waters. The store-houses on the lake shore, and in the interior of the Western States, are, notwithstanding the immense qusatity forwarded, groauing under the accu- mulation of breadstuils, aud there is norelief, Every vessel on the le kes that would float, has beenput into re- quisition; freigts have ruied very high, and the greatest activivy has prevailed, and still the surplus of the old crops hes not been forwarded. Millions of bushels of corn and other grains are yet in flest hands, and likely to re main there, for the want of facilities to get it to mar- ket. ‘The new crop is aow harvested, and can be brought into market, in the event of an active demaud spring- ing up, at onee; bat the crops of the Western States, as general thing, do not come forward until the spring after harvest—the fall receipts! being the surplus of pre- vious crops. ‘The demand for vessels on the Western lakes this year, will, without doubt, give a great impetus to the construction of new ones between this and next spring. ‘The prospect, at prosent, is, that everything that wil! float will be wanted on the lakes next year. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the amount of lands entered at the land office at Mineral Point, Wisconsin Territory, and the amount of money received for the same, from Jan, Ist to July Ist, 1847:— rs RRITORY. ‘ALES oF Puntic Rampe—Wiscon Oy for ry January. February... 67,385.39 $86,757 18 Nearly the whole of these entries was in May and June, This shows the progress of emigration. A large portion of the above lands will give a crop this fall, and we may safely say that the whole will give a crop in 1848, The whole Western country is filling up at this rate, and emigrants arriving a few years hence will be compelled to locate in some of the new territories. In- diana and Illinois are rapidly filling up with the most aulstantial classes of emigrants, and the choice public lands of those States will soon be entirely appropriated. ‘The completion of the public works of internal improve- ment in Indiana and IIlinois, will give an impetus to the agricultural resources of those States, greater than ever dreamed of, and the revenue from these works will ex- ceed all estimates,as much as those of other States have. The Buffalo and Mississippi Railroad Company is the name of a company chartered by the Legislatures of Ohio and Indiana, and which, when completed, will form a connecting link between Toledo, at the western ex- tremity of Lake Erie, and Chicago, on the southwestern point of Lake Michigan. The whole length of the road, according to a survey, will be 232 miles, and it will run in nearly a straight course through the whole northern tier of counties in Ohio and Indiana, across the neck of the peninsula formed by Lakes Huron and Michigan. According to the report of the engineer who surveyed the route, the whole cost cf the road is estimated at $5,215,000, * The amount of tolls collected at Oswego for the fourth week in July, forttwo years, was as annexed :— Canan Commence oy Osweco—Tours Receiven. 1817, , Total Aug. 1. $113,532 83 1816.0 69,756 74 ‘The exports by canal from the opening of navigation to August Ist, of flour, wheat and eorn, for three years have been— Exvorts via Canau, 1817. 1945. 0 Flour, bb 19 Wheat, bu: 4X 17,702 Com, 236,831 5.031 ‘The increased shipments of these three lvading arti- cles have been very great, partionlarly of corn. Mr, Buchanan—Peace Rumors. ‘The numerous reports in circulation representing Mr. Buchanan's visit to Old Point as connected with a set- tlement of our difficulties with Mexico, are wholly groundless. Mr. Buchanan has long contemplated a visit to Bedford Springs, and would have gone there, but for the consideration that he would be more scoessible at Old Point, in the event of the receipt of intelligence demanding his presencein Washington. He would have preferred having gone after the receipt of some definite news from Mexico; but the business of the de it was “up,” and the opportunity of @ slight was not to be neglecte: It is said that, previous to Mr, Buchanan’s Government was in possession of intelligence favorable to the prospect of peace. ‘This is not the fact, Poence ip in so much as the published accounts may be di fa- vorable. The Government was not then, nor is it upto this hour, in possession of any int nce favorable to peace, further than what has been laid before the public. On the other hand, no authentic information has been received that would lead to a disbelief in the favorable accounts already received. In fact, for more than « week no despatches have been reovived calculated to bt ased the uncertainty created by the published in- gence, Wasuinaron, Aug. 9, 1847, Peace, ‘The city’s taken, hey? No news of his death or capture. What will he do? Will he not fall on the back track, and cut off reinforcements, trains, &e.? May he not even re-capture Puebla, Perote, Jalapa and Vera Cruz? Not likely. Hardly sense enough for that. What will Scott do in Mexico? Dictate a peace ? or stay there til he is eaten up by an insurrection? Don’t know ; at all events, if Scott is really in “ the halls of the Montesu- mas,” another point is gained to the consummation of peace ; and the management of “ Old Soup” has been elegant, and regular as clock-work, from Lobos to the Capital. But I'll go a cool fifty on it; Polk will be astonished to hear that Scott is not eaten up alive.— Now, what do you eay tothat? I tell you, sir, that Jimmy Polk is a small customer. Look at ‘the elections. Gaines—Major Gaines, by thunder ! elected to Congress, and the Kentucky fellows don’t knoW where he is. He may be in chains in Mexico, somewhere.” “Oh, git out! Tho tariff of 46? No! The sub-treasury! Very little said about the sub-treasury. The Mexican war, in the ab- stract? No! Intheconcrete? Yes. Howin the con- crete? Why, by being in the convex on the Lieutenant General projét, which was defeated. But that won't cover the case. What will, think you! The spoils ?— the seven loaves and two cod-fish?
