Taylor should stand whe Nee Piles id where he 1e—Proopecte As we gavo out a month ago. it Is now admitted by officers fresh from Monterey, that Gen. Taylor will not be in readiness to march upon San Luis Potosi before the Ist September. Suppose, thon, that ho crosses the desert of Encarns- cion and Salado, to San Luis, what will hegsin? He | will have extended his line fiom Saltillo upwards of 800 miles; and # desert of that distance, as inhospitebleas the desert of Sahara, will be between him and his de- pots. What ishetodost San Luis? The city will be deserted by the Mexican troops. Urrea and Canales are hanging along the Rio Grande. And if Gen. Taylor can do good at San Luis, his object must be to push on to the main column at the city of Pegs reducing the towns onthe way But Saat | is to oe by this operation? There is no earthly use in the march to 6am Luis under these views of the case, and we are much mistaken if General Taylor goes there at all. Still, the United States semble, and find Scott holding the Socerese mag of the hionte. zumas by force of arms, and the Mexicans indignant the mention of peace. What, then? The Congress of the United States will adopt the plan of Gen. Taylor, Mr. Calhoun, Commodore Perry, and others, by defining a boundary, falling beck upon it, and occupying it until Mexico shall assent to acknowledge it, including the occupation of her ports in the fnterim. But Mexico may open her eyes in the meantime, and guess that it would be safer to make & bargain while it may be had, tha finally to submit toa boundary which may include more of her territory th than would be now demanded. Wasuinaron, July 28, 1947. The War News. The interest increasee—the anxiety inoreases—the doubt increases, and the immediate prospect of a pesce, in a corresponding ratio, decreases. We had music in the Eastern Park of the Capitol this afternoon ; and among tho distinguished persons present we were glad to see Mr. Buchanan. Thore he was, with, as usual, a bevy of ladies around him. He is the most popular old bachelor we have ever known, and he de- server to be. He thinks that we are going to have peace, no doubt. He has, we suppose, great fuith in the over- tures of Mr. Trist, and the three millions, taken to- gether with the uniform defeats of Mexico, and her com- plete inability to help herself. But we are not quite so sanguine on that score, We rather apprebend that moro volunteers will be wanted before ® peace is per- suaded out of the Maxisens. “Bantimons, 2, July 29, 1647, The Recent Outrages—The Law won't reach them— Ship Launches ~The Markete—-Stock Sales, $e.
