Wasninaton, June 12, 1847. Gen, Taylor, the Whigs, and the next Presidency. ‘Aw in the chureht Presbyteriam, so it isin the, whig church, there are two divislons—the old hard-headed biue legs, and the liberals, or radicals, or progressives.— Tho former musters the old orthodex wire-pullers, and all that sort of politicians, who look back instead of lookingfforward, Your new school whigs muster pretty * much the entire rank and Sie of the party—the active and enterprising spirited fellows whose eyes ate open to what is going on in the world, and who manage, by con- stant vigilance and activity to keep up with the momen- tum of the age Weil. sir, your old school whigs, the old hunkers, the Jook back clique, still lingering around the ruins of that national bank, and internal improvements, and still, it | 8 you please, vainly dreaming of the restoration of Henry Clay and the Ameriean system to the undivided control of the party—these eld fellows are consi- erably put out at the spontungous effervescence over the country in favorof Zack Taylor. Inflexible inthetr old notions, untaught, even by the avalanche of x affect to believe, that this *spor- .”” kindle from the military glories General Taylor, wilt dle out in edvance of tha.zegular convention, and that then your old cordwainers will name their man, and that the whole party, from Dan to Dearshoba, from Mount Libanos to the Dead Sea, which is tho great Salt Lake in the desert basin of California, wiliraly upon him in enthusiastic obedience to the ukuse of the Baltimore conclave ‘These old bell-ringers expect, as Senator Archer says, “thay expect what!’ That the jealousy of the north, aguinsta southern candidate, will be death to the clamor that the Wilmot proviso, though de- ated in Congress, is still the paramount, tantamount. catamount question in the north—thut Calhoun’s re brand resolutions coupled with the adhesion of ths Calhoun men to the fortunes of Taylor, are equiva- Jent to & direct iasue between.the North and the South, ch the north will be ent! aud unanimous to resist, They are pleased, are the old whig hunkers, at Ben tons letter, Us am ingenious thing. The appeal that the North have had only one democratic President for sixty years, aud he only for one term, must, peradven- ture, be fatal to the Southera slavery coalition between the ‘whigs and the Calkoun men upon Gen. Taylor Suppose, now, that the whigs nominate John McLean in convention, and that the democrats select Gen. Cass, and the South stand off, and. nofens volens, ran General ‘Taylor—what is the calculation? It is this: That Cass’s YoUw on the Wilmot proviso, last gession, in the Senate, will kill him inthe North; that the Calhoun men and Sa zuek wil snub him in the South; and that MoLean will ut least, in any event, go into the House, with a majority of the electoral votes sufficient to commend his election. th here-—thias tis, with the disastrous com- pounding o! fore ‘ties, as a warning against The repetition of that game. ii But the old bunkers of the whigs expect better things than even this. ‘They want no concessions with houn men; no compounding onthe tariff question = restriction of internal improvements to the “ inland sas” ofthe Miaslasippi valley. hey wanta clean ticket, wad they expect to gut it. They are afraid to try the ‘Tyler game over again. ‘That's a vort of seasoning that may again spoil the puddifig, They expect that this Taylor “tare up” will die out like » buraing brusb-heap before the campaign comes on, that the glory of the Mex Joan vietories will become stalv before thy assembling of the nominating convention, and that then the publ! mind will be ready and ripe for John McLoan and Wil- lie P. Manguim, in all of which calculations, we opine, there 1s a fundamental mistak To the extent of our observation, thy public opinion appears to be that if old Buona Vista runs, however nominated, or whatover his principles, he must run in, and that by acclamation. And ourown opinion is, that the really sagaoious men of both parties opposed to Gen. ‘Taylor for the Presidency, are casting about them for rubable accidents or contingencles which may prevent is running wt all, rather than for expedients by which ho may be resisted should he take the fleld—for if he does run, even Messrs, Gales and Ritchie see and virtually acknowledge, that resistance to his election would be perfectly absurd. You will see, therefore, that involved in this war with Mexico, we have not only all the perploxities to an im- mediate peace, but that in the event of a speedy peace, we shall Inevitably have a revolution at home, ¥ ich, in the running of Gen. Taylor upon a mixed schedule, will break up the present organization of both parties, the of which is mixed up with the darkness, aud’ the fearful shadows that, half obscured, flit about in the