fy a Nore Wor: BR 3 Marte no GR do its to | do Gt 50 Farmers’ Loan 4 a0 do bio 69 New Stock E: sie ‘Treas Notes b30 103 if sta Hao RR e Fd eed do Dee 25 103 ce 6f Bima bine, ‘ ° to ao. 30 mo bay 38 8 Nork’WerRR ¢ 535 50 i, 100 a DIO 3456 160 L tsland RR bis 34 3 Hulem RR "9 683 30d bia i 100 ¥ do bs 68: 50 do ec 4, i00 do Cs ae ee CITY TRADE REPORT. Yellow F Fever in in New Orleans. Pucapetrmtia, Sept. 10, 1847. Interments in New Orleans from fever, Sept. 2, 77; Charity Hospital, 14; Lafayette Hospital, 14. Se BY THE MAILS, HincTON, September 8, 1847. Mail Failures The Whigs and the Slavery Question— Mr. Benton, ‘Two more-failures of the mail—one last evening, and one Tuesday evening. What « jewel of « Post Master General. The whigs are very foolishly determined to oppose ny acquisition of territory from Mexico, and to make this an issue at the next Presidential election—at least it would appear so fiom present indications. They ex- pect to unite in support of this policy, the fanatios of tho North and of the South, the ultra abolitionists and the ultra upholders of slavery. The abolitionists may support the policy, but the South will not sustain it, The great body of the southern peopio are content to decide the question by an extension of the line of the | Missouri compromise, and on the samo terms—that is, that North of thirty-six degrees thirty minutes, there Shall be uo slavery, and that its establishment south of that line, shall be left to the people of such Siate as may be formed south of the line, 1 look upon it as cer- tain, that slavery cannot exist, at all,in any territory woshall acquire by treaty from Mexico, for the simple reason, that slavery in such territory would be not only unproductive but burdensome. The North, consequent- | ly, can have no valid objection to the disposal of the queation, by extension of the line of the Missouri t | Compromise. ‘The South insist upon this compromise as @ point of honor. Every southern man who has ex- amined the subject, is doubtless convinced that slavery | cannot exist in any territory we may acquire in Mexico; | but, nevertheless, southern men will never consent to declare, on compulsion, that slavery shall not exist in | euch territory. But there are men at the South who forsee that Mlavery cannot exist in the Californias or New Mexico, and who, on that account, will oppose this acquisition, regardless of the manifold advantages accruing to the United men are so illiberal, and so blinded to the interests of the Union by selfish considerations, To protest against the extension of our national domain unless slavery shall extend pari passu, 1s preposterous. It is chimerical to 1» | ¢Xpect that the slave States can ever attain to a nume- | tical equality with the free States ; but their very weak- | ness will be # source of strength. ‘They will always hold the balance of power. The two great parties which now divide the free States will be obliged each t to the South, 60 that there is not, in reality, any danger of encroachment by the North on the area of slavery .— | The Southern States will be bie, at all times, to hold . | their own. The Union intimated, some time sinoe, that Mr. Ben- | ton would not oppose the administration next session. It spoke rather in hope than in certainty, and had no | valid ground for the assertion, Mr. Benton will doubt- | less be occupied in opposing Mr. Calhoun, and trying General Kearny ; but he will also find time to manifest his feelings towards the administration, to which, if not decidedly hostile, he is by no means favorable. 1 trust there will not be a repetition of the disgraceful scenes émacted last session. Mr Bonton is a very able man, _"GALVIENSIB. “Wasninaton, Sept. 9, 1847, | More Victories—The Rainbow appearing again—Scott at the Gates of Mexico—1 Truce granted to consider the offers of Mr. Trist. The lightning line brings us « report to-day of two severe battles fought and won by Gen.
