BY THE MAIL ‘Wasnixaron, August 11, 1847. Affairs in Mexico—The Future. Letters from Monterey and Tampico, received in this city last evening, dated as late as the 26th ult., contain no mention of the occupation of the capital by Genera Scott's army, nor of any engagement on the march thither. Rumor, in this instance, as in the case of the battle of Buens Vista, may have but anticipated the truth. There is nothing at all improbable in the state- ment. Nothing has been received here as yet, caloulated to dissipate the very tedious uncertainty existing. The anxiety for news is hourly becoming more painful and absorbing. ‘The papers will send General Taylor to San Luis. He will not go, however, unless the present views and pur- poses of the administration should be changed by future circumstances. The general, in his last despatch, dis- suaded the Secretary of War from erdering an advance on San Luis, although his own inclination is for active service. In military point of view he deemed it unad- visable. Had Gen. Taylor advised the step, the Secre- tary of War would have ordered an advance, as the lat- ter has not only given the general the largest discretion since the commencement of the war, but has almost in- variably issued his orders for the direction of that column of the army in accordance with the general’ views and suggestions. Noman in the country enter- tains w higher opinion of Gen, Taylor's military capa- city and gallantry, than Mr, Secretary Marcy. It is asserted that the volunteers under Gen. Scott's immediate command were discharged before the expira- tion of their term of service, in accordance with in- structions from the War Department. Such is not the fact. That step was taken by General Scott solely on his own responsibility. It waa kind and considerate, but unwise, No doubt had General Scott pushed on af- ter the annihilation of the Mexican army at Cerro Gor- do, he could have taken the capital without the shed- ding of one additional drop of blood. But that is not. the only mistake committed during the war; and it would be invidious to hold up one alone to gensure, where there have been many equally desecying repre. hension. The question now assumes unusual interest—what course will be adopted in case Mexico refuses to make peace after her capital shall have yielded to our arms? ‘The present views of the administration hold the city of Mexico as the terminus of offensive operations, No ulterior course has been resolved upon ; yet I have rea- son to believe that in such an event the capital and all the other important cities, on the seaboard and on the frontier, now in our possession, will be garrisoned, The main body of the army will remove to some healthy and secure position, and the revenues of the country will be made to defray the expenses of this armed establish- ment. GALVIENSIS. Wasminaron, Aug. 11, 1847 No News Yet. No news yet. Gen, Scott's communication supposed to be cut off to Vera Cruz, so that he will have to eut through with his despatches with a foree of dragoons. Scott supposed to be in Mexico; but after a harder fight than reported, Peace expected; and people are begin- ning to bet on it. Ourown impression is that more men will be wanted, and that it would be judicious to give to General MeNeill the privilege of adding several New York companies ef volunteers to the district battalion gone dow, and to make it # brigade under his command. Even with peace, he would be of good service in explor- ing and surveying the route of the Tehuante io unless that canal is abandoned, as we shrewdly itis. But if not, he would be the man of the work. New York bas not had her share in this vas, and she ought to have chance, You may look out for news every day now, but beware also, in the meantime, of the bulls and the bears. Mexican news has its effect, upon the mocks, you know. Bautimonz, August 12, 1847, Off for the Sprints—Shooting Stars—The Heroine of Tampico—The Letheon— Markets, §c. ‘The steamboats and railroad cars are orowded with passengers this morning, all endeavoring to make their excape from the heated and confined air of the city, to & more congenial atmosphere. Largo numbers are en route for Cape May, whilst Piney Point, Old Point Com- fort, and the Virginis and Bedford springs come in for a large share of our moving population. ‘The shooting stars on Tuesday night were on a grand | soale in this vicinity. Between ten and eleven o'clock they rained down at a brisk rate, and the number of star agers were unusually numerous, Mra, Aon Chase, the heroine of Tam ico, will arrive in Baltimore this morning, and she of course, re- ceive a hearty reception.
