We are sorry to learn that an altercation took on Tuesday evening last, between seme of the zens of Lafayette and portion of Capt. Hiram Fairchild’s company of Mounted Volunteers. From what we can learn, it seems that the volunteers were drinking at a place near where the steamer New Orleans was moored Some of the citizens made remarks at which the volun teers took umbrage, and a general fight ensued. ‘The affray ina little While became so violent that the Governor of the State, on being applied to by Mayor Bouligny, was on the eve of calling out a detachment of the Lowians Legion for the purpose of quelling the riot. Luckily, however, the mob was put down without having recourse to any such serious measure. During the affray, a per- son named George Brown, a private belonging to Capt Fairchild’s company, bad his skull split open with an &4xe. and another soldier was also seriously wounded.— N. O. A run calling himself Harris Bell, has been arrested, and is now in the county jail, charged with the murder of Mrs. Williams, wife of Rev. Gershom Williams, of Scott township, in this county. Mrs. Williams left her residence on Sunday’ morning last, on foot and alone, to attend a Sabbath school at a school house about a mile distant. Soon after, her friends proceeded to the same place, and not finding her there, alarm was felt for her safety, anda search made. Her body was found in the woods near the road, beating indications that she had met a violent death. Bell had been straggling about the vicinity for several days; had been at Mr, Wil- liams’s thai morning, and suspicion attached to him. He was arrested, and: confessed having assaulted his ictim for a villanous purpose, and choked her to death, —Honesdale, Pa, Herald. ‘The office of the Mechanic and Agricultural Associa- tion in Woodburn, Mass, was broken open on ‘Thurs- day night and robbed ef $3,000 in money and sundry valuable papers: ‘Phe ‘rogues who committed the rob- ery foreed open the doors lending to the office, and ob- tained access to the money, &o. by blowing open the safe with gunpowder. On the 16th ult. deputy sheriff Berchfleld, of Saline county, was killed by the older of two brothers named Allen, upon whom he attempted to serve a writ. As the Allens had threatened that they would not be arrested, the sheriff summoned a porse, and, entering the house, attempted to-execute the process, when one of the Al- Jens, both of whom were armed, lowered his rifle and shot the sheriff through the body, Hlling him upon the spot. Upon this, one of the posse, Mr, Low, drew a pistol and Killed Alien, while the younger Allen fired upon Low, Which was also fatal. | Some one of the posse then shot the surviving Allen, the ball passing through his arm, shattering the bone, and into his breast. ‘The wound in his case was not mortal, and he made his escape, but the officers of justice are in pursuit of him, and he will no doubt be overtaken. Viorent Sroam.—-One of the most” violent northeasterly storms that we have experienced this season, commenced, last evening about 8 o’clock.— ‘The wind was exceedingly high ugh the night, and the trecs on the Common and Granary burying ground have suffered considerably. Considerable damage was done to the crops in the surrounding country, and fruit trees in various places were almost entirely denuded of their fruit. We have heard of no damage done to the shipping, though we are inclined to believe that it must have sultered, The steamer John Marshall which left here last evening for Portland, arrived there safe at 84 o'clock this morning, as we learn from the Merchants’ Isxchange Books. Naval Affairs.—Brazil.— Navy Clothing. The frigate Brandywine sails for Rio Janeiro on the 17th inst. She takes out eleven of the Midshipmen who passed their examination last week at Annapolis. On their arrival at Rio, they, with @ portion of the crew, are to be transferred to the Ohio, which will immediately Proceed to the Pacific station. The press teems with alleged acts of aggression by the Brazilian authorities on American trading vessels. These reports are doubtless exaggerated. There is no positive information on the subject, no despatches having been received from our minister, Mr. Wise, for a long time past. From the imperfect information received, it would appear that in Brazil there are certain ports, no ports ofentry,at which American whalers have been inthe habit of stopping to supply themselves with provisions and other trifling necessaries, for which they would ex- change a small quantity of oil. For the last twenty years this practice has been winked at by the govern- ment of Brazil, though its legality has never been formally recognized, ‘The truth will, probably, turn out to be that in consequence of the recent misunderstand ing! in relation to the affair of Lieutenont Davis, the Brazilian authorities have become more than usually vigilant, and that some whaling vessels have been seized for entering and trafficing in ports not of entry. The seizure of vessels so illegally trafficing, is perfectly legitimate, provided duo notice had been given by the Brazilian authorities that the practice so long tolerated should be no longer countenanced. Otherwise it will be difficult to prove that a snare was not intended. Nothing could work better than the system on which clothes are at present furnished to the sailors in the navy. The Bureau of Provisions and Clothing adver- tises for proposals for furnishing an amount of clothing of the best materials. ‘The contract is made with the lowest bidder, and the Secretary of the Navy inspects the clothing, comparing it with the standard pattern, any inferiority to which will cause its immediate rejec- tion. In the employment of hands to make the clothes, the Navy Department has no concern. That is the contractor's business, The clothes, after being approv- ed, are sold at wholesole prices to the sailors, who thus obtain the very best article at the very lowest price. There could not be devised a more complete or more equitable system. ‘The money received for clothing this year serves to purchase clothing for next year, and thus the government is at no expense, whilst the poor sailor gets better value for his money than he would by pur- chasing elsewhere. What an improvement on the old system, under which the purser was a slop seller, and the poor sailor was fleeced out of a treble price in the purchase of every article. GALVIENSIS. Wasuixorox, August 6, 1847, Look Out, A telegraphic despatch to-day has Scott and Santa Anna in the immediate proximity of a battle. Thenext news will, of course, be Santa Anna’s defeat; but how much more, “nous verrons. Col. Baker says that the} reported destruction of wo- men and children in the bombardment of Ver@Cruz, is & great exaggeration of the truth. Not more than one tenth of a thousand were slain by the American bomb shells. Lamentable at that; but still better than a thou- sand. ‘The intrepid Colonel also says Santa Anna’s country seat at El Encerro was not destroyed, as has been re- ted; but that to the very last a guard was kept over to ensure It from pillage, and the property from muti- to hear it; for it of ‘A North-Easter has sot in to-day, after a fesbion. which will make the salt water amusements at Ca May and Old Point, appear to be perfectly absurd. ‘Wasuinoton, August 6, 1847, Col, Lane, The official report, (with the necessary explanations for its non-appearance heretofore.) of Col. J. H. Lane, showing the conduct of his Indiana volunteers, at the hard fought fight of Buena Vista, comes out im last night's Union, under the endorsement of Mr. Amos Lane, father of the Colonel. The old gentleman came on here for the express purpose of setting this matter right, and we are glad of it, because it throws stills little more light upon the subject, and leaves us to the con- clusion, that the Indian exhibited tl troops under ‘cops that #0 iy ther, must have been exclusively the Col. Bowl It appears, however, that the the ade Illinois and Kentucky ti pute for many hours, and though nearly all hands did their duty, it was, according to Old Zack himself, Bragg’s battery that “SAVED THE DAY.” Wasninactor, August 6, 1847. No News. We have no news! It has been along time since we have heard direct from Gen. Scott, but we have no fears. He has the men, and they hi the spirit to overcome all tance—to take Mexico and to hold it. But peace—peace, what are the chances for peace? “ Watchman, tell us of the night, What its signs of promise are.” Tell us, good watchman, for we went to know. The watchman himself isin quandary. Ie can’t tell, for the life of him; he don’t know. But it is thought if the Mexicans assent to look at the terms of Mr. Trist, they will ask to consider them, and considering them that they will accept. It is thought that they have assented to examine the skeleton treaty ot th rival made History will approve the mission of Mr. Trist- posterity will endorse it.
