Against this, however, are to be set two old debts, amounting, in round numbers, to $9,600, and reducing the real profits to $18,000, Adding the estimated pro- fits to lst July next, say $4,000, the net income for the year ending that day will be $22,000. From this smount a dividend, at the rate of 7 per cent. per annum, $14,000 ia to be paid, leaving a real reserve fund of $8,000 in round numbers. The capital of this institution is now $400,000. A large increase ot business, to both the town and the bank, will, it is expooted, attend the opening of the Branch Railroad to Camden. The annexed comparative report of the tolls received on the Morris Canal, from the epening of navigation to the Ist of June, 1846 and ’47, exhibits a much more fa- vorable result than has been generally anticipated : Canat—Recriets or Tours. ived from openiny Mo: Total amount of tolls reoei opening of navigation to 31st of May, 1847....... .$12,359 41 From opening of navigation’ to the Sist of May, 1846......... ‘Total increase in favor of 1847........ Tal for the wok ending May 81 1848, Increase, week ending May 31, 1847........ $1,144 96 ‘These tolls are derived from the same boats that were on the canal in 1846. Arrangements have been made by the company to have, by the 10th of August, double the present force of boats on the canal. ‘This work is in the hands of the right kind of men, and wo have considerable confidence in their ability to make the canal a very valuable property and a very pro- fitable investment. It has an inexhaustible supply of coal at one end, and an immense market at the other, and there is no reason why this canal should not doa tremendous business. It is our impression, that in the course of a year or two the transportation of merchan- dise through this caual will only be limited by the faci- lities of the line Sau of the cad 1053 har 5 aaa $5000 Treas Notes to 105; 6s $7 10000 ef 10032 100 530 57 20000 b6045° lov 57 2000 do 250 Stonington 57) 20000 Penn ablods 78% 100 aw 571 =f. «ee TB lo a 750 Ohio 6s, "60 102 0 2 b36 59° 10000 do’ 750 Wo 1m do 236 $044 4 10000 INlinois Spl a Nor Wor aoe 2000 Reading Mtg Bds 7! The recent detection of the fraudulent adulteration of imported English Linseed Oil has caused considerable conversation among business men. We were shown two invoices to-day, by an importer—the one was for ubout 48 pipes, and the other for 12. ‘The former lot, on inspection, proved to be all adulterated. Tar Oil, or a kind of empyreumatic Oil, the présence of which can be readily detected by the smell and taste, totally changes its character, and renders it worthless. He was to enter the capital on the 19th. In a letter published in the papers, he states he had been industriously organizing guerilla parties. He had issued manifesto to the nation, but no copy of it has been received in this country. It was to be published on the 20th. An account of his operations in the East was published on the 15th. In this, he boasts largely of what he has done ; but does not say much of the future. The Mexican government was thinking of some mea- sures toreleage the American prisoners in the capital. El Republicano was again trying to excite the fears of the people, of the designs of the monarchicul party. It Says, seuret agents are at work to change the form of government . The citizens of the capital secim to be careless about the fortifications of the capital. ‘The papers are appeal- ing to them to turn out, and provide defences for it. The departure of Gen. Valencia from the capital, at the head of five thousand of the Natioual Guards, to unite his forces with Santa Anna’s troops, was daily expected; but had not taken place at last accounts. Senors Gutierrer and Cyaste, have resigned the Port | Folios of War and Justice ; the former is suceceded by General Alcosta, the latter by D. Luis de la Rosa. . Senor Daranda remains Minister of Foreign Affairs. Our Pacific squadron, says the Picayune, is busy upon the western ports of Mexico. On the 28th of April a squadron of six or eight ves- sels was off Mazatlan, and a thousand men were to dis- embark and take the town. Letters from Mazatlan say they were making every preparation for the defence of that place; but if the de- cent is made in an great force as is represented, they can make no defence of much account. Other accounts say that the port of San Blas, too, was menaced by our squadron, and that it was the purpose of the Americans to land and take the town. The vomito had made its appearance in Vera Crus, but as yet, in few casos, Vera Cruz has already nearly recovered from the ef- fects of the siege. The people were returning; the knocked down houses are being rebuilt; the streets cleaned, shops opened, and all the activity of a sea port is beginning to be displayed. Later intelligence from General Taylor has been received. Advices have been received at New Orleans from the Brazos to 25th ult. A letter to the Delta, from Monterey, May 15th, states that General Taylor was actively preparing for » move, and would probably start for San Luis about Ist June, where another grand battle was expected, which would probable be the final struggle. A most deplorable duel occurred at China on May 2lat, between two Virginian lieutenants, one named Mahan. They fought with muskets loaded with huck-shot, and both parties were killed. bched THE MAIL = Afiairs in 1 Washington. Tne President's Journey to North Carolina. Wasuixoron, Saturday Evening, June 5, 1847. Our last last general letter of the social visit of the President and his company to the old North State, brought up the record to the arrival, outward bound, of the deputation, at Raleigh. We propose to resume at that point the thread of our running memoranda; and in three successive daily epistles, to bring down the his- tory of the trip to the return of the President and the majority of his company in Washington, this after- noon. We expect to gratify the intelligent and wide- spread constituency of the New Fork Herald, in thus elaborating upon the points and incidents of this oxpe- | dition, or our corporeal exhaustion, after the hard chase that we have had of it, would induce us tosum up the narrative into a single paragraph. To resume, then, | from the point indicated, it will be our first office to give an inkling of the UPWARD JOURNEY To CHAPEL HILL, “ In beato, omnia beat for. At 8 A.M., Monday, May 31, the President and com: pany, from Washington, together with the Raleigh com- mittee, and the committees from the University, set out from borough’s hotel, im a qo ‘and om. for Chapel Hill, the rear nibui ing brought up by their baggag gous, drawn by mules, after the fashion | of Ola Zachat ism ents up the Rio Grande. ‘The procession waa headed by Siguor George's splen- | dia brass band, which accompanied us all the wa; m1 Richmond, by contract with the University. Distance from Kaleigh to Chapel Hill some 28 miles, At Morine’s (eight miles ffom the hill) ahouse of public entertainment on the way side, we turned out to a good substantial dinner. Here a spontaneous ga- thering of the people, from the hilly country roundabout, ocoupled the Presiden / Seeretary Of the Navy a half hour before the meal, in exchavging salutations.
