I perceive that Mrs. Bailey, the popular vocalist of this city, has been engaged at the Park Theatre, to sus- tain the celebrated songstress Madam Anna Bishop. She will doubtless prove a valuable aid, though of course her qualifications are well known in New York, She has, for several years past, quietly settled down in pri- vate life in this city, giving instruction in music, and sustains a high private character. She has performed two or three short engagements with the Seguins in Bal- ‘timore and Philadelphia, and was not the least of the at- tractions. Burton had a good house last night, and was weli re- ceived; “Speed the Plough” is to be performed to-night, with "good cast rovision trade of Baltimore is becoming immense. Ina aaltien to the large number of beef and pork pack- ing establishments ulready in this city, no less than four large British establishments are now fitting up, in which an extensive business will be transacted. rat 70,00 hogs were cured in Baltimore last year, and if the supply should be equal to the demand, more than double that umbes will be cured this year. | Within a few dey contracts have been made for 6000 hogs at $7 mn: dred pounds. A disastrous finale to # plundering expedition, oc- curred last night, in the vicinity of Commerce and Fifth street. One of the boarders in the Merchants’ hotel, looking from the window of his room, detected some person moving suspiciously about the rear of the ntores on Market street, and immediately guessing that a burglary was about to be attempted, gave the alarm to the watchmen. The burglar fled down Commerce street, on the approach of the guardians of the night, and entoring a yard, retreated into an outhouse, cover- ing the coss-pool. Immediately, cries of murder were heard to issue from this spot, but by the time the watch- men reached it, the ory had ceased. On examining about the vicinity to ascertain what had become of the fagitive, a large hole was discovered in the floor of the out-house alluded to, through which, it was at once concluded, the man had fallen, and been smothered in the filth. Measures were taken to recover the body, and an hour since it was hauled out, and an inquest is to be held upon it. The dec ras & color- ed man, but his wame is not yet known. ttempt at bu , which he was making when discovered, waa atthe rear of Messrs Lippencott, and Taylor's extensive clothing store, No. 200 Market street. Attempts had also been made upon adjoining stores. A friend tells me that the audionce at the Italian ope- Te last evening was unsur; both for brilliancy and numbers, which could hardly have been expected with the thermometer bordering on the nineties, Though this information is second hand and not from personal observation, it is doubtiess as correct as if | spoke from the card. A robbery was committed on Thursday night by two of the old Jack Shephard gang, and the perpetrators loft their mark, by writing with chalk, “Jack Shephard aud Blueskin caught yet.” The city papers afew days since incorrectly announced the arrest ofone of the same ing him asthe veritable Jack Shep- hard, Gnd ihe mi motive tar this writing was doubtless for the pr of screening the person caught. There can be no doubt that the real leader of the gang is still at large—in other words, that Frank is permitted to plun- der, though his brother John has been nabbed by the of- cers law.
