Ww. Puttapenrnta, August 22. Destructive Fire and Loss of Life. bout 11 o'clock last evening, a most disastrous fire courred in the upper part of the-city. The back part of the brewery of Robert Newlen, fronting on Bread street, and the adjoining sugar house of George Broom, were both consumed, But the destruction of property ‘was nothing compared with the loss of life and the inju- ry which was caused to the patriotic firemen, who fiad assembled to extinguish the flames, A wall of the sugar house, six stories high, fell upona rear building attached to the brewery, the roof of which was crushed, and the front wall falling outwardly, epyeloped nearly all the firemen at work mpon the Reliance and Fairmount en- gines. Of the men at work on the former, Andrew But- ler and Mr. Hines were killed, and twelve others were more or less crushed and burned by the hot bricks. The following are their names:—John Delaney. aged twenty, his arm splintered, head cut, and back badly burned. Wm. Roberts, aged 26, and James Brown, aged 25, both of New York, had their heads cut, bruised about the head, and serious burns about their bodies. ‘The above were conveyed to the hospital; the follow- ing being less seriously hurt, were taken to their several homes;-— Wm Fitzpatrick, John and Augustus Stulb, Wm. Masters, Frederick Baum, Lowden 8. Carroll, Andrew Duffee, very severely hurt. Of those at work on the Fairmount, Riebard Wellington had his leg broken; Pe- ter Crouse was badly bruised about the legs, and he re- ceived a severe cut on the head. Elias Reed was dread- fully injured, having hiasecull fractured. shoulder bro- ken, aud badiy bruised about the head and face The two last named were taken to the hospital. and the phy- sicians there have very little hope of Mr. Reed, George Reese, Geo, Brooks, and Jno. C, Shilling were also injured. William Kaghler bad his arm very much lacerated George Warnhouser and Samuel Hall were much hurt. There are other a said to be missing, and fears are entertained that the pile of bricks covers their re- ins. There are so many rumors afloat, it is hard to arrive at the truth, but.the injuries to the above named persons are undoubtedly correct A mau named Wain- wright, is said to have been also Killed. Tue Corroy Wonm.—We have aletter before us from Lafayette county, Miss. which speaks of the appear- ace there ofthe army worm. The writer is confident it isof the sume family that laid waste the crops last ear; but it does not sonfine itself to the cotton plant, ut eats the crab grass, corn blades, &c., as well as cot- ton. They are exovedingly voracious, and the writer of the letter says thst you can go into the fields where they may be, and distinctly hear them at work @ the sound being not unlike that of a multitude of vin engaged upon a building. We have witnessed, personally, its fatel effects on the farm of « gentleman near Chulahoma, and were informed by eye-witnesses, that there were other plantations in the neighborhood which had already suffered far more severely—in fact, that the cotton crops on them were utterly hopeless.
