Hiition amoug ity is iu op- aa {n favor of uew i prevailing and growing and the fe probabliity is that be and men who thued with ane “cS or faction, aud elevated to those places which bave led by the Albany Regenoy, and their rings, the Comptroller, and Mr. Jobn Van Bu- tie Attorney General, have both signified their in- tentioa to withdraw from the canvass ‘The former re- tires gracefally from un office that he has held for over thirteom years; and tho latter removes to the City of Nuw York to follow the practice of his profession, and to withdraw for the present from the arenaof politica fhe former, wtio isa prudent, tragal man, has probably | saved a handsome ompetency from the emoluments 0: the different offiows h+ has so long enjoyed; and the lat- tor hus talemt aud industry enough to secure to himself an extensive and prodtable professional business, The annouricoment of the deciinature of Mr Flagg has been offisinily mady through the coluuasof the Eastern state Journal, and the Albany atias, wud Mr. Van Buren openty prociaim» his intention to take up his residence im the city of New York, We may. therefore, expect that other persons will be nomiaated for the offices now held by them. Fer the Comptrolersbip many names have been mentioned; among them Judge Dayton, late of the Eighth Circuit, Phowas Farrington, the pronent State Troasarer, Homan J. Redfield, of Genesee, and C ©, Cambrelling, ex-Member of Congress; and the fol lowing have besa named for Atterney General, Rufus W. Peckham, of Albany, Horatio Soymoar, of Utica, and James T Brady, of New York. The barn-burners will zvbably urge either Dudley D. Field of New York, or eter Cagger, of Albany, for the nomination. For Se- crstary of State, the aames of the present incumbent, Judge Bouton, of Herkimer, and that of Edward Sanford, &t present State Senator from your city, are spoken of. ‘The claims of the various candidates will be earnestly slvecated by their friends, and the nominations will be contested with greatepirit in the convention. by legal minds that there is no power in the constitution or laws authorizing an election of | Lieut. Governor, made vacant by the resignation of | Addison Gardiner on his election to the Court of Ap- als, ‘hac office will, therefore, be held by Sei selor. the President of the Senate, and Lieut, Governor pro tem., wotil a new election by the Senate, or until the next general election. <The whigs are no less active than the democrats; but While the democrats are determined upon healing all divisions by throwing bverboard the loading factionists and disturbers of the harmony of the party, the whigs are becoming more divided than ever. There is a pros- pect, however, of their uniting and succeeding at tho next election, if thay act wisely, and make good nomina- tious independent of such outside influences 2s sboli- tionisia, auti-rentism, &e. Among those who have been named for the comptrollerahip by the whigs, | would moation Samuel B. Ruggles, of New York. and the pre- sent Supreme Court Judge, Fred’ Whittlesey. B. Da vis Nuxon—who was one of the whig candidates for th Court of Appealx—is named for Attorney General, but it seems to be generally egnceded that Samuel Stevens, the prosent Adjutant Generl, will be the whig candi- didate, it he desires the nomination, notwithstanding he is Obnoxious to Weed, Seward, Greeley, ke Phe straggle for nomioations in both parties will be fires, but the people need not therefor complain, for in stich contests they are always provided with better men than when important offices are Siled by muans of deep, dark wad silent intrigue. It is of the utmost importance to both parties, and to the whole people, that the best men should be put forward, and we shull watch the pro- gress of events with great interest. Gov. Marcy has gone to Saratoga for a few days, for the improvement of his health. He looks pate, thin and haggard, and boars evident marks of severe illness, He intends visiting his native State, Massachusetts, before his return to Wasbingtow. His object is to visic his aged mother, who is bocoming very feeble from extreme age, and who, it is apprebeuded, canaot long remain upon the stage of Life.
