Faron, August 27, 1847. Coming to a Focus. focus. ‘The escape of Major Gaines and Midshipman Rogers from the city of Mexico, at this juncture, cannot fail to have been of great advantage to the movement of Gen. Scott, in information, however imperfect from the hurry left the capital, still in which these prisoners must bi of great value in disclosing the geueral position, condi tion, strength, organization, and designs of the enemy. Suoh information as those ‘two offcers may lave com- municated, may, indeed, turn out to be a fall compensa- it, and the many hardships endured by Gaines and Rogers, We take it for granted that there 10 no mistake sbout their escape. as ic is quite likely the Mexicans were too Dusily employed in their defences to attend vigilantly to tion to tl American army for the long imprison their prisoners Gen. Pierce had out his way through the gueriline which, notwithstanding the extraordinary slaughter of them by the extraordinary courier of a New York paper. etill infest the road to Vera Cruz in swarms), avd had reached Puebla on the 6th inst., which would’ give to Gen Scott an effective force of 15 000 men equivalent to cope with 50.000 Mexicans, even ne posing that ey are equal in courage aad discipline to the troops of Santa Anna they have raised that number, and that at Buena Vista, which canuot possibly be the case The reported march of Santa Anna upon Puebla, with 15,000 men, and fifty pieces of artillery, we suspect, is not exactly the fact. He may have left the city of Mex- ico to eatrench himself in some one of the monntain de- iiles against the expected arrival of Scott; but command- ing a4 the Mexicans do, the means of information of Scott's moveniente and purposes, and of the day of hix march, as #oou a8 promulgated, they would not be likely to volunteer & march of eighty-six or ninety miles for the accommodation of the American army, Doubtless, they will have selected « strong position, and fortified it at which point they will await the arrival of General cott. ‘Phe volunteer forces of the American General will be found, we expect, from their drilling at Puebla, equal in un engagement to a solid body of regular troops. Major Lally, with his provision train from Vera Cri it appears, was very warmly received by the guerill: El Puente Nacional; but whether he lost any o bread curts, the telegraph does not inform us. If not imistuken, the Major had with him a body men of all arms, and supplies necessary for the march to the city of Mexico. ‘This was on the 1 Gun, Scott may have been delayed at Puebla at least the news ot the approach of the tr = To our mind, the failure of the in mustering and planting an armed organizat ut or ten thou- sand men at some strong point 1 between Vera Cruz and Puebla, to out off re ents and supplier t Gen. Scott, ia prot eonelus inefficiency to defend the cupital We predict a decent fight o xicans, and an easy victory or two for G 1 a dis banding of the Mexican arp @onfusion among the Mexican Generals, : on of the Cou uch an universal stam, general breaking up of housekeeping in the he Monte- aumuson the entrée of the American army, that the British minister will not be able to find the Mexican Government, and the Government itself will be unable to find Suuta Anna, Ww. Wasuinoton, August 27, 1847, The Chances of Peace—The last News Father Ritchie says there is a chance for peace—but he makes it out a very slim chance. ‘The lust news does not look much like peace. Not one werd about the over- ture of Mr. Trist. He stands in the back ground. Sup- pose Santa Anna is whipped—a very reasonable supposi- tion—but has so arranged it as to run off—and suppose Scott enters the city of Mexico, and finds that the Con- gress, and Santa Anna and the army, and the British minister have vamozed to some obscure village over the mountaing, and difficult of access—what is to be done’ Patch up a mongrel government, half Mexican and balf Yankee, and make peace with it? Will that sort of Peace be of any force at all? Will it hold good with the Mexicans? “Will it hold good with John Bull? Will it stand good for twenty-four hours? No, sir, no such humbug will answer; ‘and we are satisfied that no scheme of patching ups government will be attempted by General Scott, tor the benefit of a treaty. If we have no peace with the taking of the capital, and the govern- ment has fled, occupy the capital and follow m4 18 BOV- ernment as long as it is ackaowledged by the British minister, until you catch the government, minister and all, and bring all hands buck to Mexico and sign « peace. IZTACCIHUATL, aron, August 27, 1847 Coming to a Point We hear of no messenger from Gen. Scott to-night We oan only account for it from the fact that be has no nger through. In other | men to spare to bring a mes: respects, the wants of the army as set forth by Mr Ken- dall, and the importance of the movement upon Mexico would seem to justify a special application and coramu- nication to the War Department. Perhaps, however, the old General scorns to report any thing to the war of- fice short ot a great victory. Mr. Kendall makes out a case justifying the delay at Puebla; and Scott is not the man to deley without a cause. He has found out that the policy of Old Zack is, after all, the best policy, not to move forward until you are ready, #0 that when you do move, you move with the certainty of success. Of one thing we are pretty well assured, that General Scott is determined to bring the legitimate Mexican | government to terms British Minister and all. as « bet- ter plan than the setting up of » humbug with which to make a treaty of peace. The legitimate government is humbug enough, but a Scott government as the basis of & treaty would he worse for the securing a peace than the unfortunate miscalculation of letting in Santa Anna Northing short of the acquiescence of the recognized Mexican goveroment, including Santa Anna, or exclud- ing him, will answer the purpose. w.
