Navigation of the Ohio Places. Time. River. Wednesday, August 116 P.M. ‘The tendency of prices is downward. Several of the fancies fell off to-day a fraction, At the first board ‘Treagury Notes declined \ per cent; Farmers’ Loan, * ; Norwich and Worcester, %; Long Island, ; Stonington ‘4. Morris Canal and Harlem closed at prices current yesterday. East Boston advanced 3/. At the second board Harlem improved } per cent, | Norwich and Worcester <. Long Island and Harlem | closed at prices ruling at the first board. There were large sales of Harlem at the second board, and the mar- ket closed moderately firm. ‘The stock market appears to be ina very unsettled state. All the elements of apeculation are in a very fa- vorable condition, and we see nothing calculated to give any immediate check to moderate inflation in prices. The money market being exceedingly easy, there are facilities at command to give an impetus to prices of a very decided character. The moderate movement going on, indicates, however, a cautiougness highly commenda- ble, and many @ desperate speculator may save himself from ruin by pursuing @ medium course. The third instalment of 10 per cent on the subscrip- tions to thecapital stock of the Hudson River Railroad, is payable during the month of August, Sales of this stock have been mide in Wall street within the past week at 88 per cent for full shares, being 17 per cent be- low par, a sacrifice which some, do doubt, resorted to, to get clear of the stock. This must be very pleasant to large subscribers at par. | ‘The annexed statement exhibits the quantity of cer- tain articles exported from Boston to foreign ports, for the week ending August 7th, distinguishing the destina- tion and the extent of tho shipments to each country :— Commence oF TH Port or Boston—Wrexy Exronrs To Africa,—Corn meal, 60 bbls ; flour, 1,500 bb! lathe, 10,000; tend, 2.270 tbe.; domesties, 80,915 yar 750; 10,000, Bie teas pn flour, 3,118 bbls. South American markets, particularly those in the Pacific, re- quire the bulk of our shipments. Calcutta comes next. At this rate of increase, our shipments of these manu- factures, will in a few years be immense. We are rapid- ly ousting foreign manufactures, that come into compe- tition with our domestio cotton goods from these markets, and as our facilities for manufacturing these goods in- crease, we shall interfere more with those of a foreign description. It must be borne in mind that we haveim- mense markets within our own limits to supply, before we send any abroad. The aggregate exportation of breadstuffs from Phila- delphia, from Jan. 1st to Aug. 1st, 1847, was as follows, viz: flour, 364,114 bbls; corn meal, 267,332 bbls.; rye flour, 16,381 bbls.; biscuit, 20,682 bbls.; wheat, 527,026 bushels; corn, 1,056,350 bushels. ‘Thereventue from customs at the port of Philadelphia, from the Ist of Dec. 1846, to Aug. Ist, 1847, was $1,907,010 30 against $1,706,417 28 for the corresponding period in the previous year, showing an increase this year of $200,593 02, It must be borne in mind that these amounts were collocted under two tariffs—one. of 1842, and the other of 1846. The importations under the tariff of 1846 must have been many per cent larger since Deo. 1846, than for the corresponding period the pre- vious year, under the tariff of 142, to have produced the above increase in the revenue, as the average rate ot duty under the tariff of 1846, ramgos about six per cent under that of the tariff of 1842. The gross revenue from the public works of Ponnayl vunia, during the month of July, this year, amounted to $182,842, against $145,507 for the same month last year, making the aggregate for the season, up to the Ist inst, $1,019,631 against, $711,576 for the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of $307,956 this year. We still adhere to the belief that the ‘net increase from the public works of that State, for the year ending Novem- ber 30, 1847, will exceed one million of dollars, or more than one half of the annual interest on the entire public indebtedness. It has been officially announced that after the pay- ment of the August interest, of two and a half per cent. on the debt of Pennsylvania, there was an unappro- priated surplus in the Treasury of $927,227 70 The amonnt of interest paid on the Ist inst., was $049,781 70. The temporary loan of $2 000 had been previously paid, and the revenues had been anticipated to the amount of more: than $20,000 from the banks. Had the Treasury depart- ment been free from the incumbrance of the loan of two hundred thousand dollars on the ist of Vebruary, there would haye been a surplus on hand the lat of August of more than half a million of dol- lars. About a dozen counties paid their quote of taxes in