They ary commanded by General Valencia, who it was reported would join Santa Anna with nine thousand regulars, Gen, Wool's troops were in good health. Gen. Taylor has one hundred end twenty days’ ra- tions, eight hundred wagons and two thousand mules, waiting to move forward. His force amounted to twen- ty-nine hundred men. Gen, Urrea, it is positively stated, was at Victoria ro- cently, and arrested the Governor of that place and sent him to the oapital, charged with treason against the government. It is also said that Canales’ son has been shot by him on account of treasonable correspondence being found in his possession, The Department of Tamaulipas has been put under contribution for a large sum of money. Gen, Urrea de- parted to enforce its collection with the bayonet. It was reported that he ioft Victoria to attack Tampf- co, but not credited. Caravajal {s reported moving all over the country, let ting few traders escape, The intended march of the Mexicans from San Luls | against General Wool, seems to have been abandoned, It was rumored at San Luis Potosi on the @th, that Gen. Scott had marched from Puebla, but countermareh- ed onlearning that resistance would be offered, when BY THE MAILS. Wasuixoton, July 97, 1647. From Mrzico. Lieut. If we mistake not, Mr. Cave Johnson's splendid carriage (wonder how he ever came to buy Kuch a costly affair?) went over th't way ; but the Postwaster General himself seldom out.’ Delightful day. {trained half the day yesterday, aod neurly all nigh, after the Weet India fastion. The day is delightful, Wasuixaton, July 97, 1847. How is this? Acurious communication appears in the Intelligencer of this morning, from which it appears that the Rev Mr. M’Calla, of the Church Presbyterian, and brother of the second Auditor of the Treasury, testifies :—That hu asked for a chaplaincy in Mexico of the President—that he hada conversation with the President, and that in that conversation the President declared that his object in sending Father Rey and Father M’Elroy (of the Catholic church) as chaplains to the army, was to em- ploy them as spies in the enemy's country. Not @ bad idea ; but if either of ead priests were given to under- stand thus much, and with this object penetrated be- yond the picquets of the army, they deserved to have their throats cut, wherever the Mexican \d catch them. Would either Father Rey or M joy acce it such mission? Did they so understand the case? We think not. But it appears the Mexicans 60 understood it, else why did they butcher Father Rey? Did they get hold of any official facts? We don’t know—we aay; butit is mysterious business snd no mls- Wasninoton, July 27, 1847 Georgetown College—Rittenhouse Academy, We attended the exercises of the commencement of jeorgetown College to-day, A numerous and intelli- gent auditory filled the chapel, and the compositions and their recitation, as also the music of the Philharmonic Society, were highly creditable to the young men. The annual address of the Philodemic Society, by Mr. Tho- mas J. Semmes, was “American to the back bone,’ as an old gentleman expressed himself; and the orator contended for the intelligence and practical education of the men of the South, in the very teeth of the con sus of 1840, with regard to mere book learning, Still, we should preter that at least every voter in the country could decipher for himeelf the names upon his ticket. The valedictory of Mr. Longstreth was neat and appropriate, although it did not leave that {impression upon the mind of the stranger of the valedictory at Chapel Hill; but the scenes at the North Caroline Commencement stand by them- selves; and it would be unfair to bi any other like proceedings jnto comparison with them, in thy matters of interest, pleasure, picturesqueness and romance, And we hereby take occasion to say to“ the Dis,” * forwar. and to Miss Nancy, take good care of them, madam, if you love us.
