Hi 1 the evening for prom wing the Cosmoramas, whi Mr. Kendall, the correspondent of the Picayune, ine ter from Julapa, bearing date the 22d of May, states that Mr. Trist, whois going on with the army, “ has had no personal communication with General Scott.” In one of my letters, written a few days after the depar- ted that he would bave no official communication with General Scott or any other officer. There cannot be stronger evidence of how fast a hold Lieutenant Colonel Fromont has on the public esteem, than the fact that his popularity survives the damage it has lately sustained from the weight of Mr Benton's egotistical laudations, The good conduct of a brave and accomplished officer like Fremont, requires no puffing to be appreciated bythe American people. The worst possible misfortune for a young officer, is thus to be continually thrust, ad nauseam, on public attention. This puffing is carried to a most ludicrous length, in a recent card put forth by My. Benton, relative to the misunderstand- ing between Stockton and Kearny, in which he asserts that the Californians travelled two days to surrender to Lieutenant Col. Fremont, because they had such confi- dence in him. The cause of the Californians having travelled two days to meet and surrender to Lieutenant Col. Fremont, is explained by the fact that Commodore Stockton had threatened to hang them as rebels, and they knew that by voluntarily surrendering to Fremont, they would escape the threatened punishment, as the latter had not heard of Stockton’s proclamation. 1 will venture to say that every body in the United States, ex- cept Mr. Benton, understood this perfectly. Although the board appointed by the Secretary of the Navy, to report upon the comparative merits of the va- rious patented floating docks, gave the preference in their report to the balance dock, still they report that none of these inventions is tree from great imperfections. ‘They state that the best of these docks will require so much annual repair as to be actually renewed every fif- teen years, and the patentees themselves admit that in twenty-five or thirty years the expense pf repairing the docks will amount to their original cost. From a consl- aeration of this report, the conviction Is irresistible that Congress committed a great oversight in authorising unsubstantial works. Navy will doubtless to carry out the will notwithstanding the evidence before him, obtain- ed from an unexceptionable board of examiners, that the public interests will thereby suffer. the many proofs of the utter incapacity for business, of the twenty-ninth Congress. I trust the work will not be #0 fur advanced by next December, that it will be too late to correct this blunder. ‘ton will be found all mission 123¢ cents. Concert commences at 8 o'clock.
