The advices from Vera Cruz are of the 12th, Tampico 14th, and Brazos 15th inst. Gen. Scott was still at Puebla. The army was to take up the line of march on the next day for the city of Mexico. Gen. Twigg’s division was to leave on the seventh, Gen. Quitman’s on the eighth, Gen. Worth’s on the ninth, and Gen. Pillow’s on the tenth. Col. Childs remains in command at Puebla. General Pierce arrived at Puebla on the 6th; lost not a single man on the march, notwithstanding another severe battle with the guerillas. ‘The most agreeable news by this arrival is the escape of Major Gaines and Passed Midshipman Rogers from the city of Mexico, and their safe arrival at Gen. Soott’s head quarters. Major Gaines arrived on the 4th inst, They will be of great value to Gen. Soott in his attack on the capital. The letters mention an affair between Capt. Ruff of the Rifles and the commander of a guerilla party, in which the latter was entirely routed. Mr. Kendall reports the death of Lieutenant Hill of the second dragoons, and Dr, Hamner of the South Ca- rolina regiment. ‘The train which left Vera Cruz on the evening of the 6th had been attacked about twenty-four miles from Vera Cruz, Indeed the attacks commenced shortly after leaving that city. Captain Fairchild’s, and Capt. Besancon’s companies had a fight with the guerilla parties, and a serious af- fair at the National Bridge. The Sun of Anahuac, of the 12th, states that the dra- goons report an action eight miles from the National Bridge, and that Captain Baldwin and Cummings wore wounded. Twenty-five Mexicans and eight Americans were killed. The Americans being reinforced, a hard fight was ex- pected at the bridge. ‘The communications being interrupted, and the spe- cial express from Puebla having been cut off, we have no advices direct from General Scott's army. The Delva states that letters to merchants there posi- tively announce that Gen. Scott would move from Pue- blaon the 7th. The Picayune correspondents say he was to march on the 8th. Midshipman Rogers and Major Gaines report, that Santa Anna was marching with fifteen thousand men to meet Gen, Scott. A night attack on Tampico was expected. ‘The yellow fever was spreading at Tampico, but at Vera Cruz it was on the decrease. The “ Sun of Anahuac’ of the 11th contains rumors that a messenger, guarded by two hundred Mezican ca- valry, had arrived at Puebla with despatches from the City of Mexico for General Scott. ‘The escort of the train was under command of Major Lally, of the Ninth Infantry, Colonel Wilson being down with yellow fever, as we Lefore stated. Telegraphic Despatch, No. 2. Ricumonp, Aug. 27, 1847. ‘The Picayune’s correspondent from the camp at the National Bridge, twenty-four miles from Vera Crus, Aug. 11, gives the particulars of an attack on the train, and says the command under Major Lally was met by guerillas yesterday in heavy force, at s pass one mile to the rear of tlie camp, about three in the afternoon. Attacks were made upon the front, rear, and centre trains, They were repulsed at all points, and we ad- vanced to this encampment; but our loss is severe. ‘Two officers were severely wounded, Capt. Jas. H. Cald- well, of Voltigeurs, and Capt. Arthur C, Cummings, 11th Infantry—the former a native of Maryland, the latter of Virginia. ‘Ten men, non-commissioned officers and pri- vates, were wounded; none were killed outright, but one has died since, and some are, perhaps, dangerously wounded. Hopes are entertained for the recovery of the two captains. he writer thinks the command will make its way through securely, perhaps fighting for many days. We are about twelve miles from the National Bridge, and move on a few miles to-day. The Sun of nahwac says eight of our men were killed, including Capt, Loyells, of the Georgia mounted men, and twenty-five of the enemy. Governor Wilson immediately ordered out reinforce- ments. Verbal reports say, the Americans had thirty men wounded, and as many horses killed. Serious fears were entertained for the safety of the train, the Mexicans having made extensive preparations to cut it off. The Mexicans are under the impression that the train has a million of dollars in specie. It was reported at Vera Cruz, that the Mexicans had destroyed a part of the National Bridge, and erected de- fensive works. A decisive action was expected at this point. The Sun of Anahuac sete down the number of guerillas at four thousand. Col. Wilson is convalescent. The health of Vera Crus is more favorabl , mw The Spanish Minister was expected at Vera Crus on the 25th, on his way to Spain. Kendall, from Puebla, writes that Capt. Ruf, with his Rifles, has given the guerillas at San Juan De Los Lia- nos, a severe drubbing, killing 43, and wounding some 60. August Sth—He writes that the account of Rufl’s adventure is fully confirmed, Major Gaines thinks Santa Anna has about 15,000 tolerably disciplined, uni- formed and drilled troops, besides undisciplined recruits, adding little strength to his army. Kendall adds that since he commenced this letter, Scott’s orders to march the army have been issued, and gives particulars as per first despatch, The sick and convalescent he left be- hind, Scott was accompanied by Quitman, and the whole army will probably be concentrated at some point beside the capital. On the 6th, Kendall writes that Pierce arrived thr) morning, his men, though jaded and travel-worn, mak ing a most soldierly appearance. He came through without losing a man, though be was attacked several times. Kendall says a hundred conflicting rumors are afloat— one that Valencia is coming out with twelve thousand men to attack us in the front, while Alvares, with five thousand Pintoos, makes a demonstration in the rear, | Another rumor says that Santa Anna has disarmed three thousand of the National Guard, who were disco- vered plotting againct him ; another, that s revolution has broken out against him, and all was confusion worse confounded. Still another, that Puebla was to be at- | tacked after our army had left, the garrison put to the eword, and the citizens punished for their good treat- ment of the Yankees. Kendall believes there is no sha- dow of foundation for any of these rumors. He con- | cludes his ietter late at night by saying that Gon. Twiggs | will move to-morrow morning Reports continue to come in that large bodies of the | enemy are moving in the neighborhood. He had just heard of « thousand guerillas seen at Fl Pinal. ‘The Delta’s Vera Cruz correspondent says « letter re- ceived from Puebla, dated the lith, to « mercantile house, states that Gen, Scott moved ferward that day. ‘Tampico was very unhealthy ‘The yellow fever had broken out in the Anton Lizardo n. At Tampico they wore constantly expecting » night attack from Garay. Nothing further from Gen. Taylor, ‘The Diario Det Gobierno, of the 3dAugust, says the Commercial Times, seems to announce & desire on the part of Santa Anna and his ministers, to prepare the minds of the people for pacifie arrangements. £/ Solden | denounces as puerile, the Diario’s ideas of waiting until victory crowns the Mexican arms, before making or re | ceiving overtures of peace.