advanoe, to place the payment of the interest be- yond «contingency, This will probably never be re- quired again. The treasury is not only relieved from all embarrassments, but bas a surplus equal to more tap thirty-three per cent of the interest due next Feb- ruary The people of Pennsylvania may well be proud of the position their State now occupies in the financial world, as it has been reached by almost superhuman efforts, and at immense sacrifices. ARREST OF COL. FREMONT. Terrible Sufferings of the Emigrants, ENGLISH DESPATCHES, Zanesvitte, Ohio, Aug. 11, 1647 Some important intelligence has been received from California. Mosers. Shaw and Bolden arrived at St. Louis on the Sth inst., direct from Oregon. They met but little ait. culty on the route, ‘They left Frontier settlement on the Sth of May. Samuel Brannon was met at Fort Hall, and from him information to the 26th of May, from California, was ob- tained, Colonel Fremont had been arrested by Governor Kearny, for disobedience of orders, and ordered home for trial. Commodore Stockton is on his way home. ‘I'he Ameri- can fleet was still engaged in the blockade of Mazatlan, Acapulco, and other towns in Lower California, and our troops had been ordered in the same direction. Governor . Kearny would leave California, and reach home in September next Aflairs were very unsettled in California, ‘The emigrants to California and Oregon, were making rapid progress. ‘The party met Davidson's company at Big Sandy, and two others at Green River. The Mor- mons were met at the forks of Platte, with a large train of wagons, on their way to Culifornia, and the twelve apostles were mot at Fort Bridges, ‘The Mormons would Proceed only to Sult Lake this season. Messrs, Shaw and Bolden add to the horrors of the Previous accounts received relating to the suffering wimi- Gration parties which failed to reach California last win- ter, Seventy-five have perished by freezing or starva- tion, The survivors subsisted upon the dead bodies of their companions. ‘The families of Reed and Donner reached the Suttier’s Settlement in ‘safety, after enduring incredible sutfer- ings, Commodore Drake, of the British ship Modeste, is on his way to the States. In the first district, although there were two demo - cratic candid: running, there is no doubt, from the ‘aspect of the returns, that Linn Boyd is re-elected. In dixtricts 2 and 3, lately represented by McHenry and Grider, whigs, the contests are close, and doubttil, on account of the whig divisions. ¢ official count can alone determine the result. The seven other districts ave been carried by the whigs, as before reported. There is no doubt of the election of Green Adams, whig, in the Gth district, lately represented by John P. Martin. democrat. ‘Thus far, the whigs have gained the 6th and 10th districts ; and if they lose the 2d and 3d, the dele- gation in the next Congress tor Kentucky will stand the same as the last, MARYLAND. the Fifth Congressional District, of inated RK. Gen, Scott will scarcely have had over 12,000 men with him, if he moved from Puebla on the 15th July, and Mexico being eighty six miles distant, allowing 20 miles march a day, (which is good travelling for an army en- cumbered with heavy provision, munition and bag- gage train.) he could scarcely have reached the city without opposition before the 20th of July; but skir- mishings or a battle with the enemy, may have delayed him some days longer. Tt may be, however, that bye system of forced marches like thone of Santa Anna to Buena Vista, almost without parallel in the whole annals of war, it may be that Gen. Scott did reaeh and enter the city of Mexico om the 17th or 18th, as reported ; but that report is yet to be confirmed. Within a day or two we have at Coleman’ eisinger, U. §. N.; Capt. Alexr. Slidell MeKer ; Lieut. Charlies G. Hunter, of Al jurgeon Sharp, U.S. N.; and M. R. Patrick, U. 8. Meu Wasninaron, Aug. 10, 1847 The Next Congress—The Old National Theatre. ‘The next Congress will be unquestionably the mort tutensely interesting and exciting of any similar assem blage at this capital for many years, perhaps since the establishment of the government geperal, in theevent of peace, the city will be thronged with the officers and so! diers of the returning armies from Mexico, Im ony event we may expect an unusual influx of strangers, and a long ression A theatre would pay. The old National was burnt out on the — after the last inauguration, March 5, 1846 | ‘The shell 8 still there, and the inride works could be pu: nd the thousands 6: ‘trangers that will bein town. We hope that the scheme will be carried out. It will contribute largely to att: aot strangers to town; and thus add to the money to be ax- pended in the city @ very large amount.
