‘Wasninerton, The News of the Day. ‘The nows by the Cambria, telegraphed to this city yonterday, as far as regards the reduction in the price of flour, some little consternation among the specu- latofs; but a vast deal of pleasure among the consumers of bread generally, who are non-producers ot the article. One person of the first class had just sent off an order by mail to Winchester, for a supply of flour at a given price, and when the wires brought on the reduction, he stood for # moment aghast, and then dashed offwith the exclamations—* Who's got swift horses?—who’s got swift horses? Five hundred dollars lost, by G—.”’ A gentleman carried the news to the Irish laborers on the avenue. “Boye, flour’s fell in England two forty on ‘the barrel.” “How much, thir?” “Two forty.” “How much is that, sir?” “Two dollars and forty cents.””— “ And you say it’s fell that much to the barrel ’” “Yes, that's it” © Well, bless sir, for that same—they’ll bee all dle y of serine neat Saab tne hearty the ful man, his thonghts busy with ‘the e that fs dosoluting tho first. gem of the “ye understand that a patent is about being granted, for a most unique and valuable invention to the sugar growing interest, aud the refiners. ‘he article is that of st Pans, or an apparatus for boilin; Da sugar from cane juice. It is thought that the invention over the old plan will at least be 30 per cent of fuel. John Ben- son and James Day of Brooklyn, are the patentees. We understand that great preparations are being made at the west end, in view of the forthcoming mar- risge.of Ex-Governor Arnold of Rhode Island, to one of the fair daughters of Federal city. The Hon, Henry Wheaton is in town. Also Col. Chas. ‘A. May, one of Old Zack’s right hand men, all the way through from Corpus Christi to Buena gVista, Also Beak French, of the army, with a lame leg, a present from the Mexicans. ‘The knowing ones, or those who assume to know, what it is, impossible even to guess at, say that all our hopes of peace depend on Herrera’s election. We hold, that whether elected or not, there is a glimmering of a sign of a breaking upof the clouds, and that the prospect of peace begins again to brighten. It is said that Messrs. Corcoran & Ri, tinglargely in the soldiers’ bounty scrip, paying them cash for their warrants of 160 acres, to the amount of $100—a very profitable speculation; and proving at once most conclusively the truth of Col. Benton’s ap- ot saan of the speculators, if this report be ol] fact. are specula- Wasnincrox, June 17, 1847, sf case in point of the Bravery of the American Troops at Cerro Gordo—Another West Pointer. A well authenticated case of coolness and bravery on the part of @ young lieutenant of the mounted rifles, the corps that suffered so severely at Cerro Gordo, has come to our knowledge, which deserves to be recorded as a lasting memorial to the young officer in question. Lieut, D. H. Maury, graduated at West Point last summer, and was one of the first of his class to take they field. He marched from the Brazos to Monterey, thence to Tampico via Victoris, and was employed at, the slege of Vera Cruz as a light skirmisher, where he distin- ished himself, and was handsomely complimented by fis s commanding officer, Gen, Sinith. At Cerro Gordo. young Maury, as writes an eye-wit- ness, * was in the front of the fight on the 17th, and was 4n full view of the enemy’s Cerro Gordo fort, distant about 200 or 250 yards behind the fort, and still nearer the place where hie was standing was the enemy’s line of battle 12 or 1600 strong. For Jor 15 minutes ho the only officer or man exposed to their full view. The object which the gallant fellow had in thus exposing himself, for he was within musket range, was to collect party of skirmishers, and conduct them in the face of the enemy, down to a hollow, where a detachment of the 1st artillery had gained a position, and were in need of & support. Collecting together small party, he called to them to follow, and set out at a brisk run for the hollow be- low, to reach which he had to advance directly tewards the fort, and right in the face of its full fire. He had advanced only about fifty paces, when he received a musket ball in the arm, shattering it terribly, and com- pletely disabling him. Turning around for the back track, he found he fiad led where his men had hesitated to follow, wud that he was alone. ‘The way the musket balls whistled about me,” writes this officer to u friend, “was a caution.” My arm was angling like a rag—the rascals seemed to know they had hit me, and were determined to have me. After {had hobbled back a little way, one of the men jumped up from behind a tree, and told me to take his place, while he went te get somebody to carry me to the rear I dropped flat behind the tree, and though fainting from loss of blood and pain, was congratulating myself on having found ite shelter, when the Fort commenced firing a six-pounder at it, and’ before I could get help to get away, no less than four or five rounds were expended ex- pressly on my account.’ Lieut. Maury is a Virginian, and we understand that the citizens of Fredericksburgh—his native place—in- tend presenting him a sword in honor of his courage in the eld. All right, exactly the thing that ought to be done. Respectfally, & DOCTOR. Bartimone, June 19, 1847 Peace Rumors—Preparation for the Reception of the President—The Cambria’s News—Its Stunning Ef- feet on our Markets—The Stock Board, $c. We have rumors from Washington that important in- telligence has been received from Mexico, on which a long session of the cabinet was held yesterday. The in- teliigence is also said to be of a peaceable character. The Mayor of Baltimore received intelligence from Washington to-day, that President Polk would certainly reach this city, on his Northern trip, on Tuesday morn- ing next. He will be accompanied to Baltimore by Mra. Polk, who will start next, or Wednesday, morning, on a visit’ to the homestead, in Tennessee, The Council of the City appointed Committee this evening to act in conjunction with the Mayor in making arrangements to give the President a cordial greeting on the part of the city, in which the citizens will unite. He will remain here during Tuesday and Wednesday, and start tor Phi- ladelphia on Thursday morning, arriving in New York on Friday at noon. ‘The second edition of the Herald, with its detailed nc- counts of the Cambria’s news, has come to hand this morning, and is in great requisition by our commercial community, ‘The effect of the Cambria’s news on the markots has not boon fully developed yet, at leastin this city, Neither buyers nor sellers could agree on terms'yesterday, and as far as1 have been able to learn there was not an offer made to buy or sell. The news has in fact had a stun- ning effect, but business will doubtless eommence again this morning, as our merchants are now in possession of their despatches. It appears that 4. Samuel Rankis, @ ‘oung man of Baltimore county, had purchased farm of Mr. Amon Woodward, a short time since, and had made the first payment of $1.200 upon it, and on ‘Thursday morning rode up to take possession; Mr. Woodward, however, still resided on the premises, and perceiving Mr. Rankin in s feld, cameto him and stated that he did not wish to dispose of the farm now; that he had altered his mind about it. Whereupon, some words ensued, and.as Mr. Rankin was about to mount his horse, he was fired at by Mr. Woodward, receiving the charge of shot on the left side of the abdomen, causing @ severe and dangerous wound.
