By the extension of the telegraph we are now in oom- munication with Richmond, from which oity our des- patches will hereafter be forwarded, thirty hours im advance of the mail, ~ mooning Wasuinaton, July 24, 1847, James K. Polk. The President of the United Staves is constitutionally an industrious man. Generally, it is your lean men who are the most inveterate workers. We might cite Jack- son, Wellington, Brougham, Guizot, Clay, Calhoun, Walker, and others, as examples. But, on the other hand, there are the cases of Napoleon, Taylor, Webster, Benton, Buchanan, and others, men in good condition, whose lives present the same evidences ef untiring as- siduity to business, to say nothing of Cass, (who is rather what the farmers would call grass-bellied than fat) Dixon H. Lewis (who is a bona fide fat man,) and others, Still, we think the balance is in favor of the leaner sort, Cassius, Cesar, Hannibal, Scipio, Suwarrow, Prince Eugene, Talleyrand, Metternich, Bolivar, and an junumerable multitude of active business fellows, may be clasted among the lean kine. ‘The Popes of Rome, and the Emperors of China, have been, almost without an exception, fat men; and thelr lives, “ If anotent tales be true, Nor wrong those holy men,’? Have been as uniformly quiet, luxurious, voluptuous monotoenous. The wives of the Moors are fat, indolent and luxurious. We have but the the examples of Napo- leon and Louis Philipps, to prove that men are not gormandizers, or at least devoted to the goed things of the table, and as choice in their selections of @ cool Ld in appointing their official subordinates. And we hold this will be without except: excepting the emascula- ted attaches of Oriental s los.) thut where there is a surplus of adipose or oleaginous matter, the animal preponderates over the intellectual man, however strong the intellectual grasp and capacity of such man may be. The case of the illustrious Falstatt is a striking instance in proof of this hypothecate. Your burgomasters of Amsterdam are notorious for their abdominal rotundity not more than for their’ proverbial somnolence and tor- pidity. They eat, sleep and grow fat. ‘The ente: ining Arabs of the desert, on the other hand, are lithe an long. Our aldermen are proverbially fat, while our law- ers are characteristically thin. ‘The one class part largely of good dinners, the others subsist uy the at- mospheric sustenance of the law. Your cooks and but- chers are fut; while your editors, men of thought and constant labor, are a3 attenuated as John Tyler. Therefore, we consider that we have made out astrong argument that, between your fat and lean men, the lat ter class, in all ages, in all countries, under all govern- ments, in every capacity, and in the achievement of all great results, bave been the working bees of the hive, the builders of cities, empires, systems. political and re- ligious, the propagators of revolutions, and the great agents in every department of the work of progress. James K. Polk, President of the United States, is a lean man. Our argument in favor of the tribe presents in his behalf the strongest vindication, His whole history corroborates the postulate that for a man to be thin, with @ good living at his command, is prima facte evi- dence that he isa man ofindustry. Such is the his- tory of Col. Polk. At college he was an example of dill- gence in his studies. In his subsequent career, es] cially upon the stump in Tennesses, his competitor had to rise early and travel hard to keep paco with him dur- ring the day. A half dozen stump speeches of an hour or two each, and forty or fifty miles rido on horseback, were an ordinary day’s work for « July electioneoring excursion. His recent holiday visits to North Carolina and the Eastern States, we can bear personal testimony, were the severest labor to his fellow travellers, who were mere lookers on at the oppressive vo icat and amount of holiday duties imposed upon him. ‘The time of the President is arranged and classified with the rigidness of the business hours, and half hours for meals in the factories at Lowell, where the looms and operatives work as a general system of machinery. Go to Lowell—step into one of those great milis—seluct one of the thousands of the fair daughters of the North, who are there employed, as an example. Observe her attention to the loom—bher face may indicate all the vir- tues id high and amiable traits of the true American but in the mill, and the mill going, and at ber active loom, her eyes have no expression, save the ex- pression of total abstraction, She looks ao animated piece of machinery, as careless of your intrusion and your fixed observation, as the loom ‘she is tending. For thirteen hours in the day she is thus cut off from all ex- change of thought and sympathy but with the mao that is before her. Yet in the intervals of the day, and in the short evening hour that she may steal from sleep, we doubt not she may oe found attractive from her in. telligence and sprightly conversation. and charm: from the vitality and expressivences that are diff over her features. May her happiness never be less. ‘The daily routine of the Vresident is under « some- what similar regulation as totime, He is up with the suo, even during the long duys of summer, and ahead of him in the winter. ‘hen he has to read over his morning letters, and then his breakfast follows, and the morning papers, then he receives his official visiters on official business, then the public in general, (it it be not cabinet day) « large proportion of whom call in relation to offices, from all parts of the Union, and from all partaot the world. Frequently an old friend will bore him for an hour or two about nothing at all, which is a great in- fliction, Like the factory girl, the President of the United States soon learns to g+ through the duties of the day with the mechanical stolidity and regularity of aspindle. He hears what you have to say, he anuwers it with brief politeness, he ‘turns his customer in waiting, and you are at leavi part. It may be, that from the force of & habit imposed upon him, he will amswer your appeal for an office, (if an ut- ter stranger) entirely to your satisfaction; but call the next day, and you may perhaps discover that he has ut- terly forgotten the previous interview, and remembers not ® word of the conversation at that time. Necessity has imposed the duty of dismissing trifles without » vhought, and office seekers are dismissed the more readily on the ground that it is not his duty to take care of their cases, but their own. The President has other matters to absorb his attention. Upon the more important question of the general po- licy of the administration, we believe that Col. Polk has administered: ist. According to his oath to the constitution. 2d. In consonance with his pledge to the Baltimore Convention, by ‘i In obedience to his obligations to the party elect- ing him. 4th. With a view to his personal popularity in the Pre- sidential catalogue. ‘Lo the first of these articles we may attribute the de- feat of the River and Harbor bill. ‘To the second, the tariff of °46, the resurrection of the sub-treasury, the demand for the whole or none of Oregon, and the war with Mexico. They were the offspring, not of Col. Polk nistration, but of the Baltimore Convention. To the taird consideration may be set down the dis- charge of all the ‘Tylerites, beginning with Mr. Calhoun; and to the fourth, the marked attention end untiring diligence to duty of the present incumbent, day and night, since the day of his inauguration, To the full extent we can conscientiously support the President upon this issue. As a man, Col. Polk is emphatically a republican, His enay, neighborly and communicative manner with the people at large, Is too natural assumed. His style of conversation when off duty is lively and agreeable; and his knowledge of the distinguished men of the ge- neration going out of power, makes him to a younger man edifying and instructive, Heis fond of agvod anecdote, and will laugh at it like an bonest man, with his mouth wide open, He is yet dignified without osten- tation; and with ail apparent conciliation of temper, is rigid and inflexible in his opinions and determinations. He will notsutfer long an unnecessary encroachment up- on his time, and if you don’t leave him when your busi- ness is concluded, he will perhaps have « foreign minia- ter in the next room demanding his immediate attend- ers, expand the ch tioa to the lua brace, will be able to do more wor! orm.