darkness that overhangs the future, Under this overshadowing cloud, as in a dream, we nee, (with the slave question as the dividing question.) line drawn along the Potomac and the Ohio; held in military ccoupation on. both sides, ana we hear the morning reveille and the evening drum all along that line; and nere the darkness thickens, und all sights and sounds are lost in the dense gloom, aave fitful flashos and confused voices, and a clatter of arms. But there is a brighter phase to the picture, It is in That spirit of sectional compromises which the resola- tious of Mr. Celboun, the personal assaults of Mr. Ben- ton, and the mutual’ cry of the slaveholders of South Carolina, and the abolitionists of Massachusetts, for disunion, would forever set asi wo see that, to run General. Tay! very nor fer the extinction of slavery; he must neither go for establishing slavery in Oregonjnor for the annexa- ave territory on the one hand, nor lition of slavery in the district of Columbia, He must neither adopt the ultra resolu- ns ot Mr. Calhoun, nor the ultra absurdities of ‘Thos, ‘win, dle must stand for the compromises of the atitation as they ai are interpreted either by Mussuc setts 0 ity adopt the dan- of Mr. Corwin, it not to be believe » sake of argument; but if he should adopt bec Poke emalties of So traism, and run 15} bul 40s. bbl, have rendered the market quite nominal, though the bakera aro but moderately supplied, they show do ee to buy, even at reduced pri however, present rates to be maintained unless there should be en unex- South, which is not several cargoes of wheat and flour were looked for from Valparaiso, and one cargo is At tho Cape of Good Hopw there had been large arrivels of wheat from Australia, which will Latest dates from Rio Grande 17th Stock of flour 5,000 bbls Richmond, held at 25)| in Exchange on this 8 per ceat premium. L. Moore. I found the old jentle- man in astate of mental excitement, most shocking to old. had been to see the girl who was detained vy Moore, and found her not to be his daughter nor to resemble her in the slightest particular, either in form, feature, age, or dress, as described in his advertisement, He had hastened on in the confident expectation of finding his lost child, and was doomed to the sad disappointment of having his Lopes crushed. He had also left his family and the mother of the misguided child in @ state of excitement that ewnnot be described, and he feared the disappoint- ment would be more than she could bear. J never saw more heart-rending object than this fond father present- ed as be lefc the city last evening. He seemed to be almost crushed with the weight of his affliction, his ap- pearance drawing a ourse from tho heart of every be- holder on the head of the heartless destroyer of his Gaughter ‘There is some mystery connected with the matter of sending on this dispatch, which our police will endeavor toferret out. It has excited suspicigns of the most se- rious character with regard to the conduct of Mr. Moore, and he will find it necessary to make a public explanation of his conduct in the matter. He is, I learn, a respecta- ble young man, a clerk in @ wholesale establishment in this city, We continue to have occasional showers of rain, and the weather is most delightful. The prospects of good erops are brightening in every section of the State, whilst {learn that in the neighboring counties of Penn- sylvanin.the crops promise to,exceed any that have been gathered for twenty years. Purapecenta, June 14, 1847, Notwithstanding the large number of men who have volunteered for the war from this city, the recruits are still numerous. In the upper part of the county, a eavaly company and ono of infantry, to be called the Ringgold Guards, are now forming, while the eneampment of the ‘West Jersey Guards, at Camden, is attracting thither our young men, anxious for the opportunity of dis- tinguishing themselves, In addition, Capt. Dan Drake Henrie, who has been accepted into the service by the resident, has come among us to reeruit @ few voluateors to fill the ranks of hia company, now neatly complete, ‘This gallant gentleman dis: tinguished himself during the ‘Texas revoluti: and was one of those who endured a ten months’ im- prisonment in the Castle of Perote. He was also with outing party at the time Majors Borland and were captured, and only escaped into the Ame- rican lines after a chase ot three days, and running the | gauntlet of about three thousand Mexicans. His known darng and military abilities render him the very kind of a man for a leader ‘The Sons of Temperance from the neighboring Stater are pouring into the city, intending to partielpate ia ‘he procession of to-morrow. The line will probably | contain 90,000 men. The banners pre for the oe- casion are of the most magathoent aaeripe tion.
